Demise of Globespan
So with flyglobespan changing the schedules, no Alicante flights after 16 November, Malaga once a week and Tenerife once a week on 'w' patterns, is the base closed from the end of October? Is that the end for good for GSM at MME?
Cool intuition by Ginga eh?
never mind globespan..
Does anyone have any contacts at FRA? I know we had a visit a little while ago..reason i ask is that according to my RAF chappie friend, their are strong rumours that FRA might me moving into Leeming? Apparently costs(obvious) and space as Tornados have gone being the main reason?
Plus of course a lot of the work they do is connected with the hawks>
Any ideas?

Bye bye GSM
Well the long awaited departure of GSM means another set back for MME but I honestly feel this was something way out of MME's control.
Unfortunately, the economic crisis and GSM ageing fleet meant MME got the squeeze but I feel it was not due to poor loads and yields unlike WW. The routes were well chosen by GSM and it remains to be seen if we get a replacement in the short to medium term.
My bet is that we won't get a knight in shining armour in the same manner as when WW left but airlines will wait until the spring and the economy improves before either FlyBE or Jet2 (possibly move a B737 from NCL) move in offering a 1 aircraft base next summer.
On a positive note, I see bmi have uploaded flights to LHR up to next summer at least!!

So GSM are definitely not returning for the summer? Assuming they're not, neither Flybe or Jet2 won't even consider serving us as long as they have interests up the road. Nope, I think we're well and truly on the scrap heap now.
Also, the press and the public seem to be getting wise to the spin now, based on the tone of some of the more recent articles in the papers, and what people have been saying to me about the place!

Looks as theres a chance Flyglobespan might stay at MME. There sale of there 737-600's has fallen through and are both still British registered to Flyglobespan, the reason theres a good chance for MME is they haven't planned a S09 schedule to include them thinking they would be going onto Korea.
There has been no decision made by GSM about there 733's but now there are spare a/c, it could even be GSM decide on W pattern from GLA & EDI.

Anyone know the reason behind Eastern using Saab's on all flights today on the Aberdeen route? The Haugesund was a J41 though. Are they terribly short of J41 crew or are the loads too big now?

Other than on this thread I haven't heard anything about a base at Leeming for FR. It would however seem like a good idea for them if they did.
They already use a number of ex military bases, and they normaly work out well.
All they would need at leeming is a modest sized terminal building and lots of cheap car parking spaces. It's situated on the side of the A1 so access from all over the north east is fairly easy. Probably about one hours drive for most folk. They could pull pax from LBA,NCL & MME. Just their style!
It could also be a rumour started by FR, in order to get the best deal they can from one of the three others.

FRA are Flight Refuelling which is part of the Cobham Group. This is not Ryanair!
The problems at Leeming is that it is being scaled down. This means a lack of Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting and then prob ATC.
The crews at FRA at not wanting to travel further to get to work either.

Actually it is more likely that the remaining air assets at Leeming would move across to MME. I know there has been talk of just this as well. Some of the work carried out by the hawks at Leeming could be transfered to FRA and the grobs could easily be moved across.

FR a possible replacement for GSM?
Now switching over to FR as in Ryanair, do people not think this is now or never for Ryanair to open a base at MME and replace most if not all of GSM's routes?
Even a partial base with aircraft operating from other bases could be a good idea and less of a risk for FR. They also seem one of the few airlines who are making a profit and not scaling back (albeit with a fleet reduction at STN but more of a protest at BAA than anything else).
MME would be insane if they did not start kocking at MOL's door as soon as GSM confirm they won't be staying. On that note, even without the sale of the B7376, its no way to run a base doing such a huge potential u-turn.
What of the following routes do FR already serve?
Malaga
Tenerife
Lanzarote
Faro
Menorca
Palma de Mallorca
Stansted (when bmi pull LHR?)

I would agree. If MME management want to make something of their airport, they should be offering ryanair a good deal to come and set up a base. I don't think you will see any FR airplnes parked up this winter, they are short of airframes just now because of the strike at boeing.
With regards to the question on destinations, FR serve all but Menorca.
