While standing on a hill at Davenport overlooking AKL harbour on Saturday morning a Spitfire whistled past too.
Yeah... Doug's out in the Spitfire pretty regularly... great to see it's not locked up in some hangar or museum, but out doing what it does best!!

Lake Eyre?

Can someone in the know please tell me, how much of this year's Queensland flood water will get to the Lake and if so, how long will it take to get there?

Any pics from those who have them would be great.

ABX - I have found the Lake Eyre Yacht Club (seriously!) site to have the most current and reliable information (see Lake Eyre Yacht Club). If you are serious about flying out there, I recommend that you get in touch with Trevor Wright from Wright Air. He runs a fleet of sight seeing aircaft from William Creek and will give you information about some local 'procedures'. He is a really nice bloke and very helpful, but please only bug him if you are actually going.

Cheers

Lake Eyre

Thanks Pedota, there is some interesting info on the Lake Eyre Yacht Club site.

I was up there and flew over it last September, I'm not currently planning on going back just yet, I was just wondering if the flood waters from this year's rains would make it to the lake...

...and if anyone has some good photos from the area.

Cheers,
ABX

Thumbs up

I don't know about 'good photos' but I took these a few weeks back on the trusty iPhone (3GS). Flying BNE-PER. Pretty much over the middle of Lake Eyre and looking south.

And a couple of his "more delightful" operators are regular ppruners too, so if you get sound advice from here ..............it may well be sound indeed.....for a change!

Shame it's not the full version, ran this one night at the Parafield Flying Club in 16 mm.

Hmm, google reveals that it's available on DVD in Australia if anyone is interested, title is The Ships That Flew.

Sacred?

Did someone say Yacht Club ?
Haven't they shut it down? Was disrespectful to the giant serpant god/snake that lives in the dream time in the lake.

Thanks for that PF-awesome stuff. As a teenager living in Mosman in the 70s when the wind was right they used to fly over our house coming and going from Rose Bay. Even went to LHI on one for holidays once near the end if the flying boat era.

Lake Eyre

Thanks Jaba!

ABX: Lake Eyre is at approx 75% capacity at the moment and filling! The western creeks and rivers (Neales and Peake) have also been contributing to the lake this year feeding the most water since 1989. More is on the way from the west after 135mm fell this weekend around Oodnadatta! The floodwater around Bedourie is amazing and the Eyre Creek and Diamantina are swollen! Birdsville is OUT OF AVGAS for anyone thinking of going in there and all roads are cutoff, not expected to be open for roughly another 3 weeks. This water is starting to flow into the Goyder Lagoon area now and although its hard to tell exactly, will still probably be a 4-6 weeks before entering the Lake. Kalamurina Station have 2 massive levy banks between them and the Warburton River but Mark is in the process of moving a make-shift house and as much as possible up onto their highest sandhill. Yesterday the Cooper Creek was reading 5.7metres over the causeway at Innaminka (and all the septics were overflowing into the hotel ). This water is slowly heading down towards the Birdsville Track although the punt is not yet in use again. Maintenance is being done on the punt in the anticipation of launching again soon! Lake Eyre South is completely full and sitting at a depth of around 2.5metres. Rumours are rife that the Lake will reach 1974 status, but time will tell! Hope this helps...will post photos soon!
