Looks a bit narrow for a taxiway; are you sure it's not just an access road as the hangars seem to be cut off from it.

chevvron,

I think the photo was taken from this location:

By the way, does anyone have any idea what the derelict aircraft is?

In view of the thread drift, a reminder that it is OPEN HOUSE.

oldpax 4th Jun 2014 05:35

Just a suggestion but the derelict aircraft's wing planform resembles a Liberator.

oldpax 4th Jun 2014 23:42

Americans were here!

I don't remember the Liberator, this about 1961 and we lived in tents!

India Four Two 5th Jun 2014 02:05

chevvron,

I've just looked at the oldest available image on GE (4 May 2002), where the derelict still has a tail.

From the shadows, it is a tail-dragger and the dimensions (~80' x ~40') plus the constant-chord high aspect-ratio wing, make me think it is a Twin Pioneer.

chevvron 5th Jun 2014 04:36

Fair enough. I thought it was bigger but obviously not!

oldpax 5th Jun 2014 08:30

its not RAF now!

Near a desert !

India Four Two 5th Jun 2014 16:10

So would that be the Libyan Desert? Idris?

oldpax 5th Jun 2014 23:14

oldpax,

Thanks. I happened to be reading the "Queen of Tarhuna" Canberra thread and made what turned out to be an inspired guess!

India Four Two 6th Jun 2014 05:13

Jebel Tarik?
Not to be confused with the other Pillar of Hercules ;)

oldpax 6th Jun 2014 08:35

whirlwind

The airfield is still used but not by the RAF!

chevvron 7th Jun 2014 16:07

Definitely looks like RAF North Front to me; pic taken from an upper floor in the Officers Mess looking towards the airfield; those masts in the background belong to the Navy; Rock just out of pic (cropped?) at the right.
