The caption attached to this very rare photo indicates that it was a Junkers photo.
The airfield is still in use. |
|
Flughafen Erfurt I then found this on their website https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....fcb11a834.jpeg Edit: sorry I have to call OH |
Nicely researched Bear.
The Bear has called OH. |
BACK IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS
I was recently offered a fabric hanger for my new apron so someone thinks they are useful these days. This airport is unlikely to have a fabric hanger these days.

The 504 (K?) initially fooled me into thinking this was the UK but a little research took me down under. Mascot?
|
Good research. Mascot it is or as it was: certainly doesn't look like this today with fence posts and barbed wire.
MJG |
Sorry for the delay chaps. I was flying.
Where's this? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....8e6a817df4.jpg |
The long runway runs NE-SW. There is no trace of this airfield on GE. |
Three runways in triangular layout suggest RAF Bomber Command.
Long main runway NE-SW. I'll shoot for UK, probably Lincolnshire. |
|
Bl**dy Hell dook. Is there no stopping you?
I'm going to spend a bit time assembling a fiendishly clever challenge with which I shall lurk, awaiting OH. That is all. |
I've found that posting anything genuinely informative means the challenge only last about 10 seconds - you can either go the tourist route posting odd pictures of the area around the challenge ( a series of "McDonald of the World" or "Great and Not So Great Airport Hotels") or post no pictures at all and give out a series of hideously twisted cryptic clues
these seem to stretch the challenge out to 24 hours max............... :ok: |
When I post a challenge the aim is not for it to remain for 24 hours.
I consider a challenge to be "successful" when someone solves it. Auxtank, "fiendishly clever challenge" eh ? I can do that too, but I prefer to be straightforward. |
I prefer the tough ones TBH - and long ones give a chance for more people across different time zones and work hours a chance to get involved - which I think improves the experience
A series of quickly solved challenges is hard to keep up with as well - I can't always have PPrune always open for example Plus I learn so much from the thought processes and immense knowledge of posters when they explain their reasoning for a guess/answer rather than just give a name/location |
A good argument.
|
I admit I do enjoy a good search with the odd clue being dropped by the poster. It's a chance to learn something you didn't know about a whole new piece of the Earth. The Russian one not long ago was excellent.
I wouldn't change Which Aerodrome? - I think it works well. |
Since it is 0500 local in Calgary I think we'll have to wait a while.
|
dook is correct on two counts. Firstly it is RAF Skellingthorpe and secondly I was asleep! I had never heard of this airfield, which is now the Lincoln suburb of Birchwood. Some of the roads on the west side are named after other RAF stations. dook has control |
Thank you I42.
There is a memorial to the airfield in the town. For those who like la chasse.... https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....1fcbd003cd.jpg |
