Who's complaining who? Not me. Just a couple of days ago, RAK put an ad in their career website for the 757 positions with "special preference for Indian and Filipino pilots." This caused a furor among a few non-TCN aspirants who discriminately alluded to such nationalities as being cheap labor, and therefore started a professional exchange of views about racism and discrimination.

So RAK finally got their facts right!

I believe that one's personal circumstances should never be considered as the basis for determining an individual's payscale. Everybody deserves to get the same pay for the same job that they do regardless of his/her nationality. If that is not discrimination, then I don't know how else you would describe it. Certainly it's not economics...
Semantics, Expatula! If you had a Souk shop here in DXB or elsewhere in the Gulf employing low paid staff, you would look at the AEDs the same way those guys do otherwise you would be out of business soon after the start. Do I concur with this misery? NO! But I had the learn the ropes too. What is right is one thing and what they they end up doing is a different one.
mustangV8 says that he hopes China and India develop strongly in order to keep inddors their workforce. The problem is that there are many other parts of the world still in the 5th world status or below where the whole economy is a stalemate. It's a sad globalisation at a different scale.

'MustangV8 you really think the spending power of 100USD here in the UAE is the deciding factor on whether or not someone comes from their home country. You are way off the mark if you do.'

Thats not what I think! The 'USD 100' example is insignificant...

AirNoServicesAustralia...So your point is that these discrepancies in salary here is valid mainly based on the spending power of a certain currency back 'home' AND how much money the poor expats send to their loved ones 1000's of miles away!!!!!!! PLEASE.
Hey, it maybe so, BUT why are you trying to validate it? The compensation system doesn't make sense and it is wrong.

'None of us can ever get citizenship here and bottom line is we are all here to save a nest egg for our future (you're crazy if you're not). '

I agree with the citizenship issue but c'mon, man, saving a nest egg, while working and living in the GCC??????? I MUST be missing something!!
I bet there are a bunch o' EK pilots who feel a little differently than you.

Take it easy

I have never said the difference in pay for different nationalities is right, and all along I have said it is discriminatory. What I was having issue with was your line of argument in relation to the difference in someones home country of the value of the money they are paid here. If you are not saving a nest egg here in the UAE what the hell are you doing here, I mean come on, who would choose to live in Dubai and put up with the traffic/building chaos if it wasn't for financial reasons. So I will say again the vast majority of people are here to save for the future back at home so what their salary is worth back home is the number one consideration for a new hire. The first thing everyone does is convert the salary on offer back into their home currency and then compares it to their take home pay at home and compare their bottom line and in a large way this decides if they will come here.

I'll say again just so you don't miss it, I don't think the system of paying different salaries for different nationalities is fair or right, but it is a fact of life in the Middle East. Also I will say again for your benefit, the 100 USD example is extremely pertinent, because the bottom line to all this is, the value of a dollar is not the same for everybody. Whereas in Australia you need to save at least $300,000 USD to own a decent home in a major city in Australia (minimum), you will get yourself a palace in a lot of Asian countries for a tenth of that. Yes while you are in the UAE your cost of living will be the same no matter your nationality, but (and listen carefully because this a big but), if after spending that same amount of money, the Australian will have $100 USD left to save he will not take the job, whereas maybe for a Sri Lankan, or a Pakistani, that $100 USD savings will be enough to make the move worthwhile.

This is going to be my last attempt to explain this concept, as it doesn't seem to sink in.

AirNo...

Please don't feel you have to explain this to me. Ive lived here collectively over 20 years (I have a feeling that is longer than you). As for the 'sinking-in' part you mention, that happened coincidently about 20 years ago, eventhough I was very young.

I am aware of all your points, but did u read this from my previous post:

Apart from qualified flight crew and other highly technical professions, this 'reality' is the potential employees' doing...they accept the abuse, no?? They don't contest the T&C's offered to them and so it becomes practice. Furthermore, as there is n't any regulating authority for this matter, who cares?

...I dont know what the hell the argument is! BUT, I do not agree that this place is a savings' paradise...not anymore. Furthermore, as a suggestion, I think you should update your gen. knowl. on costs of real estate/rentals/leasing in Asian countries (without comparing it to the 1st of the 1st world). Esp. rentals: Mumbai is not too far behind Tokyo

Guys, you are deviating from the main theme of the forum! What about RAK Airways B-757? Did RAK Air start his operation? And how company plans to have regular flights with one 757 and one 737?

Re "cheap labour pilots in RAK":
This would perfectly match the rumour that Mr. Moritz Suter, ex CEO of swiss regional CROSSAIR is financially involved in RAK Air. Moritz Suter was the pioneer in ultra low cost regional operations in Europe. Everybody hated him, especially pilots. He would pay low wages and make you work like a dog. At the point where he could not find pilots anymore he started recruiting in former Sowjet ...ending up with 3 total hull losses during his time.
Again, it is only a rumour but worth checking..
PS: His dummy Andre Dose sitting in BAH..watch out!

Just before heading for work. The source is the Gulf News.
Ras Al Khaimah: RAK Airways has received its air operating certificate from the GCAA and is ready to launch on March 15.
Jack Romero, CIO of RAK Airways, said, "Once traffic rights to India and Iran are secured, the airline is totally ready to launch.
"The reservation system [Aires] will be tested live next week" he said, adding that the pilots and cabin crew are ready after they were trained by Lufthansa.
He said a generous baggage allowance - up to 45kg on selected routes - will be introduced.
Efficient booking facilities will also be available along with call centres for customer service.
"RAK Airlines will have many booking systems (multi channels) including the internet, local travel agents, travel centres, SMS, and kiosks at the airport," he said.
Romero said once started, there will be two aircraft which will have two passenger classes: business and economy and the passengers will be served free food and drinks.
The fleet will expand by two aircraft per year.
"The first year will target Iran and India. The second year will target Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The third year will target Russia, the CIS, Levant and North and East Africa," he said.

fractional,

adding that the pilots and cabin crew are ready after they were trained by Lufthansa.
The aviation industry is small and transparent, and managers should select their words a litle bit better when talking to the media. If this is what the CEO told Gulf News, he is not telling exactly the state of his pilots, according to the rumours network.

What he should have said is: "the pilots will be ready after they have been trained by Lufthansa on the B757. As for the cabin crews, we have not decided were we are going to train them".

Sounds different, does it not? But tomorrow is another day.

What does it mean "after they have been trained by Lufthansa"? BA training is not acceptable or direct entry for current 757 captains excluled?

Hi Pull Hard,

These are not rumors ou are discribing, but hard facts. Moritz Suter was CEO of Crossair and hard 3 hull losses, 2 with dead people, and Andre Dose was Head of flight ops at that time.
They are still both under prosecution in Switzerland for those event...

Quite scary, and here they are both involved again in airline business

A757,

It means, according to the rumours network , that the pilots they have hired who do not have a 75 rating will be trained by LH. They have a few 73 flyers that have been earning their salaries doing all kinds of other work for months. I guess they are honored with a 757 course

Direct entry, or BA trained pilots? I am afraid somebody else has to help you with that one.

Whatever the feeling and opinions about Suter - I cannot believe he has invested in a company that needs over a year to get the AOC back on track and hires a good number of cabin staff more than half a year before they are close to launch their first flight. Not knowing much about Mr. Suter, but vasting money is surely not, and does not fit his profile I am just asking.

Crew training

I was talking to someone there and you don't need to worry about any more pronouncements from the CEO who announced all that stuff about flying in March to the press. He was gone same day. Pilots are in BWN being trained the cabin crew are not yet. AOC has apparently been issued but no indication of traffic rights. The only thing most people have heard is that Suter is on the board - the money was raised a while ago now so doubt he is involved in that way. No one knows who new CEO is.

Another one bites the dust!

Yeah it true! just checked the website and indeed the CEO's picture has been removed! So what did he do to get the boot? Surely a couple of words wrong in a newspaper wouldnt have gotten him kicked out, more a slap on the hand for that kind of thing.

Sorry to say but this region is becoming so unstable, nobodys job seems secure Lets see what next for the boys and gi...... sorry boys at RAK.

speedsalive,

As long as your FAA license is accepted by the UAE GCAA. and you are otherwise a nice guy, I cannot see any reason why they should not hire you.
