Heard that Ryanair has got PSO for KIR DUB and that City Jet has NOC DUB
The loss of Kerry-Dublin will be a major blow to Aer Arann. Its currently 4 times daily. Knock-Dublin will be less of a blow since it was only once daily, but I think it had one of the highest subsidies per passenger. I wonder will Ryanair base an aircraft in Kerry to operate the Dublin flights as well as perhaps the London and Frankfurt flights?

Just checked and flights to Kerry and Knock aren't bookable after July 21st!

Ryanair - KIR-DUB PSO award!? What will that do for the Euro 0.99 fares?

The cat is well and truly among the pigeons now!

I wonder will Aer Arann simply stay on KIR-DUB regardless of FR being awarded the PSO?

Why is KIR-DUB still deemed to be a PSO anyway? You would think the route ought to be matured by now and that taxpayers' money could be better spent. Better spent like on protecting Kerry's own Ceann Comhairle from digs at horse race meetings!

Irish aviation is such a scream - you dont have to be mad but it sure does help you along the way!

Aer Arann should start ORK-BVA, ORK-CRL even if it was only x 4/7 and x 3/7. Should be no problem for the nice new ATRs.

Heard that Ryanair has got PSO for KIR DUB and that City Jet has NOC DUB
The question is will Ryanair operate a 737 on this route four times a day, or does the route only require a morning and evening flight. I'm not up to speed with the structure of how these PSO's work, but I take it only a certain percentage of the seats not filled are eligible for the subsidy.

The second question now is will Cityjet operate the NOC flight using one of their own machines or will they use one of VLM's Fokker 50's. Hard to justify using a four engine jet on a route that barely has more than 30 pax's per flight. Or am I mistaken in thinking that the subsidy's are actually a lot higher than I thought. I don't agree with subsidy's myself but to think taxpayers money is being burned away is criminal in my mind.

I did hear through the grapevine yesterday that Aer Arann were awarded the PSO LDY-DUB route, whether it's true or not I don't know.

Cityjet also have the 35 seat Dornier 328 which would be a perfect fit for the route.

PSO's

Congrats to CityJet if they have got the Dub Noc the 328 would be alot more confortable than a 42.If Arann havent got Kir it can not be CityJet either as there A/C does not meet the recuirments for this route. If Ryanair have got the Dub Kir I think its a shame, How could the Greens let this happen a route that doesnt even fill a 72 most of the time. I think this bid was but in to hurt Arann even more along with the Dub Ork route. Oh well guess the Kir pax can never be worried about an empty seat apart from the Last weekend in September of course

Cityjet on Dublin Knock

So how will the 328 get to Dublin to operate the Knock flight?

Will it go LCY/DUB/NOC and then NOC/DUB/LCY and inturn reduced capacity on DUB LCY with the arrival of BA? Or will we see a Dundee route set up ?

Does any one have any information?

> Whats a pso

Public Service Obligation route.

An EU thing. Basically, when a government sees that a region could do with an air service, but it is too thin to attract anyone commercially, they can set up a PSO. This basically means they set the spec for a route, and offer it for tender specifying a subsidy. Then the airlines apply to win the route. In ireland, they apply every 3 years.
So put simply, the government pay the airline to operate the route. But be aware, many airlines pull out, or go bust operating these, so despite the government money, you still have to work to make the route work.
I believe knock has the highest subsidy, but is also the thinest of the PSOs, and therefore, the hardest to make money on.
Also, i believe that the EU dont see this as throwing money at routes that dont work. The idea is to support them as they develop, and then they can stand on their own 2 feet. So dont expect these PSOs to last forever (this might be the last round).
Also, i think this whole notion applies to ferrys etc, not just air routes.

The irish PSOs (those funded by the irish gov) are:
Derry - Dublin --- Currently with Loganair --- To become Aer Arann
Donegal - Dublin --- Currently and to stay with Aer Arann
Sligo - Dublin --- Currently and to stay with Aer Arann
Knock - Dublin --- Currently with Aer Arann --- To become Cityjet
Galway - Dublin --- Currently and to stay with Aer Arann
Kerry - Dublin --- Currently with Aer Arann --- To become Ryanair

Will Aer Arann operate their other Kerry routes after this? I know Manchester isn't operated with the Kerr-based aircraft, but with Dublin gone and Lorient seasonal, it would be a small (and potentially unviable) presence to maintain.

As regards the future of the PSO routes, I would expect Galway-Dublin and Kerry-Dublin to lose PSO status in the near future, possibly at the end of the current deal. The others might be around for a while yet.

PSO

Whatever about Kerry I can't see a PSO surviving on Galway once the M4 is completed as it should reduce the journey time to under 2 hrs.

It is due to delayed delivery of the DH8-Q400, the ATR-72 based at Glasgow will be operating the BE1431 / BE1432 GLA-CWL-CDG-CWL-GLA, not sure if it will be operating in the afternoon.

Heard Michael Leary of Ryanair today (podcast on their website) forecasting breakeven this year but lots of European second tier airlines going bust. He gave specific mention to Jet2 & Aer Arann. Noticeable the ryanair site also publicises Ryanair's rantings against Arann's PSO subsidies and how they've reduced Arran's subsidy by E12m by stealing one of the PSO routes and more in their sights. I guess theres no love lost there then

Learey seemed to think Jet2 FlyBe and arann were all going under this winter.
Have Arann found a use for the ATR they had on lease to Euromanx in the isle of man? It was on a very juicy lease that must have been difficult to replace.
