SD - you are too good at this - Huntsville it is
It opened as Huntsville flying field in the early 30s with a sod runway which closed in 1941- reopened in 1942 with a paved runway- Eastern Airways services began there in 1946

Looks a bit like Manby?

nvubu 6th Jul 2012 20:30

Not Honnington, Manby or Shawbury.

edit: CGB - you were closer with Shawbury:ok:

G-ARZG 6th Jul 2012 20:39

Sleap ? (yawn, just to get to 10 characters)

Kieron Kirk 6th Jul 2012 20:42

Sealand.

Ciarain.

jindabyne 6th Jul 2012 21:17

Scampton? -- I think

Hen Ddraig 6th Jul 2012 23:21

I think it may be Ternhill

nvubu 6th Jul 2012 23:22

None of Sleap, Sealand or Scampton.

Closest so far is Honnington - by about 10,500 Smoots according to GE:ok:

Will check back in in the morning.

edit: Neither is it Ternhill

chevvron 7th Jul 2012 04:23

How about Hemswell?

nvubu 7th Jul 2012 04:54

Not Hemswell either

Tempsford 7th Jul 2012 07:36

RAF Catterick

nvubu 7th Jul 2012 07:53

Sorry Tempsford, it isn't Catterick either.

All suggestions to date are all far too north.

I'm just off out for a couple of hours ... I'll post an overhead on my return.

nvubu 7th Jul 2012 08:01

Actually double checking my source - I might be talking a load of cobblers as I now think that it might be a generic photo shot relating to the subject in hand.

So here are the overheads which should be a dead giveaway

1945:

1948:

If I am talking cobblers, I have no idea of where the original photo was of - apologies.
