Thanks again everyone for your responses.
Airspace alpha – there do indeed seem to be some excellent deals going getting to and from the USA and the LA stopover options also look attractive. The $15 Target fan looks to be the way to especially in Wisconsin summer. Cheap beer and food – you guys are talking my language!
XXX – the information about the missile museum, Pima air and space museum and the boneyard tour looks really interesting and I will research them. Availability of wifi is important to me as I like to chat to Mrs Pedota via Skype or similar every day if I can.
Jack – I think I’ll leave cars alone this time, but thanks for the information about flights.
Ex FSO GRIFFO – what a great video, thanks for sharing! And you are also talking my language about cheap beer and food near the University. My challenge is to figure out which seminars/workshops I want to attend – once the program is listed on the web site. It is already sounding like I will be making another trip to OSH to do the things I think I will miss this time!
Cookie7 – thanks for that . . . it turns out that I am coming home via the twin cities (Minneapolis/St Paul). There certainly are some bargains around at the moment.
Many thanks to all – I am already starting to ‘live the dream’!

The posts from Jaba and Jack came in while I was preparing mine. Pools, beer, Thursday, bottled water sounds a bit cryptic for me . . . let me guess, someone got p!ssed, fell in the pool and missed the show on Thursday? OSH is sounding better all the time.

Pedota,
I didn't fall in Jaba's pool although I was a bit pissed at times you won't believe the price of beer when you get there Sierra Nevada pale ale don't get too used it though, costs a fortune here
Grab one of those cheap airfares though. They're a lot cheaper than last year. Quite a few people do OSH every second year, that way you'll see everything in about 5 Oshkosh's

I stayed at a home share which was brilliant and food was sensational with the best ribs I've ever had. I got to know someone staying at the rv park and that was fun with parties and bbq at night. And each day at the show is different so you need to go each day.
Also we drove up to Door County about 50 miles away. Sensational scenary and seafood there. I mingled with Americans rather than ozzies and had a fantastic time. Loved talking to the middle aged reservist pilots such as A10 drivers with much battle experience yet are laid back and down to earth.

Said in a loud army drill sergeant voice..... THURSDAY IS JEITT DAY!!!!
Except there was more Jet action Friday arv.... Go figure
Probably no JEITT DAY anymore due Obama wasting money on social programs that fail. Any fast kero burners will be private and generous owners.
You will still love very minute. Storms can be fun too!
Hey Ranga, a few folk, Jamjar too want to go next year, I might need a bigger house.... If there is such a thing. Last one was pretty good

I was there two years ago for the first time, stayed at the University of Oskosh. Shared a room with a mate. Simple students dormitory rooms, ours didn't have air condition. Bath and showers are on the same floor, not in the rooms.
It was incredibly hot those days. Expect to walk a lot in summer heat.
The area is huge.
Visiting airplanes are put together by type and category, so You'll find all lets say Piper Cubs in one place or old russian warbirds together in one place.
There is a shuttle bus going from the University campus to the airshow. Around the campus there are several pubs that also offer food like burgers with fries.
We were there also the day before the official opening (sunday) and visited the Oskosh air museum.
Have fun!

Ohh and have at least 2 full days at the USAF Museum in Dayton OH. So you need to arrive one day...have two days and leave the next. Don't try to squeeze it in a day less.
I might go back.

Unforgettable Memories
- Sitting on the grass eating corn on the cob and cheese curds watching the airplanes leave in the evening
- 20 minute conversation with 3 REAL Tuskegee Airmen
- Very bad landing by A380
Make sure to buy or bring a sturdy umbrella, guaranteed at least one thunderstorm.
Onsite food is uniformly awful. pack a lunch, lots of water.
If the University dorms are not air conditioned I would consider staying elsewhere, it is unbearably hot and noisy (since everyone keeps their door open) . Holiday Inn Green Bay is OK if all else fills up. 40 miles away.
I flew into Chicago and drove up.

Thanks again everyone for your contributions . . . I am starting to get the picture about what to do and expect.
ChrisJ800 – I considered the home stay option (including with some friends of a mate in Fond du lac but thought it was all a bit personal) and in any event I still needed to get to OSH every day. Maybe I should just chill and enjoy the ribs, parties and shows.
Jaba – I HEAR YOU BUT I HOPE YOU ARE WRONG about the Jeit day on Thursday. We’ll see . . . but I won’t be hanging around in Dayton as I am heading to Europe on (another) motor cycling tour a couple of days after I get home to Oz – retirement is such a wonderful thing and I can indulge myself whenever I want!
Asrian – thanks for the advice about the dorm rooms – it will remind me of my own university days many years ago. I am well prepared for the worst of American food, thanks! And I think I might head to the Air Museum on the Sunday morning as well, so thanks for that hint.
Ohnutsiforgot – what a great moniker! Hopefully I can create some of my own memories like sitting on the grass and watching the planes depart and eating a special food. I am prepared for the mid-west August thunderstorms and will bring a brollie and rain jacket. I agree with you (and others) about American food . . . my own very own basic lunch creations will be infinitely better. And a Target (or Wal-Mart) fan is definitely on my shopping list when I arrive – along with the portable chair.
Maybe I will be one of the ‘soft ones’ looking for a room next year Ranga . . . I’m already overwhelmed by the too many options for this year!
Cheers

Pedota,
Don't worry about staying in the dorms, I'm sure it'll be ok, in the end not too many complain about it. I still think the RV in the campground is easily the best option but you need a couple of people to do it. On one of those blindingly hot days we'd go back to camp and fire up the air-con in the RV, mmmmm, home stay, Jaba's was damn good, it suited his circumstances way better and that's what it's about really. Based on what you have said the uni is far and away the best option for you

Yeah......Beer Gin you name it a fraction of the price at home. What is more aussie red wine at about 1/3 the price of home.
Beach King and the bunny bottle...... You are correct XXX that took some time to get over. Even several years later.
Last years storm was a pearler.

Jaba, if you took that video from the international tent I was probably standing beside you.
To get an understanding of the true size of Oshkosh go to Google earth- the current imagery is dated 25 July 2011 and shows Airventure in all its glory- check out how aircraft are often parked by type: Dc3's, warbirds, jet warbirds, Varieze's, etc etc. Last year of course it was Piper cubs and an astounding field of Vans RV's. I had seen a couple in Australia but they were there literally by the acre. And incidentally the huge number of sand camouflaged vehicles on the eastern side visible in GE and also on most show images are ex-military equipment for sale. I happened across a driver who was saying humungous armour-plated graders with 'only a few scratches" used in mine-clearing in Iraq were going for a song.
If you are not taking a car then the EAA shuttle bus goes from Blackhawk common at the Uni directly to the site- and from there they have shuttle buses also going to Kmart/Target etc. it is, as has been said, incredibly well organised.
A few things newish on the EAA website: Firstly a basic list of available workshops at : EAA AirVenture Oshkosh - Workshops
Second the international tent has moved a block north to make way for the show stage that is now on the edge of the apron.
Thirdly, prices for joyrides are: B17 $409 advanced purchase, Trimotor $75 walk up, Bell 47 $49 walk up- the best value of the show.

That was at one of the food halls.....tables chairs you name it were blowing around. I had folk all backed up behind a few vertical tables as shields there was that much debris flying.
Even that was exciting.
Kirby Chambliss was airborne during/inside that storm. with nowhere to go Probably has not spoken publically about it but one of our friends over here is good friends with Kirby and his wife....he was sipping champagne with him after in the VIP tent afterwards....the story makes you wonder how the prop held. At least it was not a SE Qld storm full of hail etc.
Too many stories not enough time to time them all.
Just Do It!

Good news, a second night show has been added
Exert:
The EAA AirVenture Oshkosh Night Air Show, one of the most popular additions to The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration lineup over the past quarter-century, will be even bigger in 2013 with the addition of a second night show scheduled for Wednesday, July 31.
"The additional night show is being scheduled this year in response to those EAA members and AirVenture attendees who said they missed this phenomenal event because they came to Oshkosh earlier in the week," said Jim DiMatteo, EAA's vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. "We talked with the participating performers and they're just as excited to have an additional opportunity to fly the twilight show here as the thousands who have enjoyed it each year."
The inaugural EAA AirVenture Night Air Show in 2010 was an instant hit, drawing tens of thousands of people to the flightline for an unmatched display of piloting skill and dazzling light in the twilight over Oshkosh.
Among the performers already committed to both night shows at Oshkosh are:

The Texans were superb last year in the night show, friggin' awesome
And Matt Yonkin put on a show during the day in the Beech 18 that put a huge smile on the face, waiting for his night approval. It will be something to behold at night
