Hi gents....what is the likelyhood of EK reducing the total time required for a FO's position?? It appears that there is a fairly heavy recruitment drive? If so do you reakon that 3000 hrs total of which 2850 hours on Jet (B737) would be of any interest?? Around a thousand short of total time required but around a thousand hours excess to the min Jet time in excess of 55k

I have just received the flightglobal email about it.

Its was advertised in Flight global magazine since last thursday. Anyway you didnt miss much, mainly about how cool Dubai is to live and what a fabby airline it is.

But the bottom line is still the high requirements 4000 hrs min etc and they are not prepared to move on this.

The room was full of old mid to late 50 captains not interested in having to go into EK as an FO they where complaining about no DC.

There were rumours last year about not accepting pilots without civilian experience.
What is the situation now?

Fastman, that's a very interesting first post. Perhaps you would like to enlighten us as to what's so bad about Korean (who seem to be poaching a fair share of EK drivers) and what's so great about EK (who are desperate for pilots). BTW it's almost summer in Dubai, that frying pan is about to turn into a fire.

I don't think EK every had any problems with mil pilots.

Maybe you were confusing it with the Japan 767 contracts? THey used to count mil time as 0. Now you just need 1000 civvy jet, and the rest of your mil time will count (fixed wing, anyway).

True, at EY you will earn around 15-20% more than EK as an F/O.

But at EK you will probably get to work 20-30% harder.

At EY you will probably get you Command in around 1/2 the time, than the EK F/O

It's a no brainer really.

I am thinking about to accept a job offer from EK. A buch of doubts storming in my brain, and not so much info, at least true info, to decide.
I have a question to guys living already in Dubai: how much you spend to live in Dubai? How much it cost the live, montlhly, for a family with two kids?

In my days with overtime and bonus and right hand seat, I enjoyed a nice lifestyle. 2 kids on school where fee is covered by EK allowance, maid in the house. Thing is I didn,t save much. Didn,t matter because was early command those days.

You gotta understand that to my knowledge there are only 2 or 3 schools in Dubai that are covered by EK allowance! (you will understand they have a big waitinglist).The rest of the schools is big time money out of your own pocket. Not even to mention Schoolbus fee, 8000 Dhs per child.

No more overtime and bonus. Time to command now somewhere in the 7 to 10 years bracket. So al depend on your age, if you gotta start saving now for your pension, then I have to disapoint you. Its not gonna hapen.

Not much use to through around money figures, this is the all around story.

If you are still in your twenties with a young family then you will be fine, doesn,t really hurt to wait another 8 years or so to postpone savings and enjoy a decent live style. Otherwise I would have a hard think about it!

With 3 kids and my FO salary it is tough:ugh: Will be even worse for me once they start deducting the money from my salary for exceeding the DEWA cap:{

Not saving anything at the moment, just treading water to stay afloat :{

Thank you Sand, appreciate your post and gave me a good picture of the history. If I did not missundertand you, when you mean no way to save money, you mean I can expect to spend the whole salary in Dxb, no way to send some money back home country to pay some bills, for instance.

I was totally wrong: I make some calculations and I figure out something like..... 2500 euros (3300 USD nowadays) to live there, of course, with EK school allowance and no paying bills for the house, power, water..... Is it the school the big hole? Then you even need a very good financial status to work for EK, isn't it?

You're either not living in Dubai or trying to wind things up. Judging by your join date, you're probably the latter.

Dhs 140,000 for a 4X4 is not extravagant. My car is certainly not the best in the street... and I only have ONE vehicle. You're such a cage rattler.

To the prospective new joiners, please do not assume it is cheap or easy to set up a home in Dubai. Everyone eventually gets settled but it will take some time to repay those personal loans (unless you come with lots of money). Almost every FO I spoke with agrees that the FO salary in EK is "just enough" to pay the bills and have a decent but not extravagant lifestyle. The real savings come when you upgrade.

Two factors have changed since T&C's at EK started to go downhill. Time to upgrade is no longer three years and inflation has eroded our purchasing power somewhat and will continue to do so without our annual step increases. Please take that into consideration with the possibility of living in long term temporary accomodation with your family, which is an entirely different can of worms discussed elsewhere in the forum. Villas are abundant in Dubai now but not many fit the asking price of EK.

I wish you all good luck and yes not everything here is 100% true but it is not 99% fabricated either. There are enough independant users posting stuff that your should definitely consider before making that commitment.

Ideally, you would want to make sure that "one in the oven" is delivered before you get here, because EK won't pay for the delivery. Likewise any other "pre-existing medical condition" you or your family might have on arrival.
Oh, and for goodness sake, no more "baking" for the first 6 months after you get here, because they won't pay for that either!
Otherwise, add a rather big number to "Fellowship of the drink's" comprehensive list.
