Angel

Hello again
I was discussing my application to emirates with a girl who is applying to variuos other airlines. She told me that emirates are much more likely to recruit people with previuos cabin crew experience than those with none. I have had 6 years of providing excellent customer service but not in a cabin crew role. Does anyone know if this is true about emirates preferring to only recruit those with previuos experience.

Thanks

Kel

Sure, any service experience - especially in hotels, catering, tourism - will be good. It also helps if you've been working in a country other than your own or are well travelled and/or speak any other languages.

I'm already 31 and starting in march. Never worked in an airline or hospitality before. I'd still say get in quick as I'm sure there's always an unofficial age limit, but so far you're clear...

Hey all,

I'm planning to go to the recruitment day in Perth this Feb.

Just wondering what I should wear. I've heard EK are really hung up about what women look like in a skirt - i.e. if you have 'bad' legs they will think it a drawback!! Seeing as I'm absolutely rake-thin (no fault of my own I might add- I eat like a horse) I'm thinking black pantsuit and a plain white shirt.

Going by what others have said about recruitment days, and there being so many people there with little time to make an impression, I was thinking I would wear a nice bright scarf or something, just to help them remember me. Do you think this is a good idea? If not, why?

Also, would bringing along a women's style briefcase be a bad idea? All my other bags are too small to fit my papers etc in.....

By the way, good luck to all of you interviewing, and congrats Budgie on your new career!

Hi SkySista:

In my opinion, one should wear an outfit as close to the flight attendant's uniform as possible. You need to look professional and as sharp as possible yet still approachable (you probably already know this). Be conservative but I think a colorful scarf will be a nice touch. A color that compliments rather than dominate would be excellent. I would recommend wearing a dark skirt suit instead of pant suit. All the girls at the session I went to had a skirt on. And if you have long hair, I would pull it all back in a bun. All the girls that made it to the final interview had hair tied back neatly in a bun. As far as your legs and being rake thin, I think thin legs would be an advantage wouldn't it? As long as you suit fits well and you have excellent posture, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

One way of achieving the "look" is visualize yourself at the boarding door of the aircraft, and that you are the first thing that a passenger see walking down the jet bridge - what type of first impression and emotional triggers do you want to convey about the airline?

As a guy, I wore a dark navy suit with a crisp white shirt (boring) but had a colorful tie, and wore a different tie for each of the rounds (diff. days). I did not have a briefcase but had a black leather folder with all my documentation, notepad and pen. You will want to take notes for questions later.

Good luck and have fun! The recruiters like to see you relax and have fun despite the stressful situation.

Ditto

And if you're really worried about those legs, consider the double benefit of wearing a beige or light coloured suit with a skirt: It echoes the EK uniform colours so they can better visualise you in the role. Lighter colours also make people look, well, fatter...

Thanks. I had heard that advice about mimicking the airline uniform as closely as possible - it is a good idea. Think I may see about finding/borrowing a beige suit...plenty of size 6 friends luckily..... though unfortunately I am one of those people who tends to look extremely washed-out (especially in the EK color ). think will dig out the reddish lippy & really have a practise at what makeup I'll wear.

Normally, I'd agree that being thin would be an advantage.... but seriously, if you knew me....!!! I'm at a weight that is proportional to my height and in the healthy range (working my best to add a little more :P ) but lots of people have the impression I'm a tiny thing whou'd blow over in a breeze... not exactly the look I want to give over, as we all know a CC job can be quite tough sometimes! As for wearing a skirt, it's not exactly the thinness of my legs that bothers me, it's the "scrawny legs"/shape factor. Lol yes I sound like it's a hang-up but I've had enough people tell me that I have chicken legs for me to worry about it!

As for scarf, I have a lovely reddish-yellow toned scarf I think would be quite nice, plus it gives the added bonus of filling in the collar-line of a shirt (for that "modest" middle-eastern look lol). But I will see how it looks with beige first.

I have extremeeeely long hair so a bun is the only way to go for me (getting haircut for my birthday 2 days before which is probably a bad idea, but oh well)

Thanks again!

Sky

PS - one last thing - I wear glasses, mainly for driving, should I take them off before I get there, or will I get caught out if they put up a whiteboard & I can't read it? I had rimless ones but they got broken.... eeep!

don't wear glasses

I completed a one day preparation course called Results Centre and they said that the middle eastern airlines don't like their cabin crew to wear glasses because of they don't look as attractive. They suggested to wear ccontacts.

when i went for my first round of interviews with Qantas over two years ago, there were a couple of girls who had dressed themselves to mimmick the old Qantas uniform down to a tee! I must say they looked smart, but it was just too obvious what they were doing, after speaking over time with interviewers, i don't think its too good an idea to look too much like the airlines CC uniform, comes off being a bit corny and tacky. The interviewers aren't stupid and know what you will look like in the uniform just by looking at you. As long as on the day you look smart and professional and pick up on the little things like Emirates wanting crew to wear contacts instead of glasses, hair back in a bun etc you will be fine.

Good luck and just enjoy the day!

Funny you write that, because since I last posted, I've pretty much decided to go with black... mainly because I don't even own a beige suit and secondly I personally think I look way better in black!! Though beige would be a lot cooler being February!!

As for contacts, I don't have any, so will just pop my glasses in the bag.... may be able to organise some before then... I have been meaning to for a while now... I suppose now is the time!!!

A dark suit is a great idea. When I said mimicking them, I meant in the general sense (such as wear a skirt suit, scarf etc.) but not down to the tee. I do agree that blatant copying screams desperation and would steer away from it.

Just got my medical forms for Emirates. Glasses are indeed not allowed when working so contacts must be worn!

Good luck!

Skysista - EK like their crew to wear soft contacts. In order to let them see how you'll look without glasses you'd better get some. Don't worry too much about the suit colour as long as it's a suit with a skirt!

Commander - I was 29 when I first applied and 30 when I did my interviews. 31 now: they like to take their time...

What to wear,

Guys!

I have an EK interview few days later and I prepared a beige suit!!

I've just read you guys oppinion about wearing similar colour suit with EK CC.

Will that cause negative effect like you guys said?

I spent a lot of time to prepare that beige colour suit but now I'm not sure if I should wear it or other colour siut like dark bule.

How do you reckon guys??

A lot of websites and stuff I've seen recommend 'subtly mimicking' the uniform of your chosen airline. This gives the assessors an impression of you in unoform but doesn't make you seem so desperate as to wear a carbon copy.

So now you have the suit, you may as well use it. But wear it with a pale blue or pink blouse - not white. Try an auburn or orange scarf. I'm no fashion guru but get colours that match, echo the EK uniform but don't look too much like the real thing.
