For an even broader picture, make sure you all read Evita's other very informative post on life in Dubai, which can be found on this thread here.

You should be aware of a lot more than just whereabouts you might live before you get to Dubai. And by the way, the recruiter wouldn't have the faintest idea where you will actually end up living. That will be determined by the Accom Dept nazis.

Flight Attendant Jailed Over Credit Card Theft
By Alia Al Theeb , Staff Reporter

Dubai: A flight attendant who stole her colleague's credit card and used it to buy perfume and jewellery will spend six months in jail, a court ruled yesterday.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 40-year-old African, identified as L.W. to six months in jail for stealing from her colleague. She will be deported after serving her term.

The Dubai Public Prosecution charged L.W., with stealing 50 euros (Dh235) and a credit card belonging to her 25-year-old Australian colleague.

The suspect had told the court that she stole her colleague's credit card from her purse while they were on-board a flight. She confessed she used it in a number of shops in Dubai to purchase perfume, earrings and a bracelet. However, she denied stealing the 50 euros.

The defence lawyer had told the judge earlier that the public prosecution "exaggerated" the charge sheet.

"The suspect and the client are friends and work colleagues. They settled the dispute and the victim dropped her complaint."

The victim reported the incident to the police whose investigations led to the arrest of L.W.

Muttley:

Thank you for the given article and information. It is really helpful and will make us more prepared when moving to Dubai.

Evita:

Can you give us more information about woking in Dubai, also in Emirates...what should be aware and beware about? Should we ask about something before signing the contract? What questions should we ask in general?

Thank you!!!! Best regards!

Emirates Accomodation

I'm not sure if its by seniority that the crew are placed in hotels or apartments. Depends how many crew resign or decide to live out. You'd better check where you will be living as if you'll be in a hotel you can't wash your clothes or cook. Which means that you have to bring more money with you to keep you going until you get your first flying wage which will be 10 weeks after joining. Also if you are told laundry is paid for that is only for your uniform.

Just check out the thread Muttley sent in the message above (1750) and if you go under Middle East - The City that Cares, you will have a good idea about the culture, law and the real life in Dubai.
Main thing you can ask is where will you be living which most probably you won't get a straight answer. Keep me up to date. Good Luck.

Evita I am not sure if you are aware of the number of crew staying in the hotels already. EK has new batches starting every week which means they are hiring lots of people and without having a place for them to stay....how much possibly longer can they continue doing this. I am going to be joining in the begining of October and I understand that if I have to stay in a hotel for a long time then it will be very expensive.

Emirates Accomodation

Some of the hotels that I know about are quite good. At the moment 60 to 80 crew are starting every week. The info that I'm giving you is from what I know through the new crew that have been in a hotel for about 2 months and from a friend that will be joining soon.
I am telling you this because even though I had my savings plus the money EK lent us, I had free accomodation and still was just making it financially.
What I heard is that the building will be ready by the end of the year. There's one that I know of, most probably more as they are aiming to almost double the crew.

I have just spoken to my girlfriend, working for Ek. She has told me that some of the newies are staying in 5-stars hotels...which is great in one hand, but in other- spending money for laundy and eating out..

Thanks Elly and everybody here, Regards to Sammy

Hello Elly and i keep apologising for late reply and losing thread here. I would be happy to see you in Dubai and shall send you an email again once i got the final approval (e-ticket) from Emirates. May get a Dubai prepaid card or keep my sing card..gosh i am starting to think of all this..sound silly??

Its so crazy for me to get all the medicals done (last three weeks) and finally i had all my reports ready today-and in pink of health to submit to Emirates=)

I feel so touched and appreciative to you and everyone here for sharing. It seems like you use the computer a lot. I think i cant do without internet in Dubai at my own comfort room and i hope is not an hassle to get internet hook up at the accomodation we going to stay. Also hope that I be able to stay in Emirates apartment and not hotels..so we get settle in well and not spending so much money.

The senior crews are right, more expenses to stay in hotel and lots of hidden costs. It is good to prepare us mentally. Again i seen the video and heard from the interviewers that Emirates gave some "pocket money" to new joiners when they arrived at the Dubai airport.

I am still very positive going to Dubai as Emirates is a very good company. All the crews are nice and look here we are all making friendship.

PS: Aside to that..thinking of you too Sammy, trust me age is not a problem for Emirates. See you very soon..^^
Cheers to everyone

--cheers everyone!--

yup, sammy again here.

thank you semangeline, elly, popins, amower, and everyone who's been such a great assistance sharing their experience and also feeling (yeah, the waiting game as such).

it's funny (but hurtful, in a way) to think that when i read the rejection email from emirates the first time i didnt feel anything at all but then a week or so afterwards, i feel like it's been a real kick in the bum bum knowing that i didnt get thru. so many things going on in my head and indeed they are doin my head in, i.e. not too sure whether the chance is still gonna be there next year, should have prepared myself better (i took it too easy as i wasnt ready to leave england for dubai (thanks evita!) but yes i am now!!!), been googling around (in which i should have done it beforhand!) for other airlines but it isnt easy (qatar doesnt do recruitment here in england, etihad seems to have this current recruitment problem) and so forth.

cant get rid of this horrible feeling as yet and keep on regretting for most of the time but surely will manage it ok hopefully soon. just a matter of time i guess.

anyhow, we live and we learn. i just did it one time, failed and i know i should move on to give it a go next year (why next year?! oh ...). some people (like described on my post before) finally made it after quite a few attempts and i really look high on them.

thanks again for all your help! Much appreciated.

cheers ,
sammy

Semangeline: When I joined we were given AED 2500 (UAE dirhams) and that was on the 1st or 2nd day when we started training. That would be around 1250 Sin Dollars. From that money 1000 AED will be deducted from the 1st and 2nd wage and the 500AED will be for you. So basically it will be a bit tough as you will get a very low wage during training. (Go easy on the shopping at first!!)

I'm not sure if you know the date you will be coming but in Dubai Thurs Fri is the weekend and Saturday will be the day you start your meetings and training. Make sure you keep a few photocopies of your passport and the temporary visa that you will receive by email as you won't be able to get a Sim Card otherwise. At the airport you will be met by someone that will take you through customs where they take your passport which you will get back 6 weeks later as they have to put the resident visa on it. (I didn't know about that and wasn't told exactly what's happening)
Make sure you bring some extra cash esp if you will be staying in a hotel.

Just found out weekends in Dubai will change from Thurs Fri to Fri Saturday from next weekend in case you need to contact the Emirates offices.

iuli21: You don't have to call anyone just turn up go a bit early and don't be nervous its not scary. All they will want to see is how well you can work in a team. Don't be too quiet, don't over speak. If you get selected for the one to one interviews you might be able to choose the date that suits you they let my group choose a day from 3 days and the time as well. Make sure you wear a suit.

pramugara: my mate just left Emirates to work for Air New Zealand based in London where he does long haul flights. He said training is much easier than Emirates and salary is good. He gets to work Mon to either Thurs or Fri - not exactly sure, weekends off and salary he said was very good. He left a few weeks ago so maybe if you check their website and find out if the interviews are still open it could be an option for you. You get to stay in the UK and be away for 4 or 5 days a week. Hope this helps and if not don't worry maybe something better is in store for you!!!

Thanks! the information you have provided is very helpful. I just hope they provide with us a permanent accomodation as soon as possible so its easier for us to settle in a foreign land.
Getting photocopies of our visa and passport is a good suggestion and I was also thinking about it. Saves you the hassle of running around in a new place.
I have also heard that getting a roaming on ur mobile is very expensive as u need to deposit around 5000dhms. So prepaid calling card is the best option left.
How are the gym facilties in the company accomodation? Are they good?

Every building has a gym and a swimming pool. They're not huge but the equipment is quite new and opens from early morning till 10pm (in my building I can say cause I my only workout is walking from the lounge to the kitchen!! so I didn't get to see the other gyms)
There are over 15 Emirates buildings and even if you are in hotel you will be able to use them. All you have to do is sign in at the reception. Just find out where the nearest EK accomodation is. Also ask if they have laundry facilities in the building cause I heard that some buildings have but not sure if its true. It will save you a lot of money if you're in a hotel. Taxis are really cheap here, they tend to drive a bit crazy and dangerous so don't be shy to tell them to drive slower, there's a high accident rate over here so you have to take care of yourself.

With regards to Sim Cards pay as you go is the best to get as its quite cheap to call plus local landlines are free except for the hotels. I never got roaming normally I use my UK sim card when I'm out of Dubai as I can use it almost everywhere.

Also for all you guys that have been selected I just found out that from next week the weekends in the UAE will be changing from Thursday Friday to Friday Saturday. In case you will need to call the offices here. Also that means you should be starting your training on Sunday instead of Saturday but make sure you confirm with the information you get given or email them if you're due to arrive next weekend. You will need to wear suits for the first 2 or 3 days of training after that you will be given the uniform so make sure you get your suits with you. Make sure you get a few copies of the temporary visa that they will send you by email plus some copies of your passport. Also an ID or driving licence as you will need it if you go out to clubs or anywhere that serves alcohol as you have to be over 21 and they will ask you for it almost everywhere.
Hope this information helps.

If you need anything else don't hesitate to ask. I'll be flying tomorrow so I might take a bit longer to reply. Good Luck and Take Care.
