Try the Air League http://www.airleague.co.uk/ they do a whole host of scholarships for people of all interests and you needn't have to be an Air Cadet to benefit [though that helps]. I even got an Engineering Scholarship through them.

If you're in Cadets, go for Gliding Schols, Flying Schols and basically anything flying related.

There are also scholarships offered by RAFA (who very kindly awarded me one many moons ago!)

Alex, 100m is just an example... Please read my post properly before answering.
I could of said 10 mile stamina jogging, or 1 basket/minute (international system) underwater basket weaving, unless you've decided to do a different degree .

The point is that to pass you have to be fit, and not just be able to do the specific activity.

Royal Navy - My options?!

Hiya, i just wanted some advice from peeps who are in the navy at the moment, or just left!

I want to join as a pilot for the fleet air arm, but i need to lose a load of weight before i can go to the AIB, like half a year's worth of weight! So in your opinions, should i just crack on with the losing weight, or should i apply for a different branch and then try and change over to pilot after a few years?!

I was already thinking of warfare officer as second choice anyways.

any help would be appreciated greatly!

SO

p.s. if you're based at Culdrose please could you send me a PM!? cheers

Lose the weight - your chances of crossing over will be slim. Boom Boom

You'll fail the fitness test at AIB whether it's Pilot or Wafare you want - the test is the same for both, though the medical is tougher for aircrew.

Quite how you've got so lardy at 18 is worrying though - when was the last time you stepped away from the PC/TV/Playstation? It may suggest that there's more you need to do than just lose weight if you are to impress the AIB.

Well i've got a pretty interesting CV and have done many activites - bronze/silver/gold Duke of Edinburgh's awards - led loads of cadet night navigation/speed marches and what have you... Advanced swimming etc etc - so i'm not as lazy as it may seem!

i'm on the road to losing the weight anyways!

Wow Snowy you are an ideal candidate. If you are a lard arse though, despite this activity, then the only option is to stop eating. Have you tried Weight Watchers? Dust is supposed to be very tasty.

BTW unless you seriously want to look out of a window whilst travelling at 12kts for 4 hours a day and have SOD ALL to do with aviation (other then calling "Flying Stations") I SERIOUSLY suggest that you do not even hint that Warfare Officer (X) is acceptable. Make sure that they know that the only thing you are interested in is Warfare (Pilot). Trust me being offered Warfare Officer is very tempting when you are in your shoes, but if you accept it you will inevitably be dissappointed if your heart belongs in the air.

Going back to an old post have you tried the RAF yet? They do have more airframes (just!).

MFWF

P.S Don't forget to ring the bell in Culdrose Wardroom on your POAC.

Yeah guys i'm on the whole green day/red day slimming world diet, doing exercise daily, getting the weight off. - just saying it'll take some time!

So, you don't suggest trying other branches and then swapping over!?

I considered the RAF for a long time, as i was in the Air Cadets and at a VGS, everything was focused towards the RAF! However when it came to chatting to the guys at the AFCO, the RN people were far more helpful and enthusiastic than the RAF, who really do put you down.

Also i like the idea of being on a ship with an aircraft, instead of being stationed somewhere for three years (I know i could be at Culdrose or Yeovilton, but there'd still be hope). Surely you'd get to see a little more of the world than with the RAF?!

Concur completely with MFWF - DO NOT ACCEPT Fishead if you want to fly. IT will NOT happen!

From a non-WAFU standpoint, do not even think that you could re-cat easily. Used to be a lie told to young rating recruits at the AFCO that they could easily transfer once they joined up, little did they know. If you want pilot, lose the weight and apply later.

Please correct me if I'm getting a gash dit here, but a good friend of mine who recently graduated said most of the University Air Squadron guys she knew who went on to fly went into the RN as the RAF didn't have any places to offer.

Got to say I think that's a bit much.

Out of the 12 guys who've graduated from university/the UAS in the past year as pilot, all have gone into the RAF. Only one guy is considering the RN more owing to a medical fault than any other.

Of course, all UAS' and people are different, just talking from my experience on my UAS.

Seeing the world!

It all depends on what parts of the world you want to see! And from where you want to see it! Big boat versus nice hotel/dusty tent?!
I've seen lots of it thankyou very much!

Snowy,

Don't whatever you do fall for the old "you can change once you're in" routine. Everyone knows that fishheads don't change - they're all t**ts.

Co-incidently the crabs are all t**ts as well.

FAA is the way of the future, at least until it becomes absorbed into UKHELFOR through lack of interest from the Admiralty.

Your POAC should get you all the answers you need, talk to the boys in the wardroom over a game of uckers...........after ringing the bell.

Suck backs, no blow backs!!

Snowy

If you want it bad enough, then losing weight won't be a problem.

I recently went through an application process, and had to do some extensive fitness "stuff" after leaving school nearly 18 years ago - and having never exercised since (!!). It seemed unsurmountable until I realised how much I wanted it - then it just wasn't an issue.

Good luck

AIDU - i wasn't asking advice about getting off my enlarged derrier, and maybe you should consider that some people find it easier to lose the weight when they're in the environment that they enjoy the most!!

kiwi chick and chimp boy - Cheers for your comments, positive and helpful!

Thinking Of Becomnig A Navy Pilot

Hi there,
This is my first post on this site so be nice.

I'm currently workign as a Designer in the oil industry but have also been taking flying lessons towards my PPL for helcopters.

I wanted to move into a commercial role to make a career from flying however the finacial side has beaten me. Now The thought of entering the RAF/Royal navy never really occurred to me until early last year when I got talking to an RAF heli pilot.

So I guess Im rather unconventional in comparison to others who have lived/breathed the forces all their life. I'm now 25 and to old for the RAF, however the Navy will acept me directly as an officer. I have a few questions though which I have had answered by the RN but I would like a second opinion....

1. I want to fly helicopters. Thats primarily why I want to join. Is it likely that i would end up a pilot or is it like a 1/1000 chance? I'm fit, pretty smart, qualified in design and engineering and have some flying experience.

2. I still aspire to being a commercial pilot some day. Is the navy a good route to acheiving this? I mean I would very much enjoy the navy lifestyle etc, but i wouldnt want to be seen as using the navy just for a CPL.

3. I have family and friends and a girlfriend in Aberdeen. How often would i realistically see them if i was a navy pilot?

4. While moeny isnt everything I would be giving up a farily high paid job to do this. What should i expect to be paid (roughly) after training?

5. Search and rescue really appeals to me! Are there opportunities to work in this field or is it fairly difficult to get into.

Moving to the Navy would be a BIG move for me and I would be giving up a career which I have worked hard for in exchange for living the flying dream. I just want to make sure while im living the dream I can still maintain other aspects of my life and manage to 'pay the bills'.

One other thing... im not saying i would leave the navy early, but if that was the case, how soon after training can you leave if working as a pilot.

Thanks in advance!

Ewan.
