Aer Arann- Ryanair war? Can anyone educate us Brits what's happening there on the emrald Isle? I thought Ryanair and Arran were very different businesses so didnt compete. Looking at Ryanairs comments there CEO doesnt see it the same and is after their blood. Did someone from Arran run off with Leareys missus or is it just Ryanairs desire to control all of Irish aviation including Aer Lingus

I'm not sure what the history behind it is, but certainly Ryanair have been very agressive in going after some of RE's more profitable routes. Aside from the PSO Dublin-Kerry route, we've seen Ryanair start the following, which would have had an impact on some RE yields

Cork-Dublin
Cork-Prestwick & Shannon-Edinburgh (RE have Cork-Edinburgh)
Shannon-Leeds Bradford (RE have Cork-Leeds Bradford and had Galway-Leeds Bradford)
Cork-Carcassonne (Not a direct RE competitor, but it will have taken traffic from various RE tourist oriented flights to France).

If they end up with spare capacity at either base, I wouldn't be surprised to see them go onto Cork-Belfast City as that must be one of RE's most profitable routes left where there isn't a serious runway restriction preventing FR from going on.

Ork-dub Re V Fr

Market share and load factors on ORK-DUB similar to last year. Ryanair made slight gains during the winter but RE regained lost ground again in recent months. Of course yields are the unknown factors

Try http://www.smiliner.com/news/current.shtml#0805_12

The two 146s flying for Aer Arann are G-TBIC (all white) and EI-CNQ (all white with tiny Aer Arann titles on the front fuselage).

Anyone know why there was a second NOC - DUB flights listed on flightstats for 1430 on Saturday, charter? Seems to have been a lot of chopping on the route lately with aircraft, one flight I heard was routed via CFN, that must really annoy pax who decide to fly to Dublin for speed and convenience.

Also RE haven't removed NOC from their site yet even though KIR was removed shortly after the PSO announcement, are they still discussing a wet lease with Cityjet on the route?

Neither route is available from Aer Arran after July 22. Strange about Cityjet not selling it yet though.

Well with the price of oil it would probably suit them well to leave the 35 pax in NOC and pocket the subsidy each trip

146 Operations

Does anyone know what the plans for the winter are for the 146 flights that are now operating?

Is Waterford & Galway to Amsterdam summer only? Or does anyone have any infomation as to how they are performing?

Cullen Leaves as MD

Publication: Irish Independent

Date: 16/07/08

Summary: Cullen determined to make retirement stick after taking Aer Arann bow

Full article:

PADRAIG O Ceidigh's Aer Arann is on the hunt for a new managing director after the company yesterday confirmed aviation veteran Garry Cullen will step down from his role in December.

The news comes almost exactly two years after Mr Cullen took the role in June 2006.

It will see the 64-year-old stay on six months beyond his original two-year contract.

In a statement yesterday, Aer Arann's board said they wanted to have his successor in place by October "to ensure a smooth transition, continuing the implementation of the company's successful growth and development strategy".

A one-time Aer Lingus chief executive, Mr Cullen was brought into the airline at a time of rapid expansion as owner Mr O Ceidigh took a step back to become executive chairman.

Sources yesterday stressed that there was a "lot of interest in the job" when Mr Cullen was appointed back in 2006, suggesting interest will be "just as high" this time around.

Others, however, pointed out Mr O Ceidigh's chairman role had proved "more hands on than expected", a development that might deter potential candidates.Aer Arann's current outlook is also radically different to the outlook in 2006, with $140 oil battering the regional airline along with the rest of the aviation sector.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has repeatedly speculated on the prospect of the company's collapse this winter, sentiments that could scare off potential candidates from more comfortable airlines.

Candidates

Internally, candidates are expected to include commercial director Fergal Barry and finance director Paul Schutz, who came up through the ranks as a Ryanair executive.

Mr Cullen has already flirted with retirement twice, first when he left the Aer Lingus top job in 1999 and then when he left Caribbean airline Liat in 2006.

The executive is believed to be determined to "make his third retirement stick", rather than seeking employment with another airline.

Has he? Cannot recall ranting MOL about Aer Aran in that direction. Not sure why he would have an interest in stirring up that pot. He cannot bring his 737s to places like Galway, Sligo or Donegal....

Excerpt taken from Belfast Telegraph 26 May 08

'Meanwhile, Ireland's third biggest airline, Aer Arann, said last week it may seek a financial partner and lease out more aircraft on the back of rising fuel costs and an economic slowdown.

"The most likely one to go bust at $200 a barrel is Aer Arann," said O'Leary.

A spokeswoman for Aer Arann said the airline "is in a healthy financial state, with reserves to enable us to weather any storm".
