Same as most guys - Financial, career and to fly the shiny jet. However it doesn't normally take one long to realize that the move was a mistake. However that is something very few pilots out there will ever admit, hence why a lot of my fellow countrymen keep praising the likes of EK. Don't get me wrong, there are guys who are truly happy there - happy with all the bling bling and pretentious lifestyle. Each to their own, it's just not my kind of people I enjoy being around.
I have a lot of respect for the guys out there who have the balls to admit that maybe it actually is not as great as they imagined it would be and to then do something about their situation instead of trying to justify why they can't leave the place - golden handcuffs in a lot of instances as well.
With all the guys returning home they might wake up and see that the DXB dream has been dead a long time ago.

I can remember when EK was a great gig
when I started I did not matter what it is like to be in dubai because I came i worked and every now and then I left for at least 14 days to recharge
since all the BS, with you cannot have off days to your leave and most of the leave was not even granted, came across a lot of things changed as we have been locked into dxb and the schedules did the rest
EK, with the network (Not the airplanes- I said it before I don’t care of which tool I use) could have been one of the best jobs in the world, if not the best. And I think it is not wrong to say this has only been destroyed by managers who are not willing to think twice about their doing, and never want to see a different way of attacking a problem. Who focus the most on making things as difficult as possible, want to be intimidating, where they don’t have to, and need to treat employees as they do just to protect themself from the top - this is a management Desaster and nothing else

It's all relative. Recruiting requirements were reduced in 2006 as conditions had already eroded. The cost neutral pay cut in the early 2000s, ontop of changing requirements for command prior to that were the beginning of the end. Bus pilots with no progression while more junior 777 pilots were upgraded. Even this didn't stop people joining.
Everybody has a different story and feeling of being here. Two pilots joining on different fleets on the same day will have completely different career paths and feel different about the company. This has always been the case, and continues now as 1200 airbus pilots have been made redundant vs 150 Boeing pilots.
Offering right hand seat of a shiny new widebody to 2000hr Barbie jet pilots has meant EK has had a huge number of wide eyed pilots waiting to join. For them it's a great move, well it is to start with. Then they find the stuff that has been written here by all those old Boomers isn't as far from the truth as they once believed.
EK hasn't changed. They have never cared about your career or wellbeing. But the lack of communication, particularly with respect to the high number of very professional and high calibre employees that have been let go, is a very disappointing development.
To think that not being able to order uber eats when on a layover, is some of our colleagues greatest concerns now, would tend to indicate that once again, the “it's happening to someone else not me” attitude, which has been here for some time , will trump all. This attitude isn't a problem caused by EK. But it is a problem that those boomers don't seem to suffer from.

Circling back to what’s currently happening... What have EK done with regards unpaid/voluntary leave? I heard they were looking for volunteers. Is there a deadline for it? Any idea of the numbers they’re hoping to get?

The fact that unpaid leave is being offered (or forced if there aren't too many who volunteer) would indicate that perhaps more cuts are unlikely. But then, EK management have proven more than once that logic doesn't necessarily need to be followed.

I seriously hope that the cuts are finished. Everyone wants to draw a line under the past few months. Only time will tell I guess. I’m sure they’re trying to balance the fact that there’s still a reasonable amount of flying to be done, with the desire to cut costs further.

I don’t want a line to be drawn. I want people to remember how badly a seemingly good company can treat its employees. To remember that no matter how hard you work for them, and be under no illusion you work HARD for Emirates, or how senior you are in the company you are treated with distain.
Management wont even give you a passing word as to a reason that you were chosen and they have ruined your life. The number of experienced good professional pilots who were fired without any explanation is disgusting. The number of them who had had surgery in the past or cancer etc seems too great to be a coincidence.
It is disgusting to treat people this way.

Fully agreed. EK Mismanagement are vile. I believe the reason they don’t give a reason is
1. They could be sued in many countries for going after sick people.
2. When the mismanagement leave it will be very hard for them to get another job if they are not seen to totally stick to the company playbook.
3. Very hard to explain their behaviour to customers if it all leaks out.
Sadly, I predicted EK would have an India turn around accident. It did.
My next prediction will be a hull loss through poor training and a lack of FD experience.
None of my extended family have a will fly EK anymore. The treatment of former colleagues and the trajectory of FD experience sealed it for me.
