I would side with your friends. I admit I have a slightly jaundiced view of both roles (having done both to some extent).
First, competition for Int is high as the number of slots is low. As a first tourist your street cred will be low. Once you gain experience you will drift away from the pointy end into a hole in the ground (figuratively speaking).
As for Fighter Controller, fighter controllers fly in the E3. Those that don't will join Int underground! (again figuratively speaking).
Do what A_A says, find out more about your asthma and whether it might affect you as a fighter controller.
