nvubu 22nd Jun 2012 20:01

Correct as it is Midway - Over to you SD.

edit: I saw Wake Island there before the edit :ok:

sabredog 22nd Jun 2012 20:11

Apologies,nvubu.
I really cannot take that one, as I went for Wake Island and not Midway.

YHC.

nvubu 22nd Jun 2012 20:47

That's a lovely cloud in the background, no idea where it is so a random guess Port Philip Bay, Melbourne?

nvubu 22nd Jun 2012 22:22

Sorry SH, wrong continent.

The image is lacking in features other than that cloud - so here is a photo of the overnight hotel - which is still there, although somewhat changed.

nvubu 23rd Jun 2012 05:33

It's one of the locations on the map :ok:

sabredog 23rd Jun 2012 07:29

Lake Victoria (Port Bell) Kenya. Source; "Merchant Airman" by H.M. Stationery Office,1946 at 2/- net.

nvubu 23rd Jun 2012 07:51

Hmmmm... not sure I should give that to you SD as your source has the country wrong. It's shown in the correct country on the map :D

I'm just popping out for a couple of hours, so once you've corrected the country, feel free to take control.

Hint: It's the Pearl of Africa you want.:ok:

Airclues 23rd Jun 2012 08:25

I'm sure that sabredog actually meant Uganda.

Dave

PS. Is that building now part of the Lake Victoria Hotel? Stayed there in 1969 with BOAC and it looks familiar.

sabredog 23rd Jun 2012 09:35

The source (and Airclues) has the correct country,Uganda. It was I who had the mental block!

Airclues 23rd Jun 2012 10:23

I'm sure everyone will agree that the name is more important than the country. Therefore I believe that sabredog has control.

Dave

nvubu 23rd Jun 2012 10:59

He does have control - I was being pedantic as he is usually so accurate.

Although in this region there might have been an issue as names change, and so do country borders - e.g. Port Florence (Kisumu) was the terminus of the Uganda railway, this was in Uganda at the time. It was decided that as the rest of the railway was in Kenya that the border should be changed changed to incorporate it. It was changed and the railway, still called the Uganda Railway, no longer went to Uganda. Couple of very interesting books on this region: The Lunatic Express: An Entertainment in Imperialism and The White Nile by Alan Moorehead.

Airclues: the hotel is the Silver Springs hotel, which is on the road from Port Bell to Kampala. It has changed completely since this photo, even in the last 10 years it has been rebuilt since I knew it in the 90's/00's.

Lake Victoria Hotel in Entebbe is largely unchanged, although they have moved the entrance from where you would have known it to round the back - and rather scruffy and downbeat, and the entrance and drive is now a terrace and pathways through the gardens.

SD - over to you

sabredog 23rd Jun 2012 11:14

Thank you, nvubu and Airclues. I misread the caption to the photograph which was exactly the same as the challenge, complete with the CB .
The next, more modern challenge;
