"In the civilized world you do not have to endure racial/religious profiling and the neverending bureucratic idiocies typical of a third world country."
It's quite civilised here in Dubai, thank you very much! I've no direct experience of Abu Dhabi myself, but I have friends down there who like it just as well (not with ADA). It's certainly a lot nicer than sh*thole, Nebraska or *sshole Alberta!
All of the locals I have met have been extremely pleasant to deal with, from the police to the GCAA (granted, not management in some companies!). Yes, it's a logic-free zone sometimes, but so is UK at the moment under Blair. There are some countries that are as you describe, but you must remember that their religion bears as much relation to Islam as the Ku Klux Klan does to Christianity! And their governements have similar standing to the Mafia. As far as the UAE are concerned, they are one of the few countries in this world who are trying to do something for its citiizens.

You miss the point. Just because you enjoy Dubai and feel treated well does not translate into comparable working conditions for the desperate workers from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Dubai is a stunning sight. Snow in the desert, the richest horse race in the world, tall buildings, modern everything. If you like working there you are indeed lucky. But do not translate your fortuitous employment terms into a political statement for South Asians. The UAE does not "try to do something positive for their citizens", they literally "buy their loyalty". With crude at US $ 60/pb they can "play" as they wish. Yet, they still dress their women in black beekeeper outfits, buy their brides and discard them at will. It works for them, but it is not a blue print for us.

No, I'm not missing the point - the post I was referring to was making a blanket statement that just does not fit, and ignoring the fact that there are many places in N America that are just as bad as third world - you drive through them on the Trans-Canada highway. I know where I would rather be!
"And they can live and work with us without facing daily persecution and racial profiling so abundant in the Thrird World"
Well now, being part of the first nation in North America ain't so hot either!

I hope the point is, if you dont like ADA you can leave, not, America we're so wonderful.
And i would have said the number one problem with the third world is corruption not racial profiling and daily persecution, that sounds like Iraq and Afganistan or any international airport in the states.

Gulf Helicopters anybody?
An old friend of mine is thinking about joining Gulf Helicopters. What do we know about this organisation? Would appreciate an insight into recent experience at this company if there are any Ppruners out there in the 'know'.
Thanks
G

Gulf Helicopters
It used to be a good company, but pilots are bailing out and the reasons given are poor maintenance.
Two previous ADA employees who left for GH have returned back to ADA recently.

My thanks to all those who have PM'd me ref. GH. Your contributions have been passed on to the young man who is just getting his first opportunity to work in the Middle East.
For those who thought this a thinly disguised message on my own behalf I can assure you that I am very happy in Northern Italy driving a box and being let loose on the real thing every 3 months.
Thanks

I heard only positive things about work ethic, housing and general oraganization though when I talked to them the max pay they offerd for a 139 captain was around 70.000 on a six and six schedule - i guess it depends how desperate you are.

I have had job offers from ADA and Horizon...any thoughts on the best way to go? If I go with Horizon, am I likely to be able to swap to ADA in future?
How long do you have to be in ADA before getting married accommodation (enginner)?

Heard a rumour that Gulf Helicopters gave a ten percent pay rise this week. Does that mean that Abu Dhabi Aviation will again be the perennial bottom feeders of the offshore market when it comes to pilot salaries
