If they have the habit of redirecting money then surely it doesn't really matter what announcements they make.
I don't see how they could ever make a success of it as a passenger airport. Remembering that passenger numbers are not an indication of success. There are a lot of Ryan air airports world wide that would make testament to that.
Pax numbers are only likely to have an effect if you have other methods of recouping the discounts you have had to give to airlines for taking a chance on your airfield.
Any airline that even considers CVT will know it's a buyers market and will probably want to use it for no cost. If that happens where will CVT recoup that?? No Terminal. Limited car parking, I really don't see how they would survive the extra costs.
I still think this all smells a bit bad.....I'm still of a mind that the owners would like the Council to change the lease terms to enable conversion of the land into something they know a little about...
For the sake of the few still employed there I hope I'm wrong.

As soon as they are forced to give up on expasion they are likely to call in administrators. They are only able to say they are a going conern due to them claiming that they have a chance of getting planning permission to expand. The big question is if the airport can find a new buyer and scale back to a profitable core.

Nothing has been heard yet to say whether the courts are going to let the appeal continue.
Who (Especially in today's economic climate) would want to buy it as an airport? The Council certainly could not afford to run it.
I suppose there could be the slimmest of hopes that they could decide to build the 1 million capacity terminal and attract an airline that would be happy with that. Trouble is it would take them years to recoup the build spend and everything they have thrown at the legal process.
Does anyone know what the Council have actually taken from the airport (If anything) since the sale to Thomson?
Maybe, as we have said before, it has a chance as a specialist GA and Cargo field. It's location for that sort of traffic is ideal.
I haven't seen any quotes from Parcelforce about the situation. They must have some views. Are they the biggest employer on the airport?

The Council take a ground rent which I believe is around £400,000 annually. They sold the lease to Air Atlantique originally for a nominal sum and had, I believe, some agreement to share future profits. This has not come into play!

Parcelforce are not on the (current) airport. Their place was built on former airport land but all they have done is betrayed the airport by withdrawing all of their flights. They have no say in the present airport.

West Midlands International Airport Ltd would (probably) go into administration if Howard Holdings withdrew support but that would mean the group writing of a total investment of over £30Million. Even for a group the size of Howard Holdings, that would be a big hit.

Also the airport are trying a new con with the news that it has new Head of Business Development:-

Press Release

28 July 2008

Coventry Airport to offer aircraft parking

Coventry Airport is now able to offer aircraft parking for long and short term periods to airlines wishing to ease the strain as fuel costs soar.

Many airlines are reviewing their routes and then choosing to ground aircraft in order to save on high fuel costs rather than continue flying with a full fleet.

Tom Freeman, Head of Business Development said “Coventry Airport has ample space to accommodate multiple aircraft parking and is currently offering very competitive rates. We can handle most types of jet up to A320/B737 size.”New Head of Business Development Appointed

14th November 2008

Coventry Airport is open for business

Coventry Airport has appointed a Head of Business Development to grow its future airline and business strategy.

Tom Freeman has joined from Atlantic Airlines, bringing with him a wealth of experience in cargo and business aviation. His brief is to exploit the many opportunities that the airport has to offer and ensure the aviation industry is fully aware of the Midland airport’s potential.

To even things out a tad, following Befree’s apparent jubilation in seeing the demise of what is happening at Coventry, a sentiment that is I am sure hardly shared by those now out of a job just a few weeks before Christmas.

From 04 July 2008:

Midlands' Premier Airport Appoints New Chief Executive Officer</SPAN>

Paul Kehoe has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham International Airport.
Paul Kehoe was previously Managing Director at London Luton and Belfast International Airports during his eight years with the Airport Group, TBI. He is currently Chief Executive at Bristol Airport.
Commenting on his appointment, Paul Kehoe said:
“This is a tremendously exciting time to lead the team at Birmingham Airport.
“The developments that are either planned or under way are ambitious and will enable the Airport to continue to make a significant contribution to the success of the region”.
John Hudson, Chairman of Birmingham International Airport commented:
“We are delighted to have attracted Paul to Birmingham Airport following a very competitive selection process. He brings with him a wealth of airport operating experience and the board looks forward to Paul’s leadership during the challenging times ahead”.

The article is continued on to a second page, detailing a resume of Mr Kehoe’s professional and personal life.

From 27 October 2008:

Birmingham International Airport Welcomes New Chief Executive Officer</SPAN>

Birmingham International Airport is delighted to announce that its new Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe, has joined today.
Paul brings with him a wealth of experience in the aviation industry, having worked in it for some 25 years. His previous experience encompasses military air traffic control, British Aerospace, Serco Aviation and his most recent roles at Bristol and Luton Airports.
Paul Kehoe, commenting on his new role, said: “I am looking forward to working alongside the Board, Management Team, Staff and Stakeholders here at Birmingham.
“I have joined the Airport at a very exciting time, with the new International Pier under construction, an extension to the Multi Storey Car Park under way, and the recent opening of two new hotels. Added to that the fantastic news that US Airways will be joining us next year, and you can see why I am so enthusiastic to lead the Airport which not only puts Birmingham on the map as the second City, but also links the Midlands with the rest of the World - showing that it means business.
“My goal and passion is to drive the business forward with the support of my team to uphold our mission to be the Best Regional Airport in Europe.”
</SPAN>

Again, the article is continued on to a second page.

He is new in post this year so apart from issuing the news twice a practice most groups and particularly the government ( where two would be a low number) engage in, where is the con?

I don't think anyone is happy about people losing their jobs. Discussing the failures of the management team at CVT is hardly that.

The job losses at Coventry are down to the directors with grand plans that could never work but would provide profit for their other firms. If TUI still owned the airport then they would be fighting hard to keep it going as otherwise the lease is worthless.

A fond farewell

... and as the last bits of my Coventry business are packed into a van and shipped to the dump I say a HUGE thank you to my staff for all of their hard work and dedication over the last 4 years. Any TFLy crew looking in, thanks for your business with us and, indeed, any pax looking here - thanks to you too.

Just before the coffee machines we collected by the scrap man I took a reading from each and discovered that we had sold nearly 1 millions cups!

Hope you enjoyed them.

And now we are ... gone.

Flight Support Coventry into administration this morning, which leaves all the freight operators a bit in the crap, but not as much as the staff who were told on their payday that they weren't getting paid and out of a job.

All the best to them all in the future
