Overheads are Silverstone, but the original photo isn't 'cos as far as I'm aware, Silverstone never had 'C' type hangars, so how about Waddington?
|
Silverstone it is.
The other photo appeared in this article about Silverstone, and I rather assumed it was Silverstone. However, all the suggestions kept going north rather than south, so I guess it isn't. I've found an original source of this image here - still doesn't say where it is, although the caption below might help? 18th September 1943: 'T For Tilly', a Lancaster bomber repaired by the RAF Repair and Maintenance Service flies once again after being shot-up on a bombing mission. Anyone got an answer to the challenge at #2268? I think we've established it's not Silverstone as the overheads show 5 Bellman/T2 hangars with max 2 together, whereas the photo shows 3 'C' types grouped together plus a Bellman/T2, or possibly a T1, plus a distinctive non standard 'watch office/control tower, the 'C' types being mostly built pre-war. As far as I can make out on my 10'' screen there appear to be several Hurris parked near the hangars.
|
I think the design of the tower is 5740/36 which was only allocated to 5 FTS airfields, RAF Shawbury being one of them. I'm also still intrigued by this one.
|
The original picture of 2268 is in the Hulton archieve of Getty images, it shows the entire frontage of the hangars plus some more buildings and a tall tower backed by rising woodland on the left end. Difficult to make out detail on my small screen.

If it is a 5740/36 tower the the options are Ternhill, Shawbury, Little Rissington, Hullavington & South Cerney.
All except Ternhill have the tower built in front of the hangar. Ternhill is the only one with the tower between two hangars and the difference in angle between the two hangars also seems to fit. |
Flap40, I think you may be right. Certainly the hangar layout fits and I'm pretty sure the Tower is a 5740/36.

So that puts Hen Ddraig in the chair.

Thanks for solving that puzzle.
I've looked at it on Google Maps and it looks spot on for Ternhill when zoomed in positioned behind the windsock at the end of Warrant Road. |
Away from home at the moment so its OH again
