It's quite a few years ago now, but I had some good years flying for them. Best wishes to you who have been let go.

Avman,
Read the post again direct quotes from two different sources the first from Radio the Second from an Irish Newspaper indicating a slightly different story nothing to do with my prowess with numbers.
Please allow brain to digest information before engaging mouth or in this case fingers

"Thoughts with all those at..."

I would like to know when people say such things, see title, if they really mean it or are actually thinking, "thank f*!k it's not my airline!"

All sounds a bit hollow to me!

God, PPRUNE has reached new depths. A well intentioned poster gets shot down for expressing sympathy for pilots being made redundant.......

Bladepilot, thanks - your initial post was appreciated

goaroundnow, on completion of your Go-Around please continue into orbit.....no rush back

Aer Arann have had quite a number of sales over the past 2 months, lead me to believe things were fairly rough.

Are the aircraft cuts going to come from the ATR's or will some be jets?

sad news really, are the job cuts across the board or is it mainly administration and pilots. I see the amount of planes is also to be reduced. information seems to be a bit vague so far.

I don't believe I was being unsympathetic. I just cannot believe that "thoughts" really are with these people and not with oneself in this climate. Of course, I do not wish to see pilots being laid off etc. I also fail to believe others "easy-to-type" words are anything more than that - words.

I may continue into orbit, maybe you'll drive into a wall.

Easier to attack than to defend!!

diver69; Tks for your appreciation for my genuine concern about a group of great people I have come into contact with through my work. it is indeed sad news.
niallbhoy & StephenM_SMC; info still vague but I'm sure more will be revealed in the next week or so.

This could be interesting to watch.

For FOs Aer Arann is very much a stepping stone airline, great for building up hours and getting experience in flying around both congested airspace and the more tricky regional airfields. I believe this could be the push for a number of FOs to perhaps move on to airlines in the ME or where ever they can secure employment (post 9/11 scenario springs to my mind)!

As for the Captains, well I believe a lot of them are nearing retirement and joined Aer Arann more for the fun of the flying. So they may be secure enough to stay or perhaps just retire!

So basically what I am saying is that I am sure those who want to stay will be safe enough.

But then I could be totally wrong on both accounts! lol

So O'Leary has succeeded in his aim - to weaken, and ultimately destroy a small independent Irish airline. What a git the man is.

Its got nothing to do with O'Leary really (wont give him credit). The big airlines are also feeling the pinch but at least they got big cash reserves to bide through the tough times. Smaller airlines have to be pro-active.... Its just a shame that the pilots, cabin crew and engineers have to pay. Possible better management of the airline when it was going through the good times is believed, could have prevented this. but we will see the outcome... But the airline should still survive to piss off O'Leary another day...

Airforce1, you seem to be lacking in background info. 5Tarbuck is correct. Allow me to enlighten you.

For the past decade O'Leary has slagged off any airline which bid for Irelands PSO routes, jeering that they were 'taking tax payers money' and 'sponging off the state'. He conveniently ignored the sponging off Belgian, French and Italian tax payers he himself was doing (he even told the EU to 'fock off' when they ordered him to return the ill gotten gains).

Fast Forward to 2007, and Mr.Holier-Than-Thou suddenly applies for - and wins - the PSO route to Kerry, formerly operated by the little niche carrier Aer Aran.

Why did O'Bleary bid for the PSO routes in spite of his (pseudo) aversion to taking taxpayer bucks? Why did he bid for a route which is a marginal commuter service even for a turbo-prop?
He did it in the blatant attempt to drive Aer Aran out of business. Like a big fat smelly giants foot stamping down on a scurrying little ant.

This has been well reported in the Irish media - that the CEO of Aer Aran went to visit O'Bleary and asked him to stop trying to put him out of business. O'Bleary told him to 'eff off back to the bog' or some such endearment, and threw him out of his office.

So, yes, we're all feeling the pinch, but few have to deal with such blatant attempts at commercial assassination as Aer Aran have suffered at the hands of Ryanair.

Where is the regulator???
Why, they GAVE O'Bleary the route, the instrument of Aer Arans destruction.

Aer Arann's fleet is entirely composed of ATRs. There is one BAe146 of Nex Aviation which was flying Amsterdam/Faro/Bordeaux etc over the summer on a franchise basis, but it isn't counted in the above fleet number and anyway I believe that aircraft is no longer operating for Aer Arann in the winter. So I think it's fair to say that the aircraft cuts are coming from the ATRs.

The regulator does not assign the PSOs, it is the Department of Transport.
