Sorry, not Melksham. It was very much an "operational" aerodrome'. Ultimately, the airfield had a total of six of those hangars. The concrete foundations of the hangars are still very much visible on Google Earth. The runways are also visible.

Duckbutt 24th May 2012 23:01

Mossbank, Saskatchewan?

evansb 25th May 2012 01:44

Yes, Duckbutt, it is Mossbank, Sask. Canada.:ok: It was home of the BCATP's #2 B&G S (Bombing and Gunnery School). From 1940 to 1944, the base processed 6000 students.
Today, the airfield is abandoned, but the RCAF Snowbirds use the airfield to practice low-level fly-bys for airshows. The northern portion of the airfield is a golf course.

Your control

Thanks.

William Denny's shipbuilding yard at Dumbarton, together with the Blackburn Aircraft Factory. Also Dumbarton Rock and Castle.

Duckbutt 25th May 2012 09:36

Correct Sabredog, all yours.

sabredog 25th May 2012 09:43

Many thanks,Duckbutt. An interesting challenge.
Nothing suitable at present, so it has to be Open House.

Another ancient watery mystery -

Looks like Guernsey.

Lordflasheart 25th May 2012 14:43

Guernsey's a big island Oly ;) You got it, but wanna be more specific ? LFH

olympus 25th May 2012 16:10

My best guess would be the harbour at St Peter Port.

I spent a large part of my early aviation career flying into and out of GCI so became very familiar with the view of the town and harbour from the air.

Duckbutt 25th May 2012 16:19

It's actually the French seaplane base at at the 'Castle Emplacement', between the harbour and the model yacht pond in Guernsey. The latter was drained and the site used for a hangar and accomodation huts.

I know because I had that same pic prepared for this thread at some appropriate time in the future.

Your call Olympus.

Lordflasheart 25th May 2012 16:29

Correct Oly - only being picky for the purists you understand. We've had "Guernsey" before - but twas the International that time.

Sorry I pinched your idea Ducky.

As Duckbutt already knows -

French flying boat base in Guernsey St Peter Port harbour mid 1917 – early 1919.

Tellier 200 and possibly FBA flying boat (type unspecified) up to a dozen, due to the very successful submarine war being waged by Germany against allied shipping principally in this case, in Channel and UK coastal waters. View looking north. LFH

Oly has control.

olympus 25th May 2012 17:13

Thanks LFH and Duckbutt.

I'm sorry this is not a very good photo...

Lordflasheart 25th May 2012 18:46

Is this a frozen lake I see before me, or just an icy field ? LFH

olympus 25th May 2012 19:22

Not a frozen lake LFH. The pock-marks are bomb damage.

Lordflasheart 26th May 2012 09:48

I was going to ask - our bombs or theirs ? but if it's chalky subsoil - how about Croydon circa 1940 ? OH if correct - too much else to do. LFH

olympus 26th May 2012 11:35

Their bombs; not Croydon but an historic airfield which no longer exists.

Hen Ddraig 26th May 2012 11:57

Could it be West Malling

olympus 26th May 2012 12:08

Sorry, not West Malling; even more famous, I would say.
