High River Air Station,Alberta,Canada. c.1920

Lordflasheart 27th Jun 2012 13:15

Correct Sabredog SiR.

High River Air Station, Alberta, 1920s. Elev 3390 ft. Probably DH-4s, with four ex-RFC Bessoneau hangars.

During WWII No 5 EFTS relocated from Lethbridge to High River (due to the frequent high winds at Lethbridge.) Three runways, two hangars and a major camp were built – with 106 Classes graduated for the BCATP, initially on Tiger Moths, then Cornells.

This tells the story http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/bcatphighriver.html

And now it's all gone apart from one hangar and the RCAF flag. You can just make out the runways in the 2002 GE overhead. LFH

Sabredog has control.

somewhere in Iraq, possibly??

olympus 27th Jun 2012 17:25

I think this picture shows damage at Clark AFB in the Philippines caused by fall-out from the eruption of Mt Pinatubo (sp?) and which ultimately led to the closure of the base. (Google Images not used!)

sabredog 27th Jun 2012 19:38

Clark A.F.B. is correct, Olympus.

`Playing to the Goofers again,Hoskins; This could all end in tears..!!`
Bader at Woodley,perhaps..?

ed.forget that ; Think it`s a Snipe,,same on the ground,and probably UK ,not Iraq....Like the Cromwell `bone-dome`...

olympus 28th Jun 2012 11:14

Sycamore, a good try but rethink the location. Actually, it didn't all end in tears as the Fg Off pilot of the Snipe (for that is what it is) ended up as MRAF.

Noyade 28th Jun 2012 11:27

Absolutely no idea, but a wonderful photo. :ok:

Any chance this was part of a movie or documentary, just seems a very 'visual' shot?

sabredog 28th Jun 2012 12:57

No1 Squadron Hangars,R.A.F. Hinaidi,IRAQ. F/O. Dermot Boyle at the controls.

olympus 28th Jun 2012 14:54

Correct SD, you have control.

Noyade - no idea if this is a frame from a movie; the caption reads '...taken by a camera fastened to the fin of Fg Off Boyle's Snipe'.

sabredog 28th Jun 2012 18:01

Thank you,Olympus. Always knew that Michael Shaw's history of No1. Squadron would be useful one day.

Central or Southern Americas?

sabredog 29th Jun 2012 19:54

Good ranging shot,SHO. I take my hat off to you!
The airfield is situated in the southern part of Central America, and the country has strong culturally and historical links to South America.

Lordflasheart 30th Jun 2012 22:57

Its very quiet. Is it Wimbledon ? LFH
