Guys, when you come for interview, remember that accommodation is a major problem at the moment.
You may be entitled to a villa, but just before you leave home, you get told that you will have to spend up to 6 months in a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment, only then will you get your proper allocation. A friend has 3 kids, now he is reconsidering whether or not to go to Dubai at all. Even I'm beginning to wonder about the wisdom of my move. If EK can't even keep up their side of the contract with regard to housing, where else are they going to cut into your entitlement to cover up someone's ineptitude?

Hey guys..wwwwaaayyyyyy back in the thread there were 3 books people listed 1) Preparing for your Emirates interview 2) Handling the Big Jets 3) How to Ace your Technical Interview. Are those still good reading? I have a loooong flight from JFK to DXB for my interview and I think those 3 books can keep me busy for the flight. Suggestions? Thanks!

"Handling..." is not necessary at all, unless you plan to interview at CX afterwards.
"How to ace..." might be ok read, but not really necessary. The compass test has a short technical questionnaire on a basic ATP Level, but that book is a bit of an overkill.
I would recommend to rest on the flight, you really don't have much time to relax once you get to DXB (Remember, you get a bunch of paperwork to fill out at the hotel and the show time is very early the next morning). Maybe you should go through the sim profile a couple of time.
Just be relaxed and be yourself and you'll do fine.

Hey everyone,
Well, EK have been checking out my referees and all seems to be going along nicely.
FL XXX- your welcome for the info, i dont see the point in holding all this info back for guys who need it. I understand that EK is a big stepping stone for some of us in the airline industry and the more help we can get the better!!!
As for my opinion on EK, after spending a few days in Dubai and getting the chance to speak to a couple of the pilots, it seems that the problems that most airlines are having at the moment are happening in EK. YOu see alot of negatives in the threads on Pprune, but you cant always take those as being gospel. I think you really need to go and have a look at Dubai and EK, do some research on the arab and islamic culture/religion and then have a good think about it. The pay/package i dont think is as good as they want us to believe that it is, i think they can and will have to increase the salary, they have a disaster looming in the accomodation side of things as well, we were told that it would be at least 6months in temp accom. so thats going to be a huge setback for guys with families, i am waiting for May when the normal pay increases and profit sharing are announced, and if they up there salary then i will seriously consider heading over. However, thats just my opinion.
As to Leardudes question, the only book i read was Ace the tech. book and i found that it helped me as i hadnt really looked at any of the tech stuff for more than 10years. Certainly the only use it had was for the 30 questions in the tech part of the compass test, but it still helped me feel confident and i think thats important, nothing like coming out of a tech interview feeling like your the dumbest guy on the planet!!! And i think its great advice to get the rest as well, the days start very early, usually around 0615 for the hotel bus pickup and some days you wont be back in your room till 1730..

Great info on the EK Selection Program.
I have a interview coming on April and I'm not comfortable with 2 things:
They are asking for two referees from the my current company management and for my logbooks to be stamped by the company.
It happens that my company would only stamp it if I'm dismissed (or ask to be) and if this kind of referees were contacted I would certainly loose my job (yes, there are places worse than EK regarding management).
I'm trying to get the logbooks certified by the government authorities, but as the amount that I had flown with this company is not significative on my career (1000 hs to 16000 hs), my biggest problem would be the referees contact.
My question is: Does someone know what type of questions are asked ins this referee contact? Does the contact only happen if EK will offer you the job?

Also, what about the actual sim. What airport is the sim assessment done at? In addition, what is the profile (approaches, etc)? Can anyone add to this?

Sim Assessment
The sim assessment is in DXB, first you do a visual pattern of off 12L with A/T, A/P and F/D switched off. Then you do a low vis T/O off of 12L with a V1 cut. Clean up, run the checklists and then you proceed to Sharja VOR. They give you the A/P after you've cleaned up and are level at 3000ft. Direct Sharja VOR and then intercept a radial and track outbound. After that you get Vectors to the ILS 12L. Once you're getting close to the localizer the A/P comes off and you shoot a single engine ILS. At DH you miss and that's it. If that has changed, then someone please correct me.

As for the referees, I would be upfront with them. They understand that some employers can be real jerks.
I understand that the referees are being contacted if they're reasonably sure to hire you, although it is not a guarantee.

Interview April 14-16
In Dubai soon for the interview. Anyone else with these dates? I'm looking forward to checking everything out. My wife will join me via ZED fare, HOU or New York loads depending. I have yet to see my details on flights, etc. I just know I'm staying at The Majestic.
Has anybody booked extra nights at The Majestic. Wondering if you can do better than internet rates, or if they give airline rates? If I don't hear back, guess pretty easy to e-mail them directly!!

One more question?
Does Emirates care about letters of recommendation? I have one but have been too busy to collect others. Probably should have done this months ago, but what has been the overall sentiment they have shared over the presentation of such a letter at the interview?

I reckon that your chances of getting a discount at the Majestic arent that great, they are always over booked, as are nearly every single hotel in dubai, occupency is at around 99% so if you dont want to pay there price they will just find someone else!!!

You need to have 3 references that are willing to be contacted on your behalf. They want 2 from your current employer, and 1 from a previous employer. All they want is a name, position, e-mail, and phone #.
They sent out an "errored" e-mail to my references, then e-mailed me and said they were having trouble contacting them. I contacted the ref, they replied with my recommendation, one even asked for a reply, and received it.
