EK Resume Help!!!

Have been looking at my resume and it SUCKS!!!!

I know I should emphasise CS skills etc, but there's so many things I need to change....

I have some job gaps and lack of references... have looked on the web but all these so-called 'expert sites' contradict each other! I am even more confused than before!!! So I figure some of you here may have better ideas of what to put.

Also I always thought 2 pages plus cover letter was enough, but some say 1 page, others three.

What sort of headings should I put? Photos? marital status? (I know you shouldn't usually, but the online form asked this....). Put it in a folder? Don't?

Any advice much appreciated!!!!!

Sky

SkySista Im not sure how your resume can be improved since ive got the same problems but heres what im doing...

2 pages max resume and a brief cover letter - they will be going through so many on the day so you dont wanna make it difficult for them to find what they are looking for or bore them to tears...

As for headings i have skills, work history and education sorta customised to what i think they will find more relevant. Like you said you need to emphasise your CS skills - thats the most important thing.

amongthestars i was hoping they would hold one in Melb but theres no telling when...at the begining of the year they even had Sydney on their list but now its completely gone

sydney -> perth

I AM!!

well its my first post, so dunno if i qualify for a ppruner yet

quick question, how long are you staying in perth for? ive read some terrible waiting stories, but a friend of mine who went to the sydney one last year said that it should take around 2 weeks total for all the interviews (provided im not crap and make it past the first one!)

and 202bucks return with virginblue made it so much more sweeter!!!!!

2 weeks!!! Im only going to be there for 3 days. I can barely afford the trip as it is. I dont know how you got the deal with Virginblue, but whenever i looked it was way more than that. Guess your lucky. Hope to see you there.

Quick question to anyone who can help, do you need an invite to attend the Open day or can you just show up? Ive read some stuff on their website and they said that they invite people to the open day. Up till now ive always thought that you could just show up, maybe im just getting nervous but an answer from someone whose already been through this would work miracles.

hi there,
wanting to help you. There is no need for an invite to attend EK open days, anyone can attend. Bring your resume, passport photo with you.
If successful through the open day, they will either call you that day or the next day inviting you to attend a screening selection process which involves usually around 30-40 people having group discussions. Throughout the day, there will be eliminations for the unsuccessful and if you happen to make it through the last stage, you will do an english test for non english speakers and a small chat with recruiting officers one by one. You will organise a final interview time for the next day or so.
Final interview is fine. They make you feel comfortable but ask alot of questions, so know your resume and have some examples of work situations handy in your head. Be dressed appropriately and do everything they ask you to have prepared...they will tell you. Dont act nervous because they will pick it up and be yourself and smile alot, they like it. Maybe even throw some humour in to break the ice a little...
Ive just finished my final interview a week ago and I am waiting anxiously for a reply. Just wondering if anyone can help me out. Do you think I could ring them and follow up on my interview and how long does it usually take for an answer.???
Appreciate anyones help.
Thanks...

from what my friend told me, and most other EK workers on these forums, be prepared to wait arounf 4-6 weeks
the longer you wait, the better it is! (though the worse you will feel, just sitting there watching the phone day in,day out)

although hopefully its a lot more streamlined this year, im hoping not to get the call to early, otherwise its a 'thanks for coming jack'
and my names not even jack!!!

Tosha Thanks for the info, looks like i might have to extend my stay in Perth if im successful. At least youve prepared me for that now thankyou.

As for calling them bout your interview, im inclined to agree with what Cannard said . Everything ive read from what others who have applied have said is consistant, the later they get back to you the better it looks. Good luck anyway.

Photo help!!!

Hi guys!!

PER EK open day is tomorrow (and I should be in bed getting beauty sleep!)

For varios reasons I have only just got back my photos (digital, and not professional ones as I am BROKE )

Tried to print them today at college, and whaddya know? Their color printer is not working. Rush over to SNAP who want twelve bucks just to access a floppy disk ($12 I don't have, and not including picture prints)

By this time all shops are closed so no alternative but my aprents' place. Yep. Their printer was out of toner too.

Are the pictures REALLY important???? Have resume, a copy of my passport, and a tiny passport photo, but will it go against me for not having photos?

I have included my online reference number on my resume as i uploaded my pictures to the EK web site, will this be okay???

Am planning to try find somewhere to get prints tomorrow morning on the way in, but may not be possible on a Saturday.....

Anyone with info..... reply or email me lady_torres(at)hotmail.com.

Ta very much!!!

Sky

PS - is there anything else I have to bring besides passport copy & birth certificate? and should i staple them with resume? I dont have time to look thru all of the replies here (again lol)

@SkySista

If ur attending an open day it is important to have pictures with you, because they will ask your cv and pictures and after looking at them they decide if you're going to be called for a initial screening process. If you have an pre-arranged interview, then they saw your application and pictures over your internet application, so you won't need them for this occasion, only for final interview if you get lucky. So you see for yourself...But anyway go for it, as I know a girl who went on thier interview not knowing what cv is, not to tell that she didn't even had any picture with her!!! She wrote it with her hand during the interview! And she's been in Dubai for over two years now working as cabin crew...
SkySista, you just go get your chance...wish you all the luck!

Ek Open Day Perth

Well. It is now 12:40pm and have finished the EK Open Day. It was pretty much what i expected - handing in CV's etc.

I got into town about 7:30-7:45 (because of what was said about there being sooooo many people)

Got to the Sheraton about 8.00. Went upstairs and i'd say there were about 30 people there. So we stood around and introduced ourselves, etc etc. By 9 there would have been at LEAST 250 people there. I'd say in the end maybe 350/400? I think some were downstairs.

Anyway, they had to split into two groups as there was not enough room in the ballroom.

I met SydEK, who did a brilliant job actually finding me from my vague description (in real life she is extremely glam, and lovely - and knows Arabic - double points to you! - was a blast having someone to talk to!!!)

Met so many lovely people, most everyone looked very glam. I felt positively daggy after about a half hour, I swear! There were a couple of current QF crew, as well as two JQ from Syd (I and C, if you're here, you know who you are! )

Lots of guys which I wasn't expecting. And a few people who have no idea how to dress for such an occasion! (Backless top, anyone? I'm sure it looks nice, but not for EK dear! )

So we sat down, and the three recruiters intorduced themselves. Danni (tall gal with red/brown hair and English accent) Amelita (petite Asian(?) lady) and Marie who I think was from the MEL office (older lady with short hair.)

They outlined what was going to happen (videos, questions, hand in CV's etc)

Watched a video which was mainly PR stuff, then one about training and one EK girl's trip from arriving in Dubai to first supernumerary flight.

Questions went for I'd guess around a half hour, lots of people asking. one girl came out with a question about Dubai being voted Safest City to travel to, which was a good question but it just sounded too practiced. Danni didn't even know.

(For anyone who was there, I was the girl in the front row who asked about alcohol, Hajj flights and if they had CC who became pilots ) I tried to remember names, and to use the recruiter's names when speaking to them.

Then after that we handed in our CV's. I tried to explain about my photos, and Danni needed to write my mobile number on it (as for some reason it wasn't on my CV ) so Iexplained that my actual pictures were in my online application (I had the Ref number on my CV) but Danni told me they can only access it from Dubai (crap, crap.... so remember ladies and gents, get your photos done in enough time that if you get a stuff-up like I did, you have enough time, not ON THE DAY, as being Saturday I couldn't get them done on the way in!!!!!!!

Pretty much it, as the second group was then let in.

Bit brutal really considering they will only go by what's on your CV, and you have no chance to make an impression really except for the questions part. (Be aware though that marie took notes from the moment we sat down, some girl talked while Danni was, and I saw her write that down too! )

All in all I didn't expect much more, met some nice people and made new friends so it was good anyway.

Told that those whom they want to talk with again will know by late today (but isn't that what they always say!) and 1st round Sunday/Monday, with final interviews Tue/Wed/Thur.

She said if successful you could start in as little as 6 weeks (though I doubt it!)

One thing I did find very interesting was someone asked about age cutoff. Got the usual un-incriminating response, but she did say that it took her 6 years to get in with EK and that it was her first airline. Later on, she mentioned something about flying from England "With my previous airline". Hmmmmmmm

Anyway hope this helps, good luck everyone, and let us know if you get/have got "The Call"

Sky

Oh yeah, there was even a girl called Roxy I think, she came all the way from HAWAII!!
