Angel Emirates Flight Attendant

Hi all,

I'm due to fly to Dubai in April after medical tests are cleared.. I still have uncertainties about the job and being based in Dubai.. Would greatly appreciate it if anyone could answer these questions:

1. What's the company culture like in Emirates? (Any bullying/"politics")

2. Are there equal opportunites to fly short/long-haul/international flights? When do you get the chance to fly business/first class?

3. Can we get subsidised travel tickets for our family members to visit us in Dubai during the 6 months probation? Where can they stay? Was just wondering if it's possible to put a family member up for a few nights at the apartment.

Thanks!

Only the purser will get to experience Business class as a passenger. If you want to experience anything above that, you'll need to be senior management or a Captain. Or you could always pay full fare..........

Hi there,

here are the As to your Qs,

1) Politics in flying? Well there isn't really any politics as in Seniority is concern. But just pay more respect to your Seniors and Pursers. They are fully in charge of the aircraft and you. So they are answerable to your actions. It is unlike any Asian airlines. I know so as I use to work for an Asian airline. And must say, EK is so so more relaxed.

2) You bid for your flights. But then again, it does not confirm that you'll get it. Your seniority is rotational and you will get your flights when you are almost on top bid. And usually a mixed of short and long haul. You get unlimited travel benefits with EK in YCL when you join. After six month, you also get travel benefits with other airlines. List of airlines is endless. Its very good. Only Pursers get Business Class on EK. So work towards it and you'll experience the privilege soon enough.

3) Parents and sibling will not get travel benefits until you get your probation over, which is 6 month. One of each type of concession ticket. Parents also get with other airlines. Siblings too but not as many as parents list of other airlines. All concesssional travel only after you finish your probation, or one year of service and some even 2. So it depends. They can however stay in your apartment but limited to two persons and your other flatmate must sign an agreement form to allow them to stay with you.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hi ekkru,

A big thank you for answering all my questions! I'm so relieved to learn that politics is not prevalent compared to Asian airlines. I got freaked out when i heard of bullying stories and scandals in a local airline.

Btw, what is YCL? Are you from Asia too and how long have you been flying with Emirates? Would like to correspond with you, if you don't find me a hassle! My msn is [email protected]

Some more questions popping out of my mind are:

1. What's the general profile of Emirates' customer base? Heard it's a group not easy to handle..
2. During our 6 months probation and as juniors, what are the typical routes we would fly? Would it be mainly around the Middle Eastern countries?
3. I was also told that EK's flying times are usually odd hours like midnight, so it's like working through the wee hours on flight?
4. Can you share with me your experience, like, what's the best and worst part of working as a cabin crew? Is the traveling really good?
5. How do you like Dubai so far? I've gathered much divided opinions. Some say it's happening but others say it's a boring place. But i'm definitely anticipating loneliness in a foreign land...

Thanks again

A question about the staff travel for family, and possibly friends. I know that very close / best friends would love to visit you in Dubai so would it be possible to put a couple of friends on your travel benefits? If you don't have any siblings can you substitute them for the close friends that you want to put on?

Hi Geminian,About your queries, here we go......

1) Pax profile on Emirates are mostly from the South Asia. Although i must say, they are tough to handle. You will learn to handle them and if you've tried your best, they are usually understanding. And they'll write a comment form. End of story.Just so long as you've tried, its ok.

2) You start flying international right away. So you might get a mix of regional and international destinations.Fair and good mix. So you'll be fine and hopefully lucky enough.

3) Yes it was the case when i first started flying.Flights depart at wee hours in the morning ie 3am. But I've learn to get use to it.

4) The best part about doing this job is the travel. Although layover may be short, you still have time to explore the city if you make an effort. So its boils down to you. Best part is also making a pax day on the flight. When they appreciate your efforts and show it. Makes my day too.Worst thing, JETLAG. Hate it but coping with it I guess.

5) Dubai is an ok place. Its what you make of it. You get the privilege of getting out from Dubai once in while which it great. But while in Dubai, built friendships and maintain it to have a better life and but a social circle to feel less lonely. I've got 5 friends who i treasure and keep in touch at all times. So they are my base in Dubai and so am I to them. So socialise and make friends. Loneliness is how you feel if you don't make an effort to socialise, you'll only feel worse. Dubai can be superficial and take the goodness out of someone, so don't let it get to you!!

YCL is Economy Class.... I am from Asia. Originally from Singapore. Think its where you are from too. And been flying for Emirates for about 4 half years.Speak to you soon on MSN.Cheers

Hi Sebby

Hope you're well! Yup it's just the Dxb-Mel-Akl that lays over in Akl (for around 27hrs). The only other EK flight that lays over in NZ is Dxb-Syd-Chc which lays over in Chc for around 24 hours. Can be hard to get back to NZ... Having said that, so far I have managed to get home once a month since I have been here! Even if you're not rostered a Mel-Akl flight, it is possible to 'swap' trips with other crew of the same grade.

Oh thanks for that. I knew about CHC, and have a couple of friends who are in DXB that have managed to get over here a bit too.

Just looking at giving emirates a go at the moment, moved here from aus from a great flying job to a very average one and regretting every minute of it and now know it will be hard to get back to aus so goning to give this a go.

Happy Flying!

Travel benefits with EK are strictly for staff and their immediate family members - spouses, children, parents, siblings, and in-laws. I know of crew who find it hard to even get their stap dad/mum onto the staff rate. You can't substitute friend or boy/girlfriends as ticket holders, sadly.

Question Ms Hostess: about the reach test!

Hi! as the title says, its all about the reach test!
My story is pretty similar to yours. Though when I went for the interview, they asked all candidates to touch the bar with both hands, which in my case was next to impossible! although i managed to stretcccccccccch n touch it with one hand.. but it wasn't acceptable. anyway, i couldn't clear the first round back then.
Yesterday I got to know that Ek's on with the crew-hunt again!
I wanna give it a shot but am scared of the reach-test embarrasement!
was wondering if u could tell me whether they're all "typical" about it, who'd make us do it with both hands or will one arm stretch do just fine

Hey BrisbaneEK,
I'm ex EK crew, I was recruited four years ago so not sure if things have changed but in answer to ur question I was contacted via email advising that i was successful. No news is definately good news in regards to the EK recruitment process, they're usually quite prompt in their response to unsuccessful applicants!! Not sure what the intellect test is about, must be something new, strange?? Good luck... it'll be an amazing experience

Hi Guys

First time one here
Im due to fly on th 18th of may, v excited but also bit nervous about the whole training thing.

Can someone advise me what things i should expect at the training, as i have never worked for an airline before.

Also do they provide working shoes or should i buy one before i fly there?

I also want to know on behalf of some people that was in my group... its now been 8 weeks and they still have not yet received any call to even do a medical.... does that mean they are not through? or is this normal?

V sad for them as there were only a few of us left and thought everyone will make it through and put us all on the same flight.

Can someone tell me if i need to bring cash with me when i get there.

I was advise that the accomodation is fully furnish, can someone advise me what appliances that are included.

Thanks guys

Hi md13,
I have been cc with ek for over 6 years now and still enjoy it! To answere some of your questions. The training is 6 weeks and it incorporates 2 weeks of safety and emergency training, 1 week of first aid and 2 weeks of service. The first week is what they call induction week. Basically filling in lots of forms, medical, a tour around and a chat with the Locals about the place. Uniform and shoes etc are supplied free of charge so no panic there. The trainers are great and they do take it very seriously but also try to make it fun. As for furnished apt, it has most things. Nothing major for you to buy. You might get put in with a new person like you or someone who has been here a while. If the latter is the case they might have got everything already like toaster, kettle, tv and dvd etc...
As for cash... Bring as much as you can as like most of us when we got here had to buy bits and peices and while the company give you cash when you arrive you have to pay it back! Also we got taken in by the great shopping!!
As for your friend that has not heard back yet... No news is good news...

I hope you find this info good and if you need any more let me know!

See you on line soon!
