Aer Arann effectively going up against their own route out of Galway to Edinburgh. It is hard to see both surviving and given Aer Arann's recent preferential treatment of the EIR brand over their own, there will only be one winner here.

EDI was obviously avoided in the first EIR SNN route launch to spare the REs GWY services. I wonder has there been a change of plan? With some of the PSO ATRs presumably moving to SEN base they may not have the capacity for some of the GWY routes, GWY - EDI down 39% last month. EDI also marked as not operating Jan17-Feb 14th on the RE timetable.

Good to see further Aer Lingus/Aer Arann expansion at SNN. I agree the GWY - EDI route won't be around much longer as Flybe are also starting it from Knock.

With an announcement like that and the loss of the PSO subsidies, you'd have to winder about the future of Galway Airport. If it did go, it would be good news for Shannon and Knock.

840 - its probably for the best if air travel to the west is consolidated into two airports. Sligo is already gone with the impending loss of the PSO and while RE have yet to say it publicly, they must know that time is up for Galway too. I'd guess most of GWY's passenger traffic would go to Shannon, with some to Knock and Dublin also. 180,000 pax or so divided up won't make a huge difference to any of these airports but having fewer gives the remaining airports a better opportunity to establish themselves long term.

Edinburgh announced with EI regional and increases in frequency on others.

Aer Lingus Regional's new Shannon route - RTÉ News
Musical chairs from what I can see. Glasgow is being reduced down to 3 weekly from 7 weekly (I think?) last summer, while Bristol is being reduced from 7 weekly last summer (?) to 6 weekly. Therefore the 5 weekly service to Edinburgh seems to be at the expense of 4 rotations per week to Glasgow and one to Bristol.

In further musical chairs, the Cork based aircraft that currently operates Cork-Glasgow-Shannon-Glasgow-Cork will now operate Cork-Bristol-Shannon-Bristol-Cork with Shannon to Glasgow handled by a Shannon based aircraft.

Good spot.

SNN-GLA was daily last summer and was definitely down for more than 3 weekly rotations when I looked up flights for this April on it a few weeks ago.

Nonetheless the addition of a new EIR route is to be welcomed and a daily rotation to Glasgow always seemed like overcapacity. This probably represents a better line up for the airport.

Summer 2011 (from last week):
SNN - GLA - M-WTF-S
SNN - BRS - MTWTF-S

EI have dropped the bussiest days on the GLA route which would be SM----F-.

SNN - MAN will go 2 daily except 1 daily on Saturdays.

Also a number of charter flights to Dubrovnik will operate between May - September.

Those times for GLA-SNN are terrible. Cant see that lasting. The diversion of services to EDI may be a reflection of the BE NOC service starting up.

Table: Air Passenger Movement (Number) by Irish Airport, Foreign Airport, Month and Direction

This should probably give you the best and most accurate up to date figures. These are from the Central Statistics Office in Ireland. Hope it helps. EISNN

The drop in commercial terminal movements for the three State airports between 2005 and 2010 can be analysed as follows;

Commercial terminal traffic at Dublin at 153,101 movements in 2010 is down by 9.4% on 2009 and 11.6% on 2005.
Commercial terminal traffic at Shannon airport at 18,771 movements in 2010 is down by 32.2% on 2009 and 45% on 2005.
Commercial terminal traffic at Cork at 23,626 movements in 2010 is down by 9% on 2009 and 31% on 2005.

The estimate was that SNN would handle around 1.5 million or less but traffic is expected to increase slightly this year according to airport boss.

CO will operate 11 weekly Newark - SNN flights this summer

2 flights will operate on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and daily on other days.

From What I can remember they operated 10 weekly last summer.

A spur off the Galway/Ennis Limerick line from Sixmilebridge was promised over ten years ago and then they - the government and CIE/Iarnroid Eireann - said that there was no market for it and that it wouldn't be used and so cancelled it. They - CIE/Iarnroid Eireann - also said that there was no market for a Limerick to Ennis line and after years of pushing and petitioning by the local people it's now one of their most profitable routes on their network.

Funny that, eh?
