Addendum

The second part to his story was that he was the 3rd B25 sent on that mission - the 2 previous aircraft did not get back to POM so assumed they had been shot down.
Those first 2 days were really bad...

good old CASA insist on the MOS covering alternates, both enroute and off route, and ETPs and PNRs the same. And yet a light twin can plan 5.5 hours...

And actually as I recall the engineer took a bolt from the frame and chose new bolts that matched it. Unfortunately it was an undersized bolt used in the last windscreen replacement :(

we were hired by MAF and went to about a dozen strips stretching east and south of Nalca.
They were still building...
