He said he lost the engine before he decided to bail out.
But as often in such problematic relationships there are two sides to the same story.
That was probably the wisest decision ever made,

by the engine, to leave him.

In the low-budget follow-up Bond film, "Time to Die", George Lazenby, now 83, struggles to get out of the seat to dive after Jaws, to grab his parachute. Sadly, the budget didn't run to actual parachutes, as George will find out when he splats on top of Jaws.
