Sorry,Ridge Runner, not on the continent of Africa.

India Four Two 18th May 2012 13:47

How about somewhere in the US?

SilentHandover 18th May 2012 14:47

France or a French territory?

sabredog 18th May 2012 14:53

Simon,not the U.S.
SLH, yes,to the latter.

Lordflasheart 18th May 2012 17:37

Wild guess - Gia Lam - late 40s. Possibly (very) early 50s. LFH

sabredog 18th May 2012 18:12

A very good guess,LFH. It is indeed Gia Lam (Hanoi) Airport, taken during the
French Indochina War,1946-1954.
Well done.
YHC

Lordflasheart 18th May 2012 19:53

Thank you Sabre, SiR - Gia Lam – Well, I was working on it being a USAAF field stateside when SHO suggested French Colonial so it's really his fault I got it.

Re Aboukir - the Battle of the Nile (aka the Battle of Aboukir Bay) - The Immortal Memory - There's even a Nelson's Island just off the point.

Try this aerodrome for size - some interesting numbers involved. Sorry about the fuzzy photo, my nerves were playing up on finals and I needed both hands. You'll have to be quick, I'm leaping off for the weekend later on Saturday. LFH

Telluride,KTEX,Colorado.....OH if correct..

Lordflasheart 18th May 2012 22:28

Spot on Sycamore, Telluride it is :ok: LFH.

Trying to Land - R/W 27

The field elevation's bigger than the runway length - 9070 v 7000

From their website - "TellurideRegionalAirport sits atop Deep Creek Mesa and is North America's highest commercial airport. At 9,070 feet above sea level, the airport offers picturesque views of the San Juan mountains. And now - getting to Telluride has never been easier – ...."

.... if you have nerves of steel. :ooh:

Gia Lam! Doh! How could a miss an airfield in my own back yard? I've driven past it and looked at it on Google Earth. I was amused to see that the Landing Tee is not aligned with any of the runways.

Re Aboukir - the Battle of the Nile (aka the Battle of Aboukir Bay)
Yes, a lot of history in this area. The Lighthouse and the Library in Alexandria, the Rosetta Stone in nearby Rashid and for something completely different, the movie "Ice Cold in Alex".

sycamore 19th May 2012 21:51

`Hoskins, I`ve told you before ,you are supposed to land on the `runway`,and taxi to dispersal and park it there`..You are not to disperse it in the parking lot so you can get in the taxi...!!!

longer ron 19th May 2012 22:03

ExAscoteer 21st May 2012 00:49

Downham Market?

OH if correct.

olympus 21st May 2012 11:50

Downham Market is correct. I-Item crashed near the station's Operations Block on 14 May 1943.
