JENKINS 14th Aug 2019 17:45

Just spent an idle half-hour matching engine to aircraft to nearby river. It certainly works with this spot.

dook 14th Aug 2019 17:48

Would that be the river Exe ?

JENKINS 14th Aug 2019 18:00

No, not the Exe. Nearest close match in my terms to Exeter would be Christchurch, long since closed. I lived on that river in my youth, and much later in my dotage. And that river was yours also, albeit in name only and not location. No, not the Adour.

dook 14th Aug 2019 18:03

Mine also ?

Avon ?

From my aged memory Christchurch, Hampshire (as it was when closed) only had a grass runway. Also, at the time of closure you would only have seen Austers, Tiger Moths, and some ex AST Oxfords, before they were broken up. All hangars on the west side, with one exception being the ATC gliding school at the south end.

JENKINS 14th Aug 2019 18:51

Avon, yes. Christchurch, Avon, Sea Vixen. In like manner, Lossie, Spey, Bucaneer. Now for the airfield in question, Airfield, Engine, Aircraft. For what it is worth, O Level geography wii reveal that the river flows the wrong way.

dook 14th Aug 2019 18:57

Well, I've found it but it doesn't say where it is.

Full Sutton innit.

JENKINS 14th Aug 2019 19:00

Yes, that's the place. Now look into RAF history, engine names, football clubs, William the Conquerer, and so on.

dook 14th Aug 2019 19:01

Can't be bothered to do that at the moment.

JENKINS 14th Aug 2019 19:03

Yes, Full Sutton. Chelsea Football Club, 1066, Stamford Bridge, RR Derwent, Meteor T7, and so on. Prison brightly lit at night.

Kemble Pitts 14th Aug 2019 19:03

Full Sutton

JENKINS 14th Aug 2019 19:08

Dook first old bean, but only just. He has the floor.

dook 14th Aug 2019 19:14

I have never flown with a Derwent so I don't understand why you said it was my engine also.:ooh:

A little different:

Christchurch did have a hard runway originally laid in 1943 using steel mesh and concrete then tarmaced over in 1954..

Hi dook, your photo looks military. Something about your photo makes me think it's either very hot or very cold!

ea200 15th Aug 2019 18:18

I think there's some snow lying around so probably cold. Europe?

dook 15th Aug 2019 18:22

Good evening jensdad.

It's neither very hot nor very cold.

It was a small military airfield and some years ago it was proposed to make it into an international airport. Ate the end of 2016 it was described as not operating but in 2017 a company was operating from there.

That might make it easier.

And good evening to you ea200.

It is in Europe but not high latitude.

Listening out.

jensdad 15th Aug 2019 20:45

Could it be the airfield that was known to Ryanair as Balaton Airport? I remember there were efforts a few years ago to get the place going as a second international airport for Hungary. I then heard that Ryanair had pulled out and haven't heard anything about the place since!

dook 15th Aug 2019 20:49

Good evening jensdad.

Issa quite a long way south of Hungary.
