Jenkins has got it - Atkinson Field, British Guyana it is.
No idea what the vehicle is, but it looks suspiciously like it has right-hand drive. Was this the clue that you had seen? https://o4eena.bl3301.livefilestore....&cropmode=none Couple of other images to share while we are at this airfield https://nua5bw.bl3301.livefilestore....&cropmode=none https://0ymita.bl3301.livefilestore....&cropmode=none |
Somewhere a little cooler................... one of those fields you stumble over and wonder why it isn't better known.....

“Green and pleasant land?”
|
If you mean a potential location for the New Jerusalem - no - but it is a green and pleasant place

From the brown staining in the fields it is clearly somewhere flat. I think your last airfield was on a Danish island and Denmark is mostly flat so a search through Danish grass airfields led me to Tonder.
|
It is indeed Tonder - a very quiet but v pleasant spot Flap 40 has control

Going back to the Amchitka challenge of a couple of pages ago, I found this interesting photo of the bomber strip which I thought I'd share. What a grim looking place.

Hooligans of 6 Squadron! It is 8 Sqn not 6 This was 1970 during the Radfan escapades - Sharjah as has been mentioned. |
Oldpax has it: RAF Sharjah in 1970. Hunters of 8 Sqn, RAF. We were based at Muharraq, Bahrain, but had no weapon training facility there, so we (and our neighbours 208 Sqn) would visit Sharjah regularly to use the range on the coast a few miles SW of Dubai.
After the withdrawal from Aden in 1967, Sharjah was expanded and had a few years of being quite busy. In 1969-70 it was home to 78 Sqn (Wessex), 84 Sqn (Andovers), a detachment of Shackletons from the UK, and an AAC Sqn with Beavers. All gone by the end of 1971. In the late 90s I went back a few times. There was by then a new airport about 6 miles inland. The old field had been built over. The runway had become a dual carriageway with lighting on a central strip - but not resurfaced, so the old taxiway turnoff lighting was still present! |
Lovely photo, kenparry!
|
Open house then!I mentioned Sharjah as it seemed the only one left out!Nice to see an 8 squadron pair. There is a book coming out with Amazon on"Radfan Hunters by an ex 8 squadron friend of mine!!Yes I also served on 8sqdn but early sixties.
