I think a good idea would be to nominate maybe 1-2 training facilities in Sydney and Melbourne e.t.c. and endorse them for the cadets to attend. I think a different approach from the way the QF cadetship works would be alright. And if there wanting to have cadets crewing flights within 8 months they are going to have to find flying schools that will devote there time particularly to the cadets, for 'quality' to ensue.

8 months seems unrealistic. How long does it take to train a cadet at the established cadet flying schools in Oz? How long does a cadet train for at China Southern, FTA or Singapore Flying College? If they do go down the MPL path (which is designed specifically for this purpose), then it's still going to take 15 to 18 months.

Training Wheels,
Agree with you but I doubt the MPL is an option that REX will look at due to the fact that they only expect a maximum of 6 years service from the cadets. An MPL, which is primarily for Jet aircraft anyway would then leave cadets once out of REX in a bad situation as they have a SAAB 340 endorsement and this then means more money having to be forked out to join an airline. Or if REX do plan to introduce the MPL into the cadet training i don't think they will make many friends with the idea.

The cadets will be trained I would say as per macflite - (now jetflite) have done for years this is to train CPL - then rating and move onto line as F/O It would then be a matter of ICUS time before the cadet was promoted. Or as REX already has Air link under them they could possibly place cadets with them and put them on the C310 PA30 etc....

). Having their cadets train for the MPL would mean less chance for that to happen, as it leaves the cadets with few options but to work their way up the ladder with the one operator that sponsored their training.

Training Wheels,
If this is there course of action i believe they will lose many fit applicants (myself included) and may even struggle filling the required number of positions required. If you leave up and comers with that options, few will take it. Why would I fork out 40k (with the magnificent REX loan) or more just to be stuck in a minimal progressing career. If you want to get out of it its' more money, money , money!

This might be true but you might get a lot of bitter MPL pilots after a few years. REX's work culture will not change over night. Treat employees badly and they will find a way to pay out their loan and move on to greener pastures.
Part of their problem is retaining their pilots coz many are jumping ship for better terms and conditions .. Having their cadets train for the MPL would mean less chance for that to happen.

Yep, good point Jeps, but I think this cadet program is more to help them than it is to help us achieve our dream of flying for a career.

Would be interesting to know when they actually start "reviewing all applications" as there has been no deadlines set.

Well ive applied and got the generic response as well, i should have read this thread first as i asked whehter REX is doing the training or if we have to choose our school.
Shall be interesting to see what happens, and i may actually be able to afford to do this!
Re: Doing diploma courses, QF cadetship etc.
I went into all the banks and as soon as i said pilots licence they brushed me off and said that i cant get a loan and the whore at the NAB laughed at me when i said how could i get a 40k loan, secured with guarntors etc. So its not easy to get money to train with.
But i went and bought a car and got a 14,000 unsecured loan no problems through Esanda which i believe is the ANZ, but they wouldnt give me the money because im too young and not classified as a student and its not a personal loan
pisses me off that the banks dont really give us young guys chances.
What really !!!!es me is that we arent classified as students, not classifieds as a Personal Loan
, so what are we classifed as then?
Geez at this rate it'll be uni-which i may regret or to drive trains!

UNI will be good. At least you will have a back up if Aviation T & C haven't improved in the next 3 years.
If you enroll in an approved CPL course you are considered a student as far as centrelink is concerned. I agree banks are unfair but you can't blame them. Would you risk loaning someone 40K when their earning potential is only around 40k in the first 5 years of employment?

Yeah i can defintley see it in that respect as well and as havick said not like you can sell them your pilots licence.
Uni is a huge decision to make and it could be good, but im worried coming out the end and not having a CPL, would do my PPL though.
I had a sudden thought go to the bank get a nice big student loan and get a loan you repay after uni and say its for uni and use it for flying

Just thought I'd let you all know i got my email back from REX today just the thank you for applying if you proceed to the next level we will contact you.
And just for info. I got a just under $30k loan from ANZ for my training. But it was a personal loan still i told her it was for flying and the only thing the lady made me do was get loan insurance. And i was only 20 when I got the loan earning the grand net sum of $325 per week.

pilotdude09,
Not sure whether this could help or not, but trying getting a "line of credit" if your parents have a good financial history (banks/credit unions don't usually offer it up front). Basically it is like a credit card in concept, however you draw money out of the account with loaned money and the interest is calculated on that just like credit card works. You may want to look it up on the web or maybe someone else might know what it is in more detail, as I don't really know much about it.
Cheers
Tim
