Cessna had a backup plan just in case the 172 flopped. It was the 170C and it sported the square tail of the 172. They built four in 1956 before the 170C was swamped by 172 sales. The above photo pretty much depicts a 170C as it would've looked.

O.K. I'll bite..
Looks like Queensland - west of the Divide - in the cattle heartland with regrowth on the pulled bits. Bit dry - but then a lot of places are, -before the Summer storms. Nice hard strip for when it does rain, grass nicely mowed (but then it doesn't need cutting often yet), didn't see the sock, but whoever looks after the strip probably made sure it had a good white one (the cones have survived the slasher after all). Your GPS's would get a workout to find it when the storms are around, but at least the hills are a fair way away. Don't recognise it, so haven't been there..
O.K. looked at it again, and saw the sock..

Looks a bit like Wollogorang to me, but it's a long time since I was there last.
Be interesting to hear from Skywagon185 - there's a good chance that he has dropped baits out of this strip.

One of my favorite aircraft was the Rockwell 114. Very short and lots of power, now that thing used to "fishtail" but you did get used to it and after a while, actually got to like it. I did all of my cpl nav's in the Rockwell coz it was so much fun

Yes, and to think I grew up not far west of there - pre-licence, - AND used to fly past it via Charon Point from Rocky to Mackay with the papers off the Electra Freighter in one of Don Millroys Cherokee 6's.. The main highway went up inland then. Never landed, or saw it from FTDK's circuit height on a clear day tho.. should almost be able to see Marble Island from there..

One for the old hands - 200 series Twin Otter - in this case DQ-FDK
Of the mechanical checklists used - personally prefer the old Saf-Go flipup/flipdown ones to the roller blind ones for single pilot ops. Could get more on a roller blind, but you pretty well needed a co-pilot along just to read it so you didn't miss things if you relied on it. Not many memory items in a Twotter, and most times now with two pilots, each has a double sided laminated card one in their side pocket. (They also make handy clip-on sunshades if you have the rail inside the screen).
The old Saf-Go were handy in a Baron though to not forget some things.. See in the latest Aviation Trader that APNG are looking for some of the old ones.
