To say nothing of the fight for somewhere to sit in the departure lounge, and the queue for coffee in the mornings is horrendous.

Sure beats LGW South scrum though, so usually gets my custom when leaving town.

Do Menzies handle anyone at London City anymore? I ask because last summer they handled ScotAirways who are now handled by Air France and VLM who are of course now KLM.

Yep, we still handle VLM and Scot Airways charters.

If the VLM/CityJet deal gets approved and once it kicks in then I expect the AMS schedule to be covered by a RJ85/146 rather than a F50. Perhaps they could use some of the spare capacity at LCY for new routes?

London City

Just wondering why London City isn't used more often. I'm sure there's a few main reasons, costs, size of runway etc.. but if anyone could let me know I'd appreciate it. Is there a cap on the number of movements?
Also, does anyone happen to know the costs involved of flying in and out of there (something like a king air or vlj)?

Cheers guys,
B Bear

More often than what? It's used pretty intensively by the airlines operating there! The airport is essentially full. There is a very limited number of ad hoc slots available for bizjet movements.

Charges can be found here.

Current planning application to raise movement cap is here (though they don't have room for the extra movements at present).

Lcy-nyc

BA's OpenSkies subsidary have announced they will fly from LCY to New York, from 2009. Not a great deal of information but a mention of it can be found on Bloomberg.

Am I right in saying that the A319 is the largest aircraft to get into LCY?

There is part of a BA statement on this here, apparently it is mentioned in their Q3 financial report :

BA Q3 Results

It would be an A318, not an A319. The A319 cannot get into London City. I think we are all surprised the A318 can get to JFK from there.

Nothing on the LCY website about it. Do you think they know yet ?

It would be impossible to operate an A318 from LCY to JFK. MTOM limitations result in about a 5 hour radius from at a maximum with favourable headwind components

BA Press Release this morning

British Airways is to launch double daily business class-only flights from London City airport to New York next year.

The new flights will operate on Airbus A318 aircraft with 32 seats onboard.

Willie Walsh, British Airways’ chief executive, said: “This niche service will fly passengers between the heart of the two largest financial centres in the world. London City airport is located minutes away from some of our key corporate customers and is in one of the fastest growing areas of the capital.

“We will offer a 15 minute check-in for customers in both London and New York. London City’s size means that it is a quick and easy airport to use and, with a maximum of 32 passengers onboard, getting on and off the aircraft will be a smooth process. Once onboard, customers will experience all the benefits of our business class cabin including a fully flat bed.

“The London - New York route is a key market for us and these flights will be in addition to our current Heathrow schedule from where we fly eight times a day to JFK and three times a day to Newark. As well as the business market, we are confident that there will also be a demand from premium leisure customers for this service.

“The A318 is the perfect aircraft for these flights. It is capable of operating at London City and is large enough for us to provide the number of business class seats required to make this a viable operation.”

The airline has ordered two A318 aircraft to operate these flights. They will be the first A318s in the British Airways fleet though the airline already operates 69 Airbus A320 family shorthaul aircraft.

Hey boys don't take the P*** that much, its a bit of innovative thinking. Only 32 pax so low pax weight, therefore lots of fuel, & latest fuel efficient engines. If you work in Canary Wharf and heading to NY for a days business would you rather put down in shannon for half an hour or spend 90 minutes getting from City to LHR zoo with longer check in etc. Credit where its due well done BA
