TOP GUN : Inside the RAF (where did it go?)
Beagle hasn't had any hair since before the Earth cooled! ;-)
OI! I resemble that remark, Specaircrew!
What did you think of the Poseidon segments in last night's episode? Rather plusher than that old Comet-derived thing you once flew - and certainly more than the Mk3ph3 Shacklebomber in which I once did a trip in 1969!
A pity that any youngsters who watched last night's programme and now yearn to fly a Typhoon will have to wait years before they ever get the chance though......

It will be interesting to see how they last bouncing around at low level compared to their bretheren taking the plus two's on holiday at higher smoother altitude.
I thought that the idea was that with the new systems and sensor suite they would not need to do anywhere near the amount of low level stuff that Nimrod used to do? Undoubtably a rougher time than a commercial version but perhaps many fewer cycles when compared to an Easyjet or Ryanair machine doing eight plus sectors a day?
Just watched the first episode and I'm a tad confused, am I right in thinking that one of the pilots is not from the Royal Air Force, but actually from the Fleet Air Arm?
Just epaulettes at the end that made me think that.
No reference made to the RN, so not sure if I've got that right!
Not having served, I'm not certain, any ideas ladies and gents?
Ta very much,
Chris.

The RN officer was of course there to add some extra tone!

Ok. Lurved the whole series despite falling asleep during one. Bort, gorra comment on the last episode. The Typhoon Ace looked outa shape. Trying to squeeze into the cockpit, he snagged something on his flying suit that rendered the entire mission u/s. Trying to prove he was combat ready, chubs didn't even make it out of the hangar during a QRA.
Then; that voice -! ;. Er, just me ? Sounded like he had swallowed his oxy mask. Sounded the same on or off mask/radio. The heavy regional accent made it all worse and, sorry, but I understood nothing Chubs had to say throughout.
Gosh, well done though Ch4. Series rocked.

Always great excitement and gossip when that rara avis, an RN officer, was seen in JHQ Rheindahlen. Nearest sighting was usually at Wegburg Hospital as medic.
If you had watched the “Valley” programme a while ago you would have seen a young lady ( can I say that?)naval aviator graduate onto Typhoons and on good authority still there plus a friends son also navy, currently flying on a operational squadron, seconded not sure that is the correct term

Well floating about on a boat with only 8 aircraft, they need to find something for their spare pilots to do.
Once got diverted on Tankers into Lossie - I think Kinloss was closed and Marham clampers. We went in the bar and this Naval chap said 'What are you having?' We ordered five pints but the barman said what are your bar numbers ? We thought that the Naval chap was buying but the barman explained there was no 'treating'. After a few pints the bar got very warm and we asked the same naval chap if he'd open a porthole. He said that on this ship they were 'windows' !
Didn't realise it was once a RNAS btw!
Thread drift.
Something hard to imagine in Lossie now is a double header steam train pulling into Lossie station with 11 or 12 carriages disgorging about 1000 (so I was told) sailors in the early 60’s. The last carriage was almost at the level crossing where Seatown road meets Clifton road.
Not all low level flying was done over the sea – copy of a picture I bought from one of the drinking establishments in Lossie.

It doesn't but it doesn't matter how good your camara is, you're not going to be able to read a ship's name through cloud (still better than spending many hours at 200' trying to read the name through a pair binos though)!
