Rear gunner was the last of the crew to realise they were crashing. Highlights to his mum that he was very safe.

Having transferred from a Lancaster Squadron Hoskins was glad there were 2 less engines to repair

You said "the pilots need more armor, to hell with the CG." I might have missed a couple of Sunday school classes, but I don't recall anything about hell being aft of the main gear.
