Broxbourne was the airfield where "The Mad Major" hired his aircraft for his flight under 15 bridges across the Thames in 1953. He was prosecuted and had to pay costs of 10 guineas and lost his licence for a year (although he got it back after 7 months), but he was not actually convicted. More info on Broxbourne can be found here

Leavesden?
In my previous effort I was referring to Maylands nr Romford Essex ie England NOT Oz; now called Maylands Golf Club.

olympus 13th May 2012 11:40

Not Leavesden.

nacluv 13th May 2012 21:32

Halifaxes? 6 Grp? I'll go for Tholthorpe, viewed from the NW, looking SE.

olympus 13th May 2012 22:01

Well done nacluv, exactly right.

To complete your answer, the caption to the photo (From Hull, Hell and Halifax) reads 'F/Lt Doug Morison (RCAF) at the controls of Halifax Mk III MZ359 'G' of 77 Sqn, September 1944. In the background is the 6 Group airfield of Tholthorpe...'

You have control!

nacluv 13th May 2012 23:08

Yay! I'm pleased with that. Thanks Olympus.

I thought Halifaxes were quite likely to be 6Grp/RCAF, so we would be looking at North Yorkshire. I was lucky that the runway/peritrack extension at the SE corner is evident. Then lucky that most of the features, including surrounding fields and the Hag Lane/Sam Lane junction, are still the same today!

How's about this - I don't think we've had this before?

Clyffe Pypard?

nacluv 14th May 2012 18:59

Sorry, not Clyffe Pypard.

chevvron 14th May 2012 19:36

How about Lympne?
(Oi doesn't somebody else wanna play?)

nacluv 14th May 2012 19:56

Looks like it's just the two of us. :)

Sorry, not Lympne either.

chevvron 14th May 2012 20:05

Well it looks like ex military with much demolition evident (I can see the bases of at least 3 other hangars) leaving one hangar ('A' type? 20s/30s).
Hawkinge maybe.

nacluv 14th May 2012 22:39

It's on my home turf, so north of Watford Gap.

In fact, it's so much on my home turf that my home from birth to early adulthood would be visible in that picture had it been taken some years later (although I appreciate that isn't much use as a clue).

WE992 15th May 2012 11:05

Polebrook, Northants?

chevvron 15th May 2012 11:24

Spitalgate?

nacluv 15th May 2012 16:44

North of both...

You are correct in that the site is indeed in the process of being demolished. It was quite a large facility, with several similar hangars.

sabredog 15th May 2012 19:15

R.A.F. Coal Aston?
