Brussels Airline
Don't think anything has been confirmed, but it is most likely that they will move to Terminal 1, as the plan it seems is to just keep FlyBE and Rynanair in Terminal 2.
Although i may be wrong, time will tell.....

Taxiway work
A question out of curiosity regarding the apron work at BHX.... I tried searching, but couldn't find the answer:
Is it a requirement now for taxiways to have a tarmac surface? If so, how long do airports have to comply?
I realise tarmac has better adhesion qualities than concrete in the wet, but have not heard of a requirement for it.
Thanks.

Taxiway Work
Not sure about the pros and cons of concrete v asphalt on taxiways regarding surface benefits, however if a concrete taxiway is in need of repair and the plan is to replace with with new concrete then it will need to be closed for at least a couple of weeks so the newly poured concrete has the required curing period. In the case of asphalt it can be laid, for example, overnight and trafficked next morning. I think asphalt is a lot more expensive than the concrete method, however if it is an operationally essential taxiway then asphalt may be the best option.

Sorry to take this thread off at a tangent for a moment.
Can anybody help me identify an aircraft please?
For the last 3 days (Sunday, yesterday and today) there has been a propeller aircraft circling over I would say the Wednesbury/West Bromwich area, I reckon around 6-9 mile NW of EGBB. To hazard a guess (and I'm no expert) it appears to be around the FL100 region, though I can't be sure.
It's actually circling right now. Anyone have any idea of it's type and reason for the circling?
Just curious, nothing better to do than laze around in the sun watching the planes go by.
Thanks in advance for the replies
Cheers

Ryanair
Winter 2008/9
Just noticed that Dublin is now four times daily every day rather than
just Friday - Sunday. All times are Dublin based aircraft at the moment.
A week to go to the base and what chances of more routes to be announced next Tuesday?

Passing of Sir Bob Taylor
Hopefully the mods will excuse me on this one and I could not find
a mention elsewhere after doing a search. He always came across
as a BHX man through and through and I thought a mention on the Birmingham thread is appropriate.
Reported on the airport website: -
"Airport is Saddened by Death of Sir Robert Taylor
Birmingham International Airport is sorry to hear the sad news that former Airport Managing Director, Sir Robert Taylor (Bob), passed away peacefully on Saturday 7th June 2008.
Bob joined the Airport in 1974 and led the seamless transfer of the new terminal from Elmdon in 1984, to the site we see today. In 1991 he saw through the opening of the Eurohub and retired from the Airport in 1994 when more than 5 million passengers were using the facility; placing it well and truly on the world airport map."
End of quote
Always had a word or two for me when I worked at BHX despite my lowly position.

Sir Bob
Bob Taylor was the last of the gentleman managers at BHX, always had a word with the staff whether Airport staff or not, used to take a tour around the ramp in his Jag before work stopping and chatting to staff along the way.
I had the pleasure of meeting his wife as well at his house (dropping off drink for a Xmas party, Not invited) and she also was a lovely lady.
His loss is a sad blow.

I knew and worked with Bob . I have met him since his retirement and he always remembered names and was a real Gentleman.
He always had time for his staff no matter what work they did.
He and his type will be sorely missed....
Respect and condolences to his family.

May pax - another record.
taken from the bhx website
part quote
"Birmingham International Airport handled 877,232 passengers during May including 625,770 scheduled passengers and 251,462 charter passengers spread across the two passenger terminals; surpassing the previous highest figure recorded for the month of May and a 5.7% increase over the previous year.
It is the fourth straight month of record-breaking figures at Birmingham, with February, March and April also seeing the Airport handling monthly bests."
End of quote
I thought 870000 would be the max this month but it beat this figure and
some good individual route stats as well per the full press release.
However CAA provisional stats due out tomorrow which will give the full picture.
June should be no different with the arrival of a certain airline with their first based aircraft.

The aircraft in question would be 1 of the 2 RAF BN2s based at Northholt which have been operating on and of for the last year or so. They are used to moniter people who are seen as a theat to the UK
There is a web site all about them but cant think of the address at the moment can only remember it has something about defender in it

http://www.airtransportnews.aero/art...ateg=&id=11833
Wondering if Ryanair will let slip anymore plans for the base and when more aircraft will be based???
Also is there anymore news from BHX,
->Are BmiBaby looking to add anymore routes this winter???
Ryanair and Birmingham International Airport will be celebrating the launch of its 25th base on June 17 in Terminal 2 at Birmingham where Ryanair have recently relocated. Everybody at the airport that day will be able to take part in the fun and festivities!

XL base in Summer 2009
Just checking the XL Airways website to book a flight for next summer. It would appear that BHX will have an XL aircraft based for the whole week for the whole summer schedule. It was thought that BHX would loose its XL chartered flights with the withdrawal of the based Air Malta A320. Good news for BHX it would appear that the charter flight period of decline at BHX may have slowed.
Schedule as follows;
Mon CFU/DLM
Tue HER/SSH
Wed RHO/PFO
Thu ACE
Fri JSI/HER
Sat PMI/KGS
Sun ZTH/EFL
Daza

IT Flights May 2008
On the same sort theme as Daza, the May IT pax I believe showed just
a drop of a few thousand compared to 2007.
Considering one TOM 762 has been downgraded to a 757 and TCK/MYT
have three aircraft compared to four last year it is quite a good performance overall.
Although Greek destinations are shrinking it has been helped by the increase in Egyptian flights.
There were increases in IT pax on Mahon, Ibiza, Reus, Palma and
Malaga as well as Corfu, Kos, Zante & Heraklion.
Big losses were few and far between but Rhodes and Alicante were the leading two from memory.
