UN inspection team... Blackhawk (I think that's what it is)... Newly expanded airport... Flat terrain. Erbil?

mgahan 10th Jun 2017 03:23

Tell Jen she has a smart dad. Erbil it is as it was in 2006.

Yes, we were looking at the existing airport which seemed to be able to cater for the current and expected needs for at least a decade when we were taken to the "new" one with a 105 metre wide 5000 metre long runway, terminal with 6 A380 capable gates and new control tower - the existing one was the most modern we saw in Iraq except for Mosul - another story of wasted aid funds.

Told it was Swedish aid money. Guess they had a decent surplus that year.

Fun six weeks and 41 Blackhawk hours, not to mention the IOM Advanced security course in Jordan before we could travel into Iraq. Sitting here in Tarawa is very tame in comparison.

Jensdad has the con.

Is that Tarawa your house or Tarawa in Kiribati?

The latter is a very interesting spot ......................

jensdad 10th Jun 2017 12:38

Hi Mister Gahan. thanks for that, I'll let her know :) Didn't realise the runway was 5000m long there. That's slightly lengthy, but I guess it does get a bit warm there from time to time...

I still don't seem to be able to upload a photo (I'm sure there was a post somewhere on PPRuNe about how to do that. Anyone know where it is?)

Open House.

Heathrow Harry 10th Jun 2017 15:36

You can try jsu pulling it in by drag 'n drop but the most relaible way is as follows

Go to USER CP in the yellow bar at the top

Goto PICTURED ALBUMS in the side bar

ADD Album

Upload Pictures - and then find picture and add it

Once its there click on it and it gives you either an html or a bb address - copy (I use the bb version) and then back to this forum

Open new post hit the little yellow square with sun and mountain and insert the bb code

Thanks for that Harry. I've posted pics here before using drag and drop but that doesn't seem to work for me now. I've tried to create an album but that ain't happening either. Not to worry. Hopefully I'll have it fathomed out by the time I next get one right :)

Still OH

Harry,

Tarawa in the mid Pacific. Pretty much full time for the past 10 months as the Aviation Advisor.

A charming spot we found but 10 months is a long time to be there I'd have thought.....

mgahan 11th Jun 2017 08:45

I rotate off site every six or so weeks for work in the "home office" and to let the rapidly improving regulatory team here operate "solo" for two or three weeks, with me far far away on internet.

Very satisfying work after similar tasks in Kabul and Jakarta.

Jakarta I know well - managed to avoid Kabul ...................... so far..........

Actually it would be hard to think of two places more different than JKT and Bonriki............

Northern France?

nvubu 14th Jun 2017 16:36

More eastern than northern France - another view

Looks like the area around Mailly-le-Camp and Aeroport Paris Vatry

I've heard of strip fields but this is ridiculous!!!

nvubu 14th Jun 2017 21:51

Neither of those - go east & south.

The field pattern is completely different now

Heathrow Harry 15th Jun 2017 07:40

pity - it's soooo distinctive

nvubu 15th Jun 2017 11:49

In the first image the road system on the east and the and the watercourse in the top of the image are still, for the most part, the same.

These were based here:

And here some detail of a hanger

It is still an active airfield - most of the strip fields are now part of the airfield.
