Post Virgin/Qantas Recruiting ex-Ansett??????

Hello all.Have some anecdotal regarding Virgin.Evidently most of AN cabincrew are missing out, reiving a letter saying they haven`t met Virgin Blues` criteria. This is fine and in some cases understandable but one ex-AN girl`s letter was dated two days prior to the interviews! In this circumstance Virgin is backpeddling,I imagine in fear of discrimination etc....
Do pruners think Dixon/Godfrey statements of taking on so many ex AN staff are just public & political stunts.Virgin seems to be very image conscious regarding the media where I think Qantas is more concerned of the political playing field. However, both are on record as saying they would take on 500-1000 in Virgins case & upto 6000 in the Qantas scenario.
I for one would be appreciative of being given an oppurtunity of going through a selection process but to receive a thanks but no thanks letter dated a few days prior to the interview would be crushing.

....or possibly just a typo on a standardised "no thanks" letter.

I am not surprised at the Virgin stance re cabin crew. I do not know of any AN cabin crew who fit the Virgin profile (no pun intended), besides award provisions at Virgin compared to AN would be a bitter pill fot the AN cabin crew to swallow and create problems for Virgin.

Question

I'm finding this increasingly difficult to understand...

Are you people saying that just because you worked for AN that the other airlines should automatically hire you, regardless of whether you make the grade?

You've got to be joking!!!

My experience with VB goes like this.

I applied online at the VB website on 14 Sep.
I rang them on 24 Sep just to see what the process and timeframe was going to be.

The answer:
"Oh we won't be looking at any of the web applications for at least 6 weeks!"

Whether they are just paying lipservice to the out of work ex AN staff I don't know. Is it just for creating a 'public image' of the good guy, again I don't know.

I do however suspect that a delay/wait of 6 weeks suggests a poorly managed business to me.

Sorry for posting the truth about my experience on a rumour network but it may help others who receive the same treatment realise that it's not them with the problem.

I'm not holding my breath for any response.

Good day Hugh Jarse
not once in my post did I command a position in your airline for myself or my colleagues.I said I would be appreciative of an opportunity of the interview process. Many AN crew would not have aspirations to fly with QF/VB but those that do and those that pass the rigours of the selection process, would very professionally integrate into your system and your flight deck, whether sitting beside or behind you.
It was your CEOs that publically stated they were willing to take on large numbers of AN staff. My fear was that was a political stunt to mittigate the public perceptions of corporate sharks in the aviation industry and hence have our hopes of working in the Australian airlines dashed. The ex-AN guys that get through to your flight deck will be professional and likely to be easy and enjoyable to work with.
In terms of `making the grade` I think the following should be remembered.I know many blokes who missed out on AN interviews but were successful with QF/VB,blokes who missed out on CX but were successful with Qantas. Now there are ex-AN who will no doubt miss out on QF/VB through the interview process.Lets face it,like a sim or flight on the line, anyone can have a bad day.
Don`t take this the wrong way HJ but by the sounds of your psuedonym you have been sitting in that left hand seat a long time. How do you think you would go `making the grade` in another airline? For some,me included,it brings back the anxiety of many years ago in GA wondering the same.
Finally,I think like many friends in QF/VB, you would be great to work with.

To all of those ex-AN F/O's hanging out at the Hamo last Friday night, you might be getting free beer for an hour (just how DID you get those arm bands, anyway ?) but if you're looking to catch the ear of one of the bosses, you're hanging out at the wrong pub - try moving about a mile up river next Friday and you may just find that elusive contact that you seem to be looking for.

As far as I know about 10 ex AN staff started with QF at MEL airport in Customer Service roles which for the time being will be minor. I have also heard that a number are starting or have started on the Ramp in MEL.

Cool

For information, VB have taken on some engineers and tech crew. Their offer to take on 500 Ansett staff, Pilots, Cabin Crew etc all revolved around them operating 10 Ansett 737's. The first Administrator was working on this idea but the new one soon put a stop to it. Now you know who to thank. Just because you haven't got an interview within 30 seconds of sending it in doesn't mean you won't get one. On the other hand just because you have 10 years experience with someone else, doesn't mean you will be get an interview. As you may have realised, VB has a very different philosophy. A lot of VB staff do not fit the AN & QF mould, but are exectly what VB were looking for.

RES RES RES.......you've forgotten about Reservations.

QF reservations have taken on large amounts of AN staff around the network to help cope with the demand - they are on a 6 week contract which expires 19 oct. Just last night I was supervising another 30 AN staff who took to the phones selling the QF product.

Virgin Blue is hiring ex-Ansett cabin crew. It may not be mainline cabin crew but they are interviewing cabin crew from Kendells, and as we all know Ansett owned Kendells so therefore in a way they are recruiting ex-Ansett. The same is happening at Easterns, who are owned by Qantas, they to are interviewing Kendell cabin crew.
So Dixon/Godfrey statements are correct.

Rubber chicken,
reference VB what is this mould.Everyone aware of the characteristics of stereotyped long haul QF,former AA short haul,AN etc.Is VB relaxed, party type atmosphere singing over the PA etc...
Hoping there are no spiteful/jealous/fearful or insecure comments from others,I am honestly interested.
For those that feel the need to make any of the less amicable comments often seen throughout these forums,be fair and let all know your airline origins.

Gee wiz King George you really knocked cabinboy for "six" with that reply mate...geesh...I like the joke about boy/girl - and then to top it off a cheap stab at Qantas obviously from the perspective of someone who knows nothing about how airlines work.

Get a life you W*nker

Will AN pilots adapt well into Virgin Blue's operating environment? I doubt this. How are senior AN pilots going to fit in as junior F/Os, flying with captains who they readily despised as low cost=low quality operators until upto a couple of weeks ago? I would not want it. Better to have young, keen f/os from GA, who readily embrace the concept of low cost as the future of successful aviation travel. Its working in the UK, although anyone who has tried to purchase a low fare are quite often disappointed.

People who lose jobs are generally bitter, and want retribution. Is this the makings of a relaxed pilot, being able to concentrate 100% on the job in hand? I think not. Make no mistake about it, most the ex-disputers working in Europe/Asia are still fighting the ghosts all these years later.

King G V,

What's with the cabinboy/girl thing?? Was that a vague attempt to be funny??? Well?

As for QF hiring AN people, this is true at Sydney Airport...have seen many of my AN mates working temp CSO jobs with their QF counterparts...seems to be working well, especially since the flights are chockers (well, my ones are!!)

Oh, and by the way King G, I second Sonique on that one - if you knew how airlines operated (in the commercial sense of the word), you'd understand the how's and why's QF and VB charge the fares they do. All the cheap seats have been sold out - all that's left are the expensive, refundable ones...get it?? Supply and demand my friend - been that way for many years, and not likely to change (yes, VB have similar fares too - not as expensive, but then who else flies to PER right now???)

Besides, you have to turn a profit somehow - QF have been charging those fares JUST LIKE ANSETT DID for yeeeeeeears!! Nothings changed, except now the red rat is loaded up out of every single port and there's nothing left but the full economy seats...what, you expect them to drop their fares?? How the hell do you turn a profit on $289 to PER?? Imagine if everyone on a 763 service to PER ex SYD bought a fare at that price??? PROFIT?? WHERE???

You'll notice that not many - if any at all - QF shareholders complain about fares - because it's these fares that turn the annual dividend...chi-ching, thank you very much!!!

And that's me off my soapbox till the next debate!

Engage left autopilot,
my sincere apologies, integrate poor choice of words & poor CRM.To prevent misunderstanding what I meant was an ex-AN crewmember who gets through your interview & training process will very unlikely be an upstart, overbearing, overiding & not fitting into your culture. They should be quite good to crew with, have drunk with many of your colleagues on o/n and as with all the percentages of life,in most cases great people.NASA shuttle pilot starts at the bottom of your pile as I understand, not a bad prospect after coming from a system were promotion was never understood. No offence to AN CRJ promotion critera, whatever it was-or matters now.

The Prisoner
many AN pilots wouldn`t fit into VB for a variety of reasons but many would. There are some exceptional blokes out there and no doubt your bosses will sort them out & pick them up.People adapt-fighter pilots become s/o`s,as do cropdusters, regional pilots and the pilots stuck out bush-what is the difference from an ex-AN pilot with the appropriate attitude?
I must admit though,if I were a VB f/o and they were taking direct entry Capt I would have your sentiments. Please don`t jump down my throat, the last scenario may not be credible,I`m am a pilot too and can empathise with those fears.

Take 2

Bulldog69, I apologise for being insensitive in my original post.

However, it's my belief is that there should be no special treatment of AN pilots applying for QF/VB. Just like all those who were successful and now work there, and those who are yet to get their first taste of working for a major airline, the AN pilots should be treated exactly the same.

In regard to pilots missing out on various airlines only to be successful in another doesn't make them any less of a pilot. There could be a wide range of reasons as to why they missed out. Having a bad day is just one of them. My experience has shown it to be usually something more substantial.

All airlines think that THEY have the best recruiting system in comparison to the rest. I think that's very subjective. Don't you agree?

Good luck to all.

Hugh Jarse
thanks for the reply-I agree with you,AN pilots shouldn`t get any special treatment. My original post was as to whether the statements on the QF website were just political rhetoric ie:AN recruitment preference.
I know how the kids in the bush will be feeling, having their hearts set on QF/VB/AN.
We all know, remember the dispute, experienced pilots coming into GA & foreign pilots into the airlines, hoping for a job in Compass, actually hoping for a job in any airline.
Good luck to all with airline aspirations, times will be tough for a little while. The yanks have been Pearl Harboured again;naive but they will bomb than spend their way into prosperity........airline expansions again,I hope.
