This underlines the fact that the A330 was and still remains the wrong choice of aircraft for SNN BOS and SNN JFK. From the choice of 747's in the late 60's to the 767 debacle in the 90's to the A330's on SNN routes, EI have a history of poor judgement when it comes to the Atlantic. Is there another airline in Europe that operates widebodies on a thin transatlantic route like SNN BOS, a route that is totally dominated by peak season tourist traffic and J1 visa students.

It'd be interesting to read what the accumulated losses are on this route over the years. Surely a 757 operation would be a more viable option. It'd still be a lossmaker but it wouldn't be as daft a proposal as operating an A330 in February.

The thing is that the route is very successful during the summer months but it just totally falls on it's ass come the beginning of January. Aer Lingus are doing the right thing by pulling it for two or three months at a time during the low part of the year. From what I've heard Mr Muller himself has said that the A330 is perfect for it by all accounts but only during the busy period. You won't ever see EI operate from SNN during the low winter season again. That I'm pretty certain of. Unless they do some sort of winter wet lease of a 757 (with wingets). Think those 757's are hard to find so I think pigs will probably fly across the atlantic before EI do that.

This year they will be scheduled but tour operators will have most of the seats.
Last year they were all charters.

As far as i know the flights can only be booked as a holiday package with blaguss - www.blaguss.com. It is not possible to book flight only.

They appear to be on sale on the Niki Website although they are a bit expensive. In the region of 400 euro return. Not sure if it includes accomodation but I doubt it very much.

SNN-CDG

My Shannon source has told me poor bookings for the summer and the present performance to date have resulted in EI management suspending the Paris (CDG) route from the end of the summer season. Although i would'nt be as quite to jump to conclusions as the money months May -> Sept havent begun yet but load factor to present has been ''very poor''.

I'd have thought SNN-CDG would be pushing the range of an ATR.

I certainly wouldn't want to sit on one for that long.

It would be an ideal route if Aer Lingus ever bought the Embraers they are constantly linked with.

SNN-CDG

I think this route should be ok with the ATR72, also AMS and BRU would be in reasonable reach, but i wouldn't go further than that.

The ATR is faster than the FK50 was, but not as fast as the Q400.

The ATR would easily make CDG from Shannon. AirContractors/FedEx have a flight most nights to CDG from Shannon.

Mentioned in the Dublin thread. Probably a good thing for ORK and SNN imo. Out of the claws of the DAA. Make or break for both imo. Still dont understand how ORK lost twice as much money as SNN last year?

Hey vkid, I dont know the full explanation for this but looking back at the wranglings between Cork Airport management and DAA, the issue was that CAA wanted to have DAA shoulder the debt burden for the new terminal, and I may be wrong but I think that CAA were left to deal with their own debts and DAA weren't covering it, that may give rise to a loss.....

Though not sure!

Shannon/Gatwick

Quick copy of comments on the Aer Lingus thread. Good news for those of us that want to use EI's LGW service but have been put off by the need to get out of bed before dawn! Slightly tempered by the fact that the route goes down to 4xweekly operation (1-3-5-7).

Flights now operate in the evening in the upcoming winter timetable, dept ex LGW 17:50, dept ex SNN 19:55. A much more suitable schedule for the Shannon market.

Cork has been saddled with a debt of over €100m. That's why it's loss has been so great. I once flew Cork-CDG in a FK50, it'was'nt that bad.
