If it ceases to be an airfield, it'll presumably become a gravel pit and then a landfill before it becomes houses. Do the NIMBYs prefer that?
Also, the request for extra due diligence doesn't sit well with the meeting mentioned above which took place last night. Wasn't there a users' meeting this morning?

Pope to visit Coventry Airport.
Well it seems i was right the pope is going to have a open air mass to 250,000 people on the airfield. On the 19th September.
This must mean the airfield would have to be closed for a period up to the day to get all the stands/Stage/Tents Etc in place and then closed for a period after the event.
Will Coventry Ever Re open? And the above has just been released by the Media. Cov CC must have known about the date and venue for a while. Do they want the airport to re open.
Or maybe they can make more £££ in that one day than a whole years operations......

As far as I recall the airfield was closed for three or four days. The Pope and his entourage arrived in two S61Ns of British Caledonian Helicopters.
The Papal visit has been under discussion for some weeks and one has to presume that it has been known by the prospective new owner who has presumably already calculated the payment he and the airport tenants will require in compensation.
The question I keep asking is whether anybody doing the organising has noticed that the airfield is half the size it was in 1982, with many extra buildings (Fire Station eastwards) and ILS and DME aerials that were not there before.
I think the airfield is about 180 acres. Ignoring buildings and other no go areas, if 250,000 people turn up that gives them about 3.5 square yards each although the Pope will probably get a bit more than that....

...........exactly where Peter Rigby will have the new entrance to the airport. Maybe he could get the Pope to cut a ribbon and officially open it or something.
Looks like the Oak will be busy that day. I might just have a weeks holiday.

On the "Re-open Coventry Airport" Facebook page Warwickshire County Councillor Alan Akeister has posted about the meeting Sir Peter had with the Airport tenants last Thursday. In that he says the deal should be signed today (Monday).
Another source suggests there are just a few i's to dot and t's to cross.
It has been a long time, but perhaps not much longer now...

The Thursday meeting (with the tenants) will be the one mentioned at the top of this page. There was another with the users on Friday morning. I didn't attend either but have spoken to people who did. What I've been hearing seems to be similar to the non-Pope stuff above. Just didn't know how iminent an announcement would be. Hopefully the i's and t's are not showstoppers and have been duly dotted and crossed.

I think the chance of the Airport reopening are getting a lot better. There is still a chance that a deal cannot be done due to someone wanting too much money. It is also certin that the airport will make a loss for a few years and the new buyer seems Ok with that (unlike the swiss). the main thing is to keep it real and avoid stipid expansion plans that eat money but could never be viable so close to BHX.
I have often been very negaive about Coventry's chances as it seems to be run by idots. I do think the airport may get a proper fresh start this time.

Still a bit nervous about the ATC side. Marshalls were on a big contract and will no doubt have lost money having to pay all those high earning Controllers for the past few months. Will they really be willing to cut their cloth accordingly. As I've asked before I wonder what the fate of the radar is, looks like a creaky old thing and new ones are bloody expenisve (£5M +).

All the staff were fully redundant the beginning of March as far as im aware. If Marshall's come back they would have to hire the staff back at great cost having just paid out massive redundancy payments. If they do come back i should think it would only be for a short period of time as Sir P will probably need a leg up in the running of the airport as i suspect he has little to no experience of how an airport/ATC runs even if he has a helicopter buisness. Once he's up and running and he can get the various licenses signed over to him i should think he will be looking for Marshall's to leave. Just speculation of course!

Where's Cov Man when we need him?
Item in the Coventry Telegraph today says that if Sir Peter signs a contract, CVT could reopen as an unlicenced airfield but regain a full licence in May.
He apparently sees the potential as a general aviation hub for 'cargo, helicopters, light aircraft and business jets' as expected.
It's looking pretty positive now.

It looked positive before, especially as a larger firm with more money was about to sign a deal
Fingers crossed it goes ahead but i suspect alot of people have given up on it simply due to how long it has taken.

Looks like i might have jumped the gun on an imminenet announcement. I understand the sticking point is marshalls ATC contract, and Sir P will not do any deal until thats in place.

Im sure if serco could be involved they would be. I would suspect with the sudden closure of coventry that Marshall were left holding a few strings, not to mention all the ATC infrastructure they would have put in. Sounds like Sir P needs them to get it running again and they arn't all too keen due to the massive loss they have taken and will take in going back in.
