There used to be a railway line spur running from the main railway line near Newbury into Welford but I think it's been closed now; it's most intensive use was apparentlyduring the Viet Nam war.
Greenham Cruise Missile deployments may have occured here; there was a domestic site here in the late '70s/early '80s, but the only deployments I knew about were at a certain British army camp near RAF Oakhanger occuring every 2 or 3 months. As to Jenkins challenge at #17869, I would guess one of the USAF bases in France vacated when De Gaulle chucked the USAF out. |
An original reply from Chevvron, but pre-dating those years. De Gaulle looked more like my maternal grandfather than any of my favourite uncles.

"failed due mostly to the intransigence of the contemporary favourite uncle"
Favourite Uncle?? I have many Uncle's but the Favourite Uncle is shown below? https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....c3c79b686e.jpg If so, and he frustrated it, we're talking Operation Frantic perhaps - the USAAF plan to base bombers in the USSR in WW2. This of course takes us to Poltava in the Ukraine which was one of 3 bases the USAAF used. |

Yes. I will ignore the current protocol, and say well done. Recently published book has revealed all. Better to confirm now and perhaps we can move on.

OH I'm afraid - I'm out for the next couple of days :*

NOT ALWAYS HAZY HERE

Concorde 002 at Tullamarine Airport, 1972?
|
Cannot fault you on the aircraft type but the aerodrome is certainly not Tulla. .
. Check the background and I'll post an uncropped view with more clues as the location in the morning. |
Well...the ground vehicle looks the the aft of a 1972 Holden UTE. Any points for that?

Ellenkon Athens - the old airport? Ellinikon Ellinikon Ellinikon ........... Ελληνικόν - I'll get it right eventually |
Did a Concorde ever get as far as Oz?
|
Wikipedia "In terms of the Concorde though, the reason the Concorde flew so many demonstration flights to Sydney that Qantas took an option to purchase four Concordes. British Aircraft Corporation, began a hard sell, sending several planes to Sydney and Melbourne. In the end, the Concorde was never purchased by Qantas"

Evansb - full points for the year..
Asturias56 - fishing in Wikipedia - there is good fishing near this airport as well. Does the uncropped picture assist with the background. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....d6268c12ea.jpg |
well that looks like a Penfolds Sign picked out on the hill above the guy's hat but that ain't Adelaide
That uniform looks vaguely Irish but it doesn't look like Shanon or Aldergrove or Dublin either |
An Irish policeman at Sydney?
|
Is it Sydney?
|
It certainly is Sydney, 1972.
I cropped initially in case the gable markers made it too easy and also to remove the old South Sydney transfer station chimney which, for may years, provided a "shield" for high rise development as the mental pygmies in the Department wanted to assess each application as a separate event rather than declaring the airspace . Not sure who actually gets the nod for the next challenge: Jenkins for the hint or Asturias for asking the question.and some good detective work and geography lessons. Lets make it Jenkins on the timestamps. MJG |
Thanks, found said photograph eventually. Really quite an ancient airport. Now this. Simplest name is shared or has been shared in various areas with links to the English language; I have indeed worked from such a place. This spot, merely a passing acquaintance en-route.

I' certainly didn't get anywhere near Sydney on the last challenge - I was bog-bound in the Emerald Isle IIRC.
For the latest challenge - are we in Africa? |
