UAE Safe?

It often amuses me when people say the UAE is "safe". That is a matter of opinion and perspective. Many would beg to differ.

Sure you are unlikely to get killed in a drive by shooting, stabbed in the street, robbed at gunpoint in your home.

However a car accident that is not your fault could land you in jail. As could a legal prescription obtained overseas. The banks could have you in jail with a administrative error. A contractual agreement can be ignored costing thousands. Any number of idiot drivers could kill or maim your family. Raping by a local might land a girl in jail for illegal sex. As could an affair out of marriage. Date rape is common. Botched medical procedures have damaged hundreds. A number in EK. A hiccup with a visa can throw someone in the slammer even if the employer is at fault. Professionally you could be a convenient scapegoat when some other idiot is saving face.

Every day there are stories in the papers of gross injustices to everyday people while serious crimes by influentials are ridiculously excused or swept under a magic carpet.

The difference is that in a civilised country the law is on your side and reasonable protections and precautions will avoid most nasties. No so here. The system will lock you up at the drop of a hat without trial and no amount of diplomatic pressure can help. Trouble can find you in many ways.

The state can rob and plunder, rape and pillage and there is not a thing anyone can do. It happens daily and picking up any paper will show this.

Don't think the UAE is "safe". There are many who would argue against that statement.

Above the law

From the Financial Times:

Tony Buzbee, Mr Nabulsi’s lawyer, said the verdict was a farce: “We offered two hours of video showing many other people being tortured [by Sheikh Issa] on various days, but the UAE authorities were only interested in getting their treaty approved and ... continue to keep the royal family above the law.”

Its a worry.

CAVnotOK 14th Jan 2010 13:05

Tell them that you will fly for food, and not just happy to pay for your ticket to interview, but will also pay for your Type conversion, uniform, and accommodation.

You will also need to absolutely excel during the 4 day process.

Good luck, and remember every cloud has a silver lining...... no need to prepare.

Wizofoz 14th Jan 2010 14:54

Do-27,

No direct entries on the A380 at this stage, but never say never at EK.

@ Do-27

I applied 3 weeks ago and was shortlisted at first, then got an invitation 2 days ago. They are looking for F/O´s to fly B777 or A330 as written.

At the moment, I would be more then happy to fly for food, I guess flying for Emirates is way better then what I´ve been threw,.. flying for 2 1/2 months without getting my salary, !!! This is what sucks!!! So all u chicken crying out there:{...change the thread,
I`m looking for information about the selection days..any useful info´s??

greets

Give me your hungry, your tired.. your needy..

Desperation is a welcome trait... it makes people more appreciative of just about anything.. for a while...

Eagerly awaiting you here in pilot heaven....

Best of luck with your selection process!

u applied 3 weeks ago and got invited?

can someone tell why my 4500TT with 1400hrs on 777 , with application of 4 months ago not invited?

uh oh...

FlyingOW 15th Jan 2010 03:13

My guess is it's because he's a current captain (+2000hrs PIC airbus type) applying for an FO slot making his resume just a tad more competitive...........

Either that or his essay question on why he wanted to join EK was a cracker:ok:

Off the record, they are happy with applicants with over 2000 hrs wide body...+ other reqs. They are reluctant to take furloughed pilots as there is a risk of them returning to the original operator back to their old seniority.
So if applying "re-calculate" your logbook, and do not put the word "furloughed" anywhere in your CV. "FIRED" loks more desperate hence acceptable
