Any idea when (if) FR want to make an announcement on an expansion of operations at Shannon?

Shannon Independent from tonight 31/12/12

As of midnight tonight (31/12/2012), SNN will be independent from the DAA group.

Good luck to all concerned at the airport - I hope they make a success of this opportunity.

It's already independent from the DAA as of today.

History being made today at Shannon. Surprised that so many staff want to stay tied to DAA apron. The last eight years under the DAA have been among the most difficult in the airports history.

At 23.59 tonight Shannon becomes independent but there is a serious amount of confusion within the new body and Shannon Development (SD) which is going to somewhat delay the the proactive function. With SD and others now coming under one roof there is no CEO appointed and certain key positions have not been filled. Having a lot of friends working in the new body they actually have no idea what they will be doing when they turn up to work on Wednesday morning.
In the lead up to Christmas there have been serious discussions regarding a new route to Frankfurt. Seemingly these discussions scuppered the possible announcement of a new summer route from Knock to Frankfurt at the beginning of November.
Hopefully the new management structure is in effect sooner rather than later and people know what roles they will have. My fear is that this time next year there will be several excuses being made as to why the airport remained stagnant with "integration" being the blame.

I wish them every success.

no CEO appointed
Latest News From Shannon Airport > Rose Hynes appointed as Chairman of Shannon Airport Authority

With the recent news about LH only keeping routes from FRA and MUC I expect that also put a spanner in the works for both SNN and NOC. Couldn't see either airport being able to support a regular A319/20 service to FRA. It will be an intresting if LH do add either airport.

So much for NOC supporting Ryanair's service to Frankfurt....

I agree with you that there is no way a 319/320 could be supported to FRA. CDG was a huge success with excellent yield and onward connecting business traffic when the EMB50 was used but the when they increased to an Avro the number of passengers remained the same thus CityJet reduced their prices to try and increase the load but to no avail. A 50 seater to Amsterdam with KLM would be my preference and cut out my weekly commute to Dublin.

Any likllihood of Ryanair expanding anytime soon?

The timing is a bit off since I dare say they won't expand straight away, they will need a few more months I dare say to negotiate with the new owners. It therefore might not be until next summer until we see any expansion from them, but although Ryanair has sort of developed and moved on from Shannon now, I would still be very surprised to see no expansion from them at all. I think 2 or 3 aircraft is reasonable to expect in the fairly near future, but probably mostly operating UK and seasonal sun routes in the Med. I would have thought that a base close to the size of Prestwick is likely.

Shn is now in a very strong position , debt free, guaranteed rent roll from Shannon Development properties worth €m,s per year, up front cash injection from DAA and transfer staff and pension liabilities. They can now secure all key access to the west from Cork to Knock as they have the cash to do deals with airlines. It's a super deal for the airport and one that Noonan,Varadkar and Bruton will be proud of. If they go about their business property they should also be able to take DAA traffic from Cork and even Dublin by offering far better value to airlines to use the airport .
Well done to all there and happy new year

Shannon

I doubt FR will close it's Prestwick base it's just after announcing 4 new routes for Summer 2013 !

It would be great if SNN got it's European hub connections back maybe Lufthansa Regional/Eurowings to Frankfurt/Munich.
Air France/Cityjet return to Paris CDG
KLM Cityhopper to AMS
Air Nostrum to MAD ???

If FR do comeback and expand what routes would they operate ? Maybe bring back Prestwick and East Midlands are just launch routes that EIR currently operate... Seems like the typical thing for FR to do. Same with the European routes (Paris, Frankurt etc) If FR launch them then there's probably NO chance we'll see any European Carriers coming to Shannon.

Would be great if EIR relaunched Bristol, Glasgow and Rennes. And if EI launched new European routes and kept it's American destinations year round.

Wish Shannon the best of luck in 2013 !

Nobody is suggesting that they will.

Close, as in "close to the size of" NOT close as in "close it down".

I'm saying that I think that Ryanair may expand at Shannon to a similar size to what they currently serve from Prestwick.

Shannon's future

Hopefully Shannon will create new business and not just target low cost traffic from Cork, Kerry and Knock.
There is still considerable doubt as to whether much thought went into this breakaway initiative. Many of the assumptions made in the business plan appear to be far fetched. Is the airport really going to attrcact wide-bodied transatlantic flights just because of its pre customs clearance facilities? Will it realistically get the likes of Air France to switch it's Cargo Service back from Dublin? Is the DAA going to stand idly buy and let its traffic in Cork and Dublin be taken by Shannon although don't be surprised if they come under political pressure to do just that.

If they succeed in financially undermining Dublin and Cork by offering zero charges to airlines that are presently paying full charges how will that benefit the tax payer who owns all three airports?

Mayfly1 and Ryan2000 it may seem like they have a lot of money now but consider 8 million being lost per year (a lot of passengers needed now to reduced it) and major cuts will need to be made or else it will run out of money after a few years. I expect that at most the new management could reduce it by a million per year which is a big ask in its self. The runway needs a complete relay which won't come cheap either. If you ask me the DAA got out just in time.

No matter how much money SNN offer airlines it will have no real affect on Dublin slightly on Cork as once the marketing support comes to an end so will the routes as the yield per passenger that is at Dublin and to an extend Cork is and will never be at SNN.

If Ryanair and SAA don't agree something then I can see EI having a summer base for sun routes as I understand that bookings for SNN-FAO are doing very well and it will be a very successful route if current trends continue.

PK rumoured to reroute JFK and ORD through SNN from the summer.

I think JFK is via MAN currently but that could move to BCN and ORD via MAN when it resumes. I think SNN will have a good chance of securing both routes.

All is gone very quiet since the seperation announcement and it was promised by Min Noonan and Rose Hynes that the recruitment for the new CEO would be by end of year...hope internal sqabbles are not taking over and causing issues.. Also no announcements either from Ryanair as ealier being mooted....hope 2013 will not be a omen for all afterall....

Given its only separated less than 3 weeks I'd give it some more time

A Ryanair announcement is really the last thing they need.
