Nellis AFB?

Duckbutt 21st Sep 2011 09:03

Not Nellis.

The guy in the photo is looking to the NW. The airfield was somewhat shortlived and no trace remains today. It did however have a brief period of widespread exposure.

The place from where the picture was taken was even more shortlived.

Duckbutt 21st Sep 2011 13:25

Don't know if this helps at all but it is factually correct to say that at no time during its brief existence did this this airfield have a working control tower.

jindabyne 21st Sep 2011 13:38

A film set rhen?

sabredog 21st Sep 2011 13:51

Northrup Strip,White Sands,N.M?

Duckbutt 21st Sep 2011 14:05

Genuine airfield Jindabyne with added 'facilities'.

Not NM Sabredog.

MReyn24050 21st Sep 2011 14:12

The old airport, Rancho Conejo Airport in Newbury Park. It is just west of Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks, CA. Used in the film "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"

Duckbutt 21st Sep 2011 14:31

That's the one, it was known as Rancho Conejo.

The pic was a still from the film and is possibly slightly unfair. A 'tower' was built on the field but had no glass and was only used as a camera base for filming the flying stunts and the scene where the controller is hanging off the side. The gentleman in the pic was actually on a set in a studio miles away with a genuine image of the airfield back projected.

You have it.

MReyn24050 21st Sep 2011 15:39

Thanks Duckbutt, interesting challenge. Here is something closer to home.

TheChitterneFlyer 21st Sep 2011 16:33

I believe it's Shenington.

OH if correct.

TCF

MReyn24050 21st Sep 2011 16:40

:ok: It is Shenington once known as RAF Edgehill. Edgehill was selected as the base for flight tests of the Gloster E28/39 Pioneer W4041 - the Whittle jet due to its proximity to the manufacturer's Gloster and Power jets.

TheChitterneFlyer has declared Open House.

Pick another mate...:)...

US bases at Korat, Udon, Ubon, Nakhon Phanom and Takhli.

Noyade 23rd Sep 2011 11:18

Cottesmore

1999?

Russell Gulch 24th Sep 2011 07:27

Indeed it's Cottesmore, CGB, so you have the chair.

Year was 1996, so not too bad a guess.
