PNG CAA Union on strike

Apparently as of last night the PNG CAA Union is on strike.

No flights as yet out of POM with the inbound PX Singapore flight supposedly being diverted to Cairns.

Tinny that first pic looks like the grass just opposite the hangar. The area I refer to was by the trees past SEM and SEA in your second piccy.

As an aside to the SEP restoration back in early '87 (about 8 months before I joined Talair) the L/H (might have been the R/H) aileron on my then mount P2-BAF was damaged when the hand brake failed while I was retrieving some chocks and it pivoted 90 degrees and rolled backwards, from outside the tower, down the hill (with me chasing it) and came to rest against a fire truck. Talair kindly lent us the one off SEP in the graveyard which was duly 'restored' and bolted on BAF. We returned it as soon as BAF's was repaired.

Perhaps that was the clincher for Dennis all those years later..."Well the aileron is as good as new - might as well finish the job"

The aircraft had rolled slowly past 3 burly Eastern Highlander 'Firemen', the wingtip not 10 feet away...they all stood there shoulder to shoulder, arms crossed, and simply watched it roll past and come to rest against the truck. I launched into them..."What the **** were you thinking - why didn't you grab it - you stupid...."

A Talair pilot I had been chatting to as I grabbed the chocks and headed back to BAF arrived at the scene hot on my heels and quietly said "Chuck, calm down". "But they just stood there and watched it roll past!!!"

"Was it on fire?"

Having pushed the aircraft clear we reached inside to try and set the park brake and found all the teeth stripped off the brake handle...I guess one had failed and all the rest followed like dominos.

From Friday's 'Pos Guria'

Post Courier; Friday 18th July
CAA strike fear

AIR services in Papua New Guinea could be disrupted today if the three Civil Aviation unions decide to go on strike.
Civil Aviation Authority chief executive officer Joseph Kintau could not be contacted last night to comment on the planned strike.
The action stems from the management’s failure to address issues related to outstanding public service entitlements and others.
However, a senior officer in CAA, who did not want to be named, last night brushed aside rumours of the strike saying they were not true.
The officer said although the news on the streets by the members of the union is that the strike will proceed today, certain procedural requirements were not followed and that there is nothing officially notifying the management that a strike is planned to proceed.
The union in a letter dated July 17, demanded that a new enterprise agreement should be resolved between CAA management and the combined CAA unions to cover the full payments of all accrued public service entitlements for staff.
They are demanding:
* ALL outstanding accrued public service entitlements of all staff shall immediately be paid after calculations are agreed to between the individual staff concerned, the union and CAA management;
* ALL outstanding accrued public service entitlements of all staff shall immediately be paid after calculations are agreed to between the individual staff concerned; the union and CAA management
* CPI adjustment that have been awarded to public service up to 2008 and up to the date of the new enterprise agreement shall be paid to all the staff
* THE PBSS salary increments that have been awarded to public service up to 2008 and to the date of the new enterprise agreement shall also be paid to the staff
* THAT MILOL, MILOF, ex-gratia and POSF shall be adjusted and paid to all staff up to the date the new agreement, after the salary rates have been adjusted upwards by the movements in the CPI and PBSS up to 2008;
* ALL staff be paid their full leave fares entitlements equivalent to the normal public service entitlements; and
* ALL parties must enter into negotiations immediately to conclude an industrial agreement to provide for all terms and conditions of employment for all staff employed in the CAA. This included the corporate organisational structure of all CAA entities and placements of staff against specific positions.
The senior officer said they were watching from the grapevine that there could be a strike and that they were hoping that the unions would not go on strike.
MEANWHILE, the Air Niugini CEO Wasantha Kumarasiri said last night he was aware of the strike threat by the CAA unions and was urgently putting in stringent measures in case the strike really proceeded.
Mr Kumarasiri said, however, that they were hopeful that the issues would be resolved and that all will be normal today. The strike, if it goes ahead, will disrupt flight services provided by Air Niugini and other airlines.
“If the strike goes ahead the flight coming in from Singapore to Port Moresby in the morning has to be diverted to Cairns, this if the situation warrants, we may have to divert the plane to Cairns,” Mr Kumarasiri said.
He said not only that but also there was the issue of the landowners at Kokopo who threatened to close the Tokua Airport today as they want to negotiate compensation with their provincial government relating to land issues.
Members of the PNG Air Traffic Controllers Association, Civil Aviation National Technical Staff Association and the PNG Airport Fire Fighters Association were planning the strike.

From the National. THursday 24th JUly.

Nothing in the Posguria !

600 stranded in Sydney
TECHNICAL problems with Air Niugini aircrafts had left about 600 Papua New Guineans stranded in Sydney, Australia.
The mainly catholic youths who had gone to Sydney for the World Youth Day were forced to seek refuge at Homebush, the home of the Olympic Stadium where many visitors were housed.
But the chilly Sydney winter had taken its toll with a number of youths coming down with cold, flu and malaria. A woman suffering from malaria had to be rushed to the Concorde Hospital for treatment.
The youths have medical cover for the pilgrimage which expired yesterday.
On Monday and Tuesday, they were taken to Sydney’s Kingsmead Airport where they waited in vain for their Air Niugini flight.
“We’ve been stranded here since Monday,” spokesperson Noel Wafie said by phone yesterday from Sydney.
“We are cold and sick here and no one has told us what was going on. Only today someone told us we may be bused to Brisbane to catch our flights,” Wafie said, adding the little money they went with had run out.
“We are the only ones here. Everyone else had gone home,” he said of the rest of the visitors from around the world who shared Homebush with them during the Pope’s visit.
Air Niugini admitted it was having problems with a number of its aircrafts.
Air Niugini marketing manager Colin Little said on Tuesday that the Boeing 767 that was scheduled to pick them up developed hydraulic problems and was grounded in Brisbane.
Mr Little said its crew had also run out of hours, and the company was sending a new crew from Port Moresby in an F100. Why they could not fly yesterday was not explained.
Mr Little also said the chartered Embraer aircraft had developed problems and was grounded in Nadi, Fiji, along with another aircraft used to ferry the PNG contingent to the South Pacific Festival.
Mr Wafie said the youths stranded were from different dioceses in the country including Rabaul, Wewak, Kerema, Mt Hagen, Kavieng and Simbu.
He said among them was a woman who was in her late stages of pregnancy, and they were worried about her health and wellbeing.
He said the World Youth Day committee was doing its best to assist them, but they received no visit from the PNG High Commissioner in Canberra.
It is understood late yesterday that Air Niugini had chartered buses to move them all from Sydney to Brisbane, where they will be uplifted back to Port Moresby.
It takes about a day to get from Sydney to Brisbane.

This was in this mornings pos guria, albiet in The Drum:

Home sweet home
WORD from the World Youth Day capital, Sydney, is that some of our pilgrims either couldn’t stand the cold weather or were not able to get a shower. A wantok passing by one group at the Sydney airport on Monday reckoned there was a musty whiff to the crowd. Maybe having got to close quarters with the Pope, they wanted to keep a lasting impression and not “wash it off’’!

You would have thought they would have mentioned something about the delays?

Hmmmmmmm.

PX woes continue

Today's Post Courier

Tourism industry petitions airline
TRAVEL and tourism operators have penned an open letter to Air Niugini, complaining about the bad effects on their industry from the airline’s performance in recent times.
More than 80 hotels, lodges, tour groups, car hire companies, the Tourism Promotion Authority and the Tourism Industry Association, all signed up to the complaint letter.
In response, Air Niugini chief executive officer Wasantha Kumarasiri said that he had not officially received the report although he had seen a copy.
However, the airline management had been working on the problem areas and had made some changes as of July 14 which were already starting to have good effects.
Mr Kumarasiri said apart from the problem at Sydney, where Catholic pilgrims were stranded, flights had more or less run on time since July 14, especially on domestic routes.
The letter sent to him said a recent industry poll showed tourism operators, accommodation providers, agents and wholesalers considered the airline’s performance “lacks professionalism’’ in providing contracted services.
“The daily, ever increasing number of disrupted, delayed and cancelled flights is resulting in disgruntled passengers and increasing costs,’’ the letter said.
“Over the past 25 years we have never seen such a lack of performance and non-supply of service to our clients.
“Disrupts are countrywide, impact on all sectors of tourism and there is a common thread of related problems conveyed by many members of the industry.
“Industry principals who have been longtime supporters of Air Niugini no longer want to make excuses or apologise for something they have no control over and are now critical, which is a sad state of affairs for the national carrier of PNG.’’
The industry letter writers said they were open to meeting the airline managers to discuss the issues and work towards a solution “that is effective, ongoing and mutually beneficial’’.
“We sincerely hope you find this a constructive insight from outside the confines of the airline and fully appreciate that we, as an industry, consider the existing situation intolerable,’’ the letter said.
“Our aim is to reach a congenial understanding with Air Niugini that will allow tourism in PNG to prosper and provide the economic benefits so many of our Pacific neighbours enjoy from this industry.’’

After 2 years at the helm, the situation seems to go from bad to worse for this CEO. Maybe it is time he accepted some of the responsibility for the woeful performance??? Seems he blames all but himself.

Isn't that the truth !!! The CEO is very good at pointing fingers but he is ultimately responsible.. He should be sacked by the board...
