First class. honours for that man!!! Kai Tak it is.. mid70's maybe

over to you

kcockayne 22nd Jun 2018 08:42

Well, that has taken me completely by surprise - it really was a guess (based on the red painted top of the building behind the PAA 707, it looked familiar). Whilst I am looking for a suitable photo I will let someone else submit an entry. I'll contribute something later.

Here's one I flew at a few years ago. I flew a new type, but the three in the pictures are already in my logbook.

Let us work on this .............

The glider wing in the foreground has an RAF-style roundel on it -but I'm sure that's not the UK and it red centre looks to have a symbol in it - so maybe Australia, Canada or New Zealand. I think if it was a maple leaf it would be more obvious so lets try on Oz or NZ..

The guy assisting with what looks like a Slingsby T-21 (not to be found in many countries) has an Aussie style hat on but that could be anywhere these days. Aussie T-21's used for cadet training had the words "Air Cadet" plastered all over them but this could be a civvie glider. The dH (.....ah! de Havilland) also makes a Commonwealth location probable.

The aerial shot looks very flat and very wet - those look like paddy fields or similar to me and the large house right centre has a "tropic" look to it - including what may be a red metal zinc roof... - very SE Asia... but a lack of scrubby little villages, motorbikes, animals and atap huts

Quite dry in the airfield pictures... starting to think about Queensland - aerial shot taken in or around "The Wet" and the others in local winter.........

but most Aussie strips of any size have Runway numbers..........................

Re the Sedburgh (T21b) picture.
The colour scheme is 1970 ish UK 'Air Cadets' without having those words painted under the cockpit and they're certainly UK style roundels, but you wouldn't wear those hats whilst flying in that open cockpit; well not for long anyway!
But it's not UK. Air Cadet Sedburghs used in the UK were retrofitted with a horrible canopy (well all ours at Halton were anyway) and there's no sign of that on this example, plus the right spoiler isn't 'fully closed and flush'.....
As for runway numbers, they are visible in that photo.

By the way, with my pedant's hat on, it's Sedbergh not Sedburgh.

Certainly looks like it - with a carefully cropped pic to remove Runway 27 on the right............. should have known - I42 is a well-traveled man - especially in SE Asia..........

India Four Two 24th Jun 2018 15:54

Nok Airfield, southeast of Chang Mai, Thailand. I flew a Rotax-powered Diamond DA20. The Tiger was there, but the T21b wasn't to be seen.

Harry,
I didn't crop the picture, but you are right, the threshold of Runway 27 is just out of shot:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmf...1be053804b.png

The amazing thing is that Runway 09/27 is a different airfield! Apparently, the partners in Lanna Airfield had a falling out, so some of them went away and built Nok. Here's a sentence from the Obstacles section of Lanna's website:

3. IMPORTANT!!! Trees, planted by Nok Airfield in the east of the runway. "Nok Airfield" has been licensed in 2005 by the DCA only 270 m east of our runway!
Airfield (VTCM) - Lanna Flying Club, Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Nok website makes no mention of the adjacent runway:

NOK Aviation home page

When I was flying there, I didn't even notice the Lanna runway - so much for my SA!

SMOKEON has control.

nvubu has it! I thought this one would go within 24 hours. Photo taken from a Loganair Islander en route from North Ron to Kirkwall.

Thank you - Smokeon led me to it.
This is a bit warmer than the Orkneys

This is very annoying - the attach image button won't let me paste the image url. Had to go to advanced and press the "Source" button and then past the url between img tags.
