Alex, while saving fallen women is a fine hobby for a gentleman of the ex-RAF Officer corps, it has many pitfalls - most of which I've encountered. Ahem. Model railways is a far safer hobby - and a lot less expensive!

BEags, I for one do appreciate your continued help for our Wannabes, but, like Alex, I have to wonder where you find the time to keep up with all this stuff!

Ice,

you have a number of options, but your best best at the moment may be direct entry pilot (DEP) with BA. They have reduced their entry requirements to the point where I think you may well be in with a chance. Other alternatives may include the type rating scheme with easyJet, which will cost you a good few quid.

Your RAF (I assume?) training is generally held in high regard, but unless you have time on transport aircraft you are largely in the same position as a low-hour fATPL from the civilian training arena - in fact, with your hours, I presume you are an fATPL yourself? I assume you are not a QFI or QWI, and thus are unable to try for things like BAe contracts overseas?

A little more information about your qualifications and aspirations may help me to give you some more precisely aimed advice.

Do you have the right to live and work in the EU? Is your licence CAA or JAA? Exactly what types did you fly operationally, and for how many hours? And, lastly, what are you hoping to do, exactly?

Hi inverted

you r right that i am lucky so far.its wonderful experience being in air force and if u want to fly there then u should. its not easy to get in there but not impossible.if u have it in u then u will get in as they know who is the right stuff.

life is tough but u cannot get everything free. flying fast jets will be worth an experience that has no match.

thanx

help please: military crossover

Hi there fellow prooners,
Wondering if you would pass your thoughts on to me. Ive got 1200 hours military (850 fast jet, 60 rotary, remainder piston and TP). Im having serious thoughts about leaving and doing my exams and going to the airlines. A silly move? Or a realistic prospect.

Ta.

Well you wouldn't be the first. Definitely a realistic prospect, especially with the amount of recruiting that's happening at the moment

We even took a navigator on in the right seat lately!!

WeaselRN, Are you eligible for the BA scheme? IE they take you straight from the forces based on your annual reports and an interview/sim check?
If not Virgin would be a realistic prospect, PM me and I'll put you in touch with a couple of people with more recent experience/advice.....regards

There are several thousand ex-service pilots flying for the airlines, so it can hardly be seen as an unrealistic prospect. However, Virgin would not be any kind of a prospect with those hours, but British Airways might. I'm not sure if they still run the transition scheme for military pilots; try your Station Education Centre for more information, or contact BA directly.

There is a great deal of information about the BA Direct Entry Pilot DEP scheme in Terms and Endearments: see here among others. T&E is really where you should be concentrating your efforts; you do not fit the profile of a 'wannabe' as defined by Pprune - see the sticky post at the top of this forum.

Question Need assistance

hi guys

i am somehow stuck in making a decision and need a little help from you guys here..
i recently got retired from pakistan air force and have moved to UK for permanent settlement. The broad outline of my flying experience is as follows:-

Fighters (Mig-15, Mig-19, A-5III) 200 hours

Trainers (MFI-17, T-37) 800 hours

Dassault Falcon DA-20 F 1700 hours

Grand Total 2700 hours

i want to pursue flying carrier in UK but the problem is that i am not sure that where to start from. i dont hold any PPL or CPL qualification right now.. i intend to do CPL from bristol or oxford flight school, but do i need to get PPL first for that or i can directly go for the CPL?
if i have to do PPL. then in that case do i have to do complete PPL wid 45 hours or is there any examption in my case as i already have 2700 hours??
i hope you guys will take some time out and help me in making my mind up and assist me that where i should take the start from...

thanx

http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/LASORS_06_WEB.pdf

That is a near 12mb file. It is the document that outlines all the flight crew licensing rules for the UK CAA. You need to read it and then call them.

One area I would particularly check is that you can get the necessary security check completed for an airside pass. A background with the Pakistan Military might be seen as a bit special.

Good luck,

Flying fixed wing airliners after military chopper flying

Hi all. I am off into the Army on the 8th of Jan to start my basic training. My main aim in the army is to become a chopper pilot, hopefully the apache.

I was just wanting to know how and if you could convert your licence from chopper to fixed wing (atpl) to be able to fly airliners. Also do all chopper hours count towards fixked wing hours?

If anyone could help me out that would be very much appreciated and it would also be good to hear of anyone who has taken this path and no have a successful job with an airline.

Thank you very much in anticipation

As a military pilot, you will not have a licence of any kind, therefore you will not go through a conversion procedure. You will have to gain your CPL just like any other wannabe, though your hours will count to some degree. Should you accrue sufficient service time and flying hours, you may qualify for exemptions in that procedure - but it will take many years to get to that position.

While there's no harm in considering your life after the military, the Services aren't too keen on their new recruits already planning their exit from military life. You will have plenty of time - and advice - available within the Army at the appropriate time to assess your options for when your time is up.

P.S. Luckily for you, I didn't move this post to the Military Aircrew forum; you'd have been eaten alive!

Transition to a European Way of Life

Greetings to the forum!! I'm a soon to be ex-USAF F-15 driver who is contemplating a move to Denmark. I'm very interested in anyone who may have been in my shoes and could offer any advice on a smooth transition. I realize that obtaining a JAA license will be a major undertaking...are there any shortcuts around this? Are there members of this esteemed forum who live in Europe but commute to the US and work? Lastly, has anyone heard of Star Air out of CPH and are they hiring currently?? Thanks for any inputs!!!

Brand new start in UK...does life start at 35?

Hi,
I am a new member. I have about 16 years of flying ( about 3500 hrs) ex- military (in India). I have an ICAO ATPL endorsed on P-68 (Its a ME) and current IR. I want to relocate to the UK, while i still have the time to start on a new career. I am 35 now. I have permission to work here in UK. I was a Qualified Flying Instructor in the military and have about 8 years of instructional experience.

I would like to know some very basic stuff:-...yes i went thru the LASORS but kept going round in circles...(loops)!

(a) I want to relocate to the UK and am keen for a JAA/ATP licence and placement in an airline. In the meanwhile, i want to utilise this time and pick up something to do while i clear all the ground tests/ skill test etc. How much time does it take to do it?

(b) Whats the route to becoming a Flying Instructor in a local club in the UK for me? Do i have to do the entire 14 JAA exams for it? and then the FI? Do i get any credits for my ICAO licence and past experience/QFI status? And worse of all....and most importantly....how much does it cost me (approx)?

(c) Aviation in India is big right now and a lot of European pilots are looking for jobs in India. The money is better than most of other places in the world with many start up airlines. A couple of my friends think i am going against the current...and i may be...but due to family constaints, i need to do this.

Would be grateful for some genuine advice. Thanks.
