@rushedyou

The programme is for cadet pilots.
If you already have a CPL and are shortlisted for the next rounds, you will have to go undergo some parts of the training once again with the cadet pilots.
Not sure of this, but I think someone mentioned this earlier.

rushedyou 26th Mar 2011 06:53

@dragstar

Thanks for the reassuring news.

sia queries

With refernce to the SIA CADET(India) advert in Indian newspaper:
So,I guess SIA recruits CPL holders too, previous applicants(Ind/ Sin./ all SIA applicants) or someone knowledgable may correct me.

The ther area what I wanted some clarification is,how does SIA go about the whole process;
  • No. of assessment stages
  • EACH round in brief ,duration, Sim round?
  • what type are they hiring for
  • what is the applicant supposed to know?
  • for a CPL/IR holder would they conduct seperate(more detailed)assesments?
  • study materials to refer?
It would be very kind of anyone who could answer or perhaps provide some more info to the above areas. :ok:

Thanks in advance and good day to all of you,
CR

moccajava 30th Mar 2011 17:25

i'm appalled they had to extend their recruitment drive all the way to india now. have they really exhausted the talent pool from singapore and malaysia? what next, PRC? :D

Stallone 31st Mar 2011 01:49

SIA always love the Indians one what...

this isn't the first time..

Dmits 31st Mar 2011 03:55

Hi, anyone who went for interview recently care to share how it went?
Thanks.

Joseph82 31st Mar 2011 05:11

Sigh, the dilemma of being singaporean...

SummontheKraken 2nd Apr 2011 08:11

Just thought I'd help out by giving some pointers and insight with regards to the SIA cadet pilot interview as I recently got through.

As you may already know, first interviews are conducted in 2 sessions every Friday. Second interviews, 1 full-day session every Wednesday. From what I could see, every Friday, there are about ~40 first interviewees (give or take). About 7 - 8 will make it to the second interview.

The second interview is variable. There have been days when all made it through or none at all. But from what I could gather, the usual is 4 ~ 5 will make it through.

That's a whopping total of 90% attrition rate.

-----------------------------
First interview.

There will be one HR personnel and one Captain. This is where it boils down to how lucky or how good you are. Some people get interviewed by Management Pilots, and these people tend to ask really difficult questions. Some, by line Captains who are generally laid-back and want to assess your passion to fly. Be prepared and read up more.

The general rule of thumb is: If you do not know the answer, tell the truth and say you do not know. Do not try to lie your way through. If they press on for the answer, then try to answer as logically as you can. They are interested to see your thought pattern.

Questions are not fixed and I believe they are tailored to the individual's background and qualifications. If you're a Business/Arts grad, be prepared to be asked questions pertaining to the basic engineering (what are the 4 engine strokes, how does the fuel system work) or basic flight (gas turbines, Bernoulli's effect in flight).

Management pilots like to ask business based questions as they want an "all-rounder". Questions may be in the form of: "Why does SIA invest in so many different types of aircrafts?", "Why do we fly only certain routes and not others?". There are technical questions too, so be prepared.

-----------------------------
Second interview.

The prerequisite computer test by ComPsy. Most of us found it difficult and felt like we failed it after we finished. It'll take around 2.5 hours. The full details of the test is in Pg78 of this thread. Most important thing here is: Get a good night's sleep the night before the test. It is mentally draining and you need to be alert.

Break for lunch.

Interview starts with a panel of 4 Captains and 1 psychologist. Same case here, the questions are tailored for you. Nothing is fixed, but be prepared to be asked similar questions that you couldn't answer in the first interview. I believe the first interviewer recorded the questions that you couldn't answer. Do not just read up on that specific question, dive deeper. Say if you couldn't answer what are the 4 engine strokes, read up on that and go further to include the fuel system, transmission system etc etc. They want to see that you are willing to learn.

Here, they are also interested in your background. Why you did certain things and why you didn't. If there's something I learnt from the many interviews that I've gone through, don't just highlight the positive and try to make yourself shine. You need to show your humanistic side too. Do not be afraid to say: "It was a mistake on my part.. I regret not having pursued that when I was.. If I could turn back time, I would.." They want to see that you know your weaknesses, your mistakes and are willing to change that if given a chance.

As for the tea party, its a relatively informal affair at the training centre lounge. Small table with coffee, plain water, cakes and puffs. You can ask the 4 Captains about their experiences, their take on flying, their advice on certain matters. Be nice and don't try to dominate the entire conversation. Don't be too quiet either.

-----------------------------
With regards to the question of age, for Singaporeans, at 25, you may apply. But SIA will only give you the contract once they have sought clearance from the government (RSAF). At 24, you're a little too young in their eyes. If you get rejected through their silkroad system, apply again at 25. It's unfair, yes, cos the foreigners get to go through at 20, 21. But it's just the way our country's system works. Accept it and don't try to fight it.

As to "O" levels, even if you retake one paper that you didnt do well for (say you got D7 for Physics and wish to retake only Physics right now), it will not make a difference. From what the HR told us, they want to see you take all the papers in ONE sitting. This is to judge your ability to get through the 14 ATPL ground papers in 6 months. Reason being "O" levels is a better gauge is because at the University level, you can OTOT (own time, own target) pass the specific module, even if its 10x harder than "O" levels.

Turn your positive experiences and word it in such a way that it benefits SIA. If you did well in sports, say your athletic abilities stem from your constant desire to excel and it is this quality that you believe SIA needs from its pilots. If you're good academically, mention your hard-working traits and how SIA would benefit from this. In short, all your qualities should BENEFIT SIA, and not just yourself.

All the best!

Joseph82 2nd Apr 2011 16:48

Hey Kraken,
Congrats for making it! :ok: n thanks for sharing your experience.
Appreciate it!

Joe

Excellent sharing, this is definitely very useful to all of us.
Thanks, and congrats!

Hello everyone!

This cadet pilot programme has got me so excited but I can't even seem to be able to submit my application form! Since everybody has been successful in submitting their applications, I guess the problem is unique to me! Could you please help me locate where or what I might be doing wrong?

I'm using Firefox (tried applying using IE as well) and I get this error message when I hit "submit" right at the end:

Current Action Temporarily Unavailable

An unexpected problem has occurred with this action. This issue has been logged. Please try your request again. If you feel you are receiving this message in error, please contact support.
I've logged the ticket with the support, lets hope they sort it out soon. In the mean time what do you think I might be doing wrong?

superliner

Joseph82 4th Apr 2011 05:03

@ Superliner,
Perhabs you should try using another PC to apply instead of switching browsers?

convo 9th Apr 2011 12:38

doubt

Hi aLL! I receive email to attend first round Interview next friday. I got one serious question that i really want to know.

Have anyone of you see successful sia cadet who WEAR SPECS before??:ugh:

Stallone 9th Apr 2011 13:55

as long as u meet the requirement of 500 myopia, 125 astigmatism for each eye, correctable to 6/6 with optical aids, u wear what kinda pattern spectacles also nevermind

lots of cadets wearing specs

pilgrim25 10th Apr 2011 08:26

I am one of those folks still hoping to be called up for an interview.

So there's one more on 15 Apr if that's the one convo's going for.

Any more after that?

At least, it lets me know that there's been interviews and I can always hope that I might get called up. Thanks..

Joseph82 11th Apr 2011 01:37

@ Pilgrim 25, there is an interview held almost every Friday at SIA training center.
Don’t lose hope, if you meet their minimum requirements, they will most definitely call you up. :)

evis 12th Apr 2011 05:25

Hmm, basically how long does it take for them to reply?

It's been two weeks for mine, and my status has turned blank. My application was quicker last year as they replied within 12 days. I wonder if they will reject pple who did not go thru the 2nd interview.

Sometimes, its just giving a 2nd chance. You really don't know whats the reason of failing.

raj8363 12th Apr 2011 06:17

hi,
anyone got through for SIA CADET PILOT interview and going for outward bound soon?
anyone has the details for the next batch?

Joseph82 12th Apr 2011 07:08

@evis,
Rumour has it , that the "Blank" Status means your application is under review.
Well, while i dont believe they will reject people who have gone for couple of rounds of the first interviews, i believe the priority is given to the first time applicants.

ComeFlyaway 12th Apr 2011 14:43

hey Blomqvist,

thanks for the info. so you meant you clarified with the HR with regards to that 'blank' issue?
how was your interview anw?

evis 13th Apr 2011 05:03

@joseph82,

Hmm, I understand the rationale for giving chances to first time applicants, and to speak, I didn't make it in the final interview. Based on what others say in this forum, it seems rather hard to get a second review. I'm pinning my hopes anyway, because I'm confident if given a chance again I might just make it. I talked to a pilot few months back and he said don't stop trying. Requirements wise, I do meet all specified.

@blomvist
If what you said is true, I hope the status do change. I'm checking every other day for updates.

dagger19 15th Apr 2011 02:44

evis,
do let us know if you are granted another interview shot.
my hopes faded when i learnt who rejected in the final interview wont be considered.
have been moving with life since then..

beer-god 17th Apr 2011 16:09

hi guys just a couple of quick qns.

1. i have heard rumours that SIA calls up almost everyone for the 1st interview as long as you meet the very basic requirements so its quite easy to be called up for the first interview. is this true or just a myth?

2. whats the deal with over weight candidates? are they rejected immediately?

just asking coz i have been called up for the first interview and i am slightly obese so just wondering if anyone knows what happens.

thank you!

Stallone 17th Apr 2011 17:20

yes, meet requirement, they'll invite

what's your height and weight?

beer-god 17th Apr 2011 17:38

1.75m 90kg

Stallone 17th Apr 2011 18:00

BMI of 29.38

quite far from the acceptable range of 18.5-24.9

depends on your luck then..

they take height and weight before you go into the interview room

Joseph82 18th Apr 2011 03:06

The Bad news:
Being over-weight will definitely work against you.
In an industry where supply far exceeds demand, even the slightest handicap will work against you.

The Good news:
Well it’s not permanent! You can work on losing weight!

Well my best suggestion to you would be: Highlight your other strengths in the interview. (Amplify your strengths to minimize your weakness)

All the best! :ok:

Joe

Stallone 18th Apr 2011 03:23

being slightly overweight but having a 6/6 perfect eyesight, would that be helpful? haha

somehow i feel SIA takes in anyone with perfect eyesight, is that true?

Joseph82 18th Apr 2011 06:16

Well Having 6/6 eyesight is defnitely a jewel in the crown... just that, its not the only one!

dxdydz 18th Apr 2011 14:06

Hi guys,

Is is possible for anyone to shed more light on the medical examinations for the cadet application?

I heard that there's the additional visit to the eye specialist apart from the routine full body check up. Is that true?

I have a friend who would also like to know if having dry eyes would hinder his cadet application.

Your help is much appreciated. Many thanks!!

Stallone 19th Apr 2011 02:03

what's your eye condition??

as long as below 500 myopia and 125 astig, 60/6 without optical aids, they won't fail you

dxdydz 19th Apr 2011 06:03

My friend has passed both interviews and is awaiting his medical appointment. Just wanted to know what to expect for the medical checkup.

He has perfect eyesight and is worried that his dry eyes won't affect his chances. Anyway the only way for him to know is to attend the medical itself and wait for a confirmation or rejection.

Many thanks for your feedback! :)

Piperj0e 19th Apr 2011 08:46

Guys, anyone waiting for next OBS? And any idea when is the next OBS?

raj8363 20th Apr 2011 10:20

Hi,
I heard next obs is on 6may. Anyone going?
Or anyone waiting for medical result from SIA?

Patientwannabe 23rd Apr 2011 13:18

@dxdydz why are you asking on your friend's behalf?

weird timing on his medical check up since you will usually get informed of it on a Thursday with the check up on a Friday. BTW the whole medical check up is probably a whole day's affair, with the candidate going for a check up with the eyes specialist, amongst others.

PS the results from the medical check up can really swing either way. ST medical may tell you that you are fine, but you may still get rejected, so there is almost no certainty until you receive the letter of acceptance.

And even then, you are still under probation for the next few years

good luck to "your friend" :ok:

borismj 25th Apr 2011 10:23

SIA (India)

Hey guys..
Has anyone from been called for round 1 interviews in Mumbai, India??

Maverick16 2nd May 2011 13:27

Hi guys,

I've been reading your threads and I guess all of you, like myself, applied for the Cadet Pilot position with SQ under the new silkroad software. I applied in February and three days after my application, the word "Application" popped up. About a week later, it was gone. Since then till now, I have received no news about my application. Anyone here facing the same situation? Have you guys received a reply already, since the last thread i see was made in April?

By the way, anyone knows the deadline for the JetStar Asia Ab-initio June intake? Thanks.

Alchemist123 3rd May 2011 03:19

Hi Maverick16,

I applied in early Feb, status changed to "Appllication" in March, and my status turned blank quite a few weeks back.
Till now I have not recieved any notice from them too. My gut feel is that it is not a positive thing. Hope I am wrong

Piperj0e 3rd May 2011 11:22

Anyone called up for next OBS?

kinkykin 3rd May 2011 17:07

if ur application status turns blank, very likely you have been rejected. the few status u will see are "application", "interviewing" and blank. try applying again! dont give up!
